    1. [PD-LIFE] Directions to our house
    2. Lynn Vondran
    3. Hi Rick!!!! I figured, since I wrote up directions to our house, I might as well send them to you and your parents right away. This way you have them for when you come for a visit in November! Coming from Lancaster: Take Rt. 30 WEST, heading toward YORK You will see a sign for two exits to COLUMBIA. Take the SECOND EXIT (it exits off Rt. 30 to the right) Make a LEFT OFF THE EXIT (onto Rt. 441, aka 3rd St.) Go to THRU 3 traffic lights (when green :o) ) Keep going straight. At the second stop sign, after those lights, make a RIGHT onto UNION ST. The next block will be S. SECOND ST. Make a RIGHT onto S. SECOND ST. Where you are making that RIGHT, is St. Pete's Catholic Church. We are the second house past St. Pete's on your RIGHT. You'll see our big YELLOW porch. If you go too far, you will see a big white church. That is the Buddist Temple. Back up two buildings, and our house is there. So, we are RIGHT in the middle of the block, so to speak, between the Catholic church, and the Buddist Temple. See you SOON!!!!! BTW, before the first stop sign, to your left, will be our historical market house, with it's dungeon below. The one I wrote of on the PA Dutch Life list. The first stop sign, after that, will be CHERRY ST. You'll see a dear friend's house, with yellow siding, on the katty-korner from you. Don't turn onto that street, keep going straight. The second stop sign will be UNION ST.] :o) Lynn PS There is what seems to be a big fire 2 1/2 blocks from our house right now. They say it's at 213 Walnut Street...so many fire companies responding, hope no one is hurt.

    2. It's great that you had such a good time--it's always?fun to see old classmates.? Our 20th is coming up in November and I can't wait!? We have been having reunions every five years, though--there were 135 of us.? We've lost two classmates--one to a car accident, one to illness.? One of the strangest experiences I have ever had was visiting my high school about five years after we graduated--you really expect the bell to ring and to see all of your old friends pouring out of the rooms into the hallways. A group of us have been emailing back and forth ever since the notice went out, and we all agree we don't feel any older! --Debra -----Original Message----- From: Richard Berkheiser <reberkheiser@earthlink.net> To: PADUTCH-LIFE@rootsweb.com Sent: Mon, 30 Jul 2007 9:57 am Subject: [PD-LIFE] My Class Reunion Hi everyone! Well, I survived my first high school class reunion Saturday. Many of us haven't seen each other in 20 years so it was interesting and fun. It brought back a lot of memories. We were a small private school class of 23 but 13 of us were able to show up including spouses and children. We're actually old enough to have teenagers??? And grandkids???? I tried to get a count and all I could come up with was 33 people, but I'm sure there were more. I was amazed how little we've changed. My one old friend said it best. We still act the same but only in older bodies. It didn't take long for me to get reacquainted with my best friend from high school. Before long we were back in our old groove. This time his wife and kids joined in on the fun! What was funny was when my friend and I were sitting there at the picnic table trying to fill out a fill in the blank sheet of what we know of our fellow classmates. After about the first 5 minutes, I just started going down the list and filling in names. I'm sure many of them weren't gender correct. I know I put a guy's name down for "I'm three months pregnant". My friend was even worse. He slid his over to his wife and had her fill it out and she wasn't even in our class! :-) When it was time for the class group picture, we were all cutting up and making jokes and, well, acting like kids again. :-) Reality hit the fan while we were running the video from our Senior Trip in 1985. The next generation was glued to the TV screen watching everything we did! Now I own a copy of it on DVD. I cringe everytime I see myself in it. How quickly we forget! I guess our teens today don't act as bad as I thought. In fact, I think the next generation learned a thing or two from us. Our prinicpal was driving the bus and I was surprised he let us get away with all of that stuff. He was also our home room teacher. He was a great guy! :-) The Class of 1985 broke the mold and its been downhill ever since. 1. [PD-LIFE] NORTH VS SOUTH
    2. Sheila Kline
