Now, it's time for me to chime about the animals in our backyard. We have many varieties of flowers planted in our gardens. We have been cutting many bouquets of gladiolus in the past few weeks. Our 5 butterfly bushes as well as other flowers have been attracting loads and loads of butterflies. Goldfinches are always busy at our sunflowers, eating the seeds. We've seen a sphynx moth (looks like a tiny hummingbird). Sitting by our pond, watching goldfish and Koi, we often see beautiful dragon flies. We are often amused at our frogs who sit out on rocks and seem to talk back to us. Four bird baths and numerous feeders attract different kinds of birds. We've been enjoying Jenny singing to us much of the summer. Waiting for the temperature to drop a little to go out to enjoy our back yard again. Well, they are off !!!!! I hold my breath for every launch, and it's such a relief when it's a successful one. Hope you all got to see it!!!! Lynn PS Now to watch a rerun of the Biggest Loser!!! I've been watching them ALmost every night. Can't wait for the new one to start.
Nope, I made that up the term "slops" in my teens when I would experiment, when still living at home with Mom. I made some really GREAT things. Some you had to eat quickly, or rather before it hardened :o) LOL! Long story, which I believe I already told, and it's in the archives ;o) I had Lynn's Slop #1, Lynn's Slop # 2, and so on. Wish I still had those recipes. When I lived in the one apartment complex, the cock roaches just nested in my Betty Crocker Recipe box, where I kept all my own recipes. That thing went directly to the dumpster, when I found this out, and most of mine and Lindsey's things went to the other folks in the building when we moved out_appliances, books, goose down coats, you name it, we donated it to them, because I didn't want to carry any eggs with me to the new apartment. I loved the apartment, but hated those horrible bugs. They would travel up from the apartment below, where the Threshold people lived. They were such sweet people, but had to be told to use water and soap when they took a shower, or did their wash, and cleaned. There was something missing in their person who was to be there to give them guidance, so I often would talk to them, explaining things, if we were in the laundry room, or sitting out on the stoop. Lindsey was just 1 1/2 years old, but made many a friend of these folks, and so did I. I often wondered how they were doing after we left there. :o) Lynn PS I couldn't call them stews, because many of them were TOO thick to be called that_Hmmm, maybe Goulashes :o) Richard Emlin Reed wrote: Well then, it was either Mulligan Stew or Goulash. Well, we are in for another launching of a space shuttle. Hope you get to see it at 6:35 Eastern Standard Time_I guess that's how you say it :o) How about letting everyone know what time it is in your area when it launches. :o) Lynn

May I contribute to the Animals in our Backyards series? All this talk of backyards finally made me aware that I have a backyard, too. It's not very big as backyards go; but there is a fairly large pond about thirty feet from my patio. This pond attracts a lot of birds; I don't mean blackbirds and crows, although there are some of those. I mean great blue herons and gray herons and ibises and anhangas, and others I can't identify. We can also see two to four big, and not so big, sandhill cranes strutting up and down our street at times, so tame that you can walk up to them. Of course, that's our frontyard, so they don't count. My son-in-law, two doors up, is really into birdwatching. He has a camera with a tripod, binoculars, and a bird book. I'm what you might call a casual watcher. The pond contains lots of fish, which attract the birds. They wade in the pond, grabbing and eating the fish. After they have fed, they come out on the bank and spread their wings to dry; before they can fly away. There is something else in the pond, an alligator, about four feet long. We see him/her lying on the bank, sunning him/herself. I don't see how he/she and all those birds live on the fish in that pond. They must be very prolific fish. My wife is afraid that the alligator will eat our cat; so she won't let me let the cat out on the patio unless I am out there with her. I can see the headlines: Ninety-one Year Old Man Saves Cat From Alligator. Richard Emlin Reed Wesley Chapel, FL

I wish they would come get our spiders out front. Seems I no sooner get those buggers' webs down, they build them bigger and better! I was going to go out and get some down before the workers get here tomorrow, but I'm not going to do that until they come to do the porch. WOW! you just missed the workers, John and Joyce. RATS, I forgot, when they are on the road, they have to unsub :o( Lynn ----- Original Message ----- From: dorner1065@aol.com To: padutch-life@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, August 08, 2007 1:41 PM Subject: Re: [PD-LIFE] Animals in our backyards Here's a thought--it might have been eating bugs off the windows.? This reminds me. For most of this summer we had a yellow Finch that would fly around our house for hours and peck at all the windows. It would flutter up to the big picture window in the Dining Room like it was trying to fly in. After it did that it would back off and sit on the thermometer for awhile trying to figure out why out why it couldn't fly straight through. This bird was really obsessed with this for a month. After we had a bad rainstorm a few weeks ago, we didn't see it anymore. It was pretty comical to watch the bird in action. Speaking of museums, I LOVED