    3. Hey y'all! Just got them sent to me from a friend in TN....wanted to pass it along to my "northern" friends. NORTH VS SOUTH The North has Bloomingdales; the South has Dollar General The North has coffee houses; the South has Waffle houses The North was dating services; the South has family reunions The North has double last names; the South has Double first names The North has Indy car races; the South has Stock car races The North has Cream of Wheat; the South has Grits The North has green salads; the South has Collard greens The North has lobsters; the South has Crawfish The North has the Rust belt; the South has the Bible Belt FOR NORTHERNS MOVING SOUTH: If you run your car into a ditch, don't panic. Four men in a four-wheel drive pick-up with a tow chain will be along shortly. Don't try to help them; just stay of of their way. This is what they live for. Don't be surprised in find movie rentals and bait in the same store. Do not buy food at this store. Remember, "y'all" is singural, "all y'all" is plural, and "all y'all's" is plural possessive. Get used to hearing "You ain't from round here, are ya?" Save all manner of bacon grease. You will be instructed later on how to use it. Don't be worried at not understanding what people are saying. They can't understand you either. The first Southern statement to creep into a transplanted Northerner's vocabulary is the adjective "Big'ol truck" or "big'ol boy". Mose Northerners begin their Southern-influenced dialect this way. All of them are in denial about it. The proper pronunciation you learned in school is no longer proper. Be advised that "he needed killin'" is a valid defense here. If you hear a Southerner exclain, "Hey, y'all, watch this." you should stay out of the way. These are likely to be the last words he'll every say. If there is the prediction of the slightest chance of even the smallest accumulation of snow, your presence is required at the local Grocery store. Itdoesn't matter whether you need anything or not. You just have to go there. Do not be surprised to find that 10 year-olds own their own shotguns. They are proficient marksman, and their mammas taught them how to aim. In the south, we have found that the best way to grow a lush lawn is to pour gravel on it and call it a driveway. AND REMEMBER: If you do settle in the South and bear children, don't think we will accept them as southerners.....after all, if the cat had kittens in the oven, we wouldnt call 'em biscuits. Send this to four people that ain't related to you, and I reckon your life will turn into a country music song 'fore you know it. Your kin would get a kick out of it, too! Signed, Born in NC, raised in SC and GA and WV....lived in PA....moved back to the hills of WV....now I am claiming that as my southern rights, all y'all.......PAW, GET OUT THE JUG, I THINK I SEE A 'NABOR CUMMIN' TO SIT A SPELL. 'We'll sit and pass the jug And share lots of hugs And talk 'bout everybody's ugly ole' mugs And then when we're done Afore the next settin' sun We'll have stories to tell That might even sell To those 'northern folk' Who like to joke Who think we can sing And rhyme a tune When really it is just a song Made up by a funny ole' goon! 1. [PD-LIFE] Sight 'n' Sound Storms
    2. Lynn Vondran
    3. Yes, I just wrote this to John & Joyce, but since you said something, I figured I would post it!!! Those were impressive, weren't they!! We have had 3 HOUR sight and sound shows here in Columbia, too. I got to watch it coming from your way, Connie, because they usually hit you before they come to us, or bypass us. Anyway, last night's storm was RIGHT over us_the weather radar showed ALL red over Columbia. I took Lexus for her last walk at about 7:30, and could feel the static in the air. I get like that when there is going to be a good CRASHER of a storm; anyone know why? It's really weird, because I can feel the hairs on my arms stand up. Mike said I definitely shouldn't be out in a storm like that; guess not, huh, I might be a target for a lightning strick! The night before (Saturday night) it was the same. Last night's was from 8:30 to 11:30, while Saturday night's was from Midnight until 3AM. So many of my neighbors, and my whole family, didn't know we had a storm, that night, until 2:30AM when the one BIG crash of thunder rumbled through. It shook the whole house, I believe. I don't sleep well, so I usually time these things, and though I know they are distructive, I love to watch the lightning and hear the thunder_have ever since I was very little. I even make sure all the lights are off, and turn down the TV, or turn it off completely, so I get the full effect of a storm. I've always thought they were exciting, but I DIDN'T like fireworks, not close up and personal_far away, okay, but not close :o) I was always afraid they would rain down hot on me, or head the wrong way and land on me before they exploded. Glad you're okay_so are we :o) I saw what my husband thinks are called Ball Lightning?, again. I put that question mark there :o) Anyway, I have to look it up at GOOGLE sometime. That makes three times I've seen it in the same area, through the trees of our neighbor's house across the street. It's bright/deep orange and red, and just shows for a second or so. I'll be meeting John & Joyce in ONE WEEK!!!! and still we haven't gotten together, Connie :o) LOL!!!! Someday, someday. :o) Lynn Connie wrote: > Lynn, a huge storm went through during the night, big time and the one > today missed us completely, so far.? 1. [PD-LIFE] FIREBALLS OF LIGHTNING
    2. Sheila Kline
    3. Just getting to my messages today, and I want to reply to your message Lynn, about the thunder and lightning show, and the ball of orange that you saw...and the hairs standing up on your arms. When I was a young girl, we were visiting my Grandma Bowyer here in WV (our family was living in Columbia, SC at the time while my Dad was stationed at Ft. Jackson), and my sister and I were sleeping in the back bedroom with our aunt....well, this terrific storm came, and we saw 3 HUGH fireballs bounce along the posts on the back porch located outside the bedroom we were in!. They were literally balls of fire, and they just hit one post after another in a flash!! We sat up, looked at each other in amazement! I will never forget that!! My mom came over yesterday to have Sunday dinner with us, and she told me about the time that a fierce storm came at the farm of my Dad's "old home place', the same place where the fireballs hit.....and the house was picked up and completely turned around....nobody in side was hurt, and nothing was damaged! Pretty amazing story! My mom said that from that day on, the house was completely looking in another direction. That seems just unbelievable! If anybody wants to see some sites of the property where the house stood, there is a winery there today that shows the rolling farm land that my grandparents...the Bowyer's owned. You can go to www.wolfcreekwinery.com. My uncle says that the tree in the one shot is the same one that all of the kids played on when they were growing up. The climate and soil must produce some awesome grapes since they have won several awards already. Now why didn't we know that? We could have all been wine producers today!(And there is a legend that there is gold hidden somewhere on the property. The kids all heard about it when they were growing up there.) Lynn, I sometimes have the hair stand up on my arms too....I wonder if it has anything to do with certain people being more perceptive than others...kind of like what they call ESP....I seem to have it happen when nobody else does. I know that I am a very sensitive person. Hope there aren't any storms in anyone's area today!! May the sun shine down on all of us!! Sheila in WV p.s. Richard, you are in Florida....do you have any storm stories to share with us? --------------------------------- Choose the right car based on your needs. Check out Yahoo! Autos new Car Finder tool.

Sheila! Oh my, I hope it was cooked first!!!!! Well, in reading your post, if it was in foil, I guess it was :o) WOW! We are blessed here in PA. Keilbasa is almost a bi-monthly, or at least monthly, food item here!!! Very Polish, very polish. It was at the Polish club, St. Cashmire's, were you ever there Sheila or Karen? Well, I was at a Polka fest there, and that is where I had my first taste of the stuff when I was in my early 20s, and I LOVE it, but it really isn't that good for you, unless you eat it in GREAT moderation. Ours is just waiting to be made into a soup or baked, and eaten. I have to wait a while before making it, because I just made, in the small roasting pan, that recipe of a little bit of water, a head of cabbage cut up, layered with frozen hamburger patties, and Brown n' Serve Sausages, with the Contadina Crushed Tomatoes with Italian Herbs poured over it, and baked at 350 degrees for 2 1/2 hours. That will last me all next week!!! and then some. I'll bet Kielbasa would taste really good in with the cabbage in place of the burgers and sausages. Ooooooo, nasty storm is brewing somewhere!!!! Are you getting it first, Connie? Our power just surged, so I better get off the computer again. Just got on, from this morning! UGH!!!!!!! Thanks for reminding me that the greens in the corn field were most likely dandelion greens...I believe they were, but the creesy (sp) greens are not watercress. We had that in the stream in the spring - really delicious, but a little bitter. I believe watercress is a delicacy - a little pricey. I'll have to "google" or "yahoo" greens and see what I can find. 3. Lynn -- Might you be thinking of the oldie (not too much after WWI) "Yes, She knows her Onions"? My dad used to play it on the piano when I was growing up and I still have most of his music. Also there was a very popular song entitled "Yes, We Have No Bananas" that came out while I was in grade school (a couple of years after WWII, if I remember correctly!) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lynn Vondran" <lynnvondran@att.net> To: <padutch-life@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 28, 2007 6:50 PM Subject: Re: [PD-LIFE] Gumbo Song > Thanks for the Gumbo song, Karen. 3. Thanks for the Gumbo song, Karen. Isn't it a riot what they use for the subjects of some songs!!!! Anyone remember the song: Onions, Onions, La la la? Have no idea who wrote it or sang it, and believe it came out in the early to mid-sixties. Or was that the Onion song of long, long ago, I am thinking of? I know there were two of them. The one came out at the same time "Red Rubber Ball" did. I love the new shows they have on: Singing Bee and Don't Forget the Lyrics! Mike thinks I should go on that show_oh me, oh my-oh, no :o) I'd draw a blank for sure, just like with the Jambalya song this morning. "I Will Play for Gumbo" is a new one to me, but if I heard the tune, I bet I'd know the song. Lynn Karen from Berks Cawntey submitted the words for "I Will Play for Gumbo"

Lynn Mary from her Aerie submitted the song "Jambalya" by Hank Williams, Sr.!!!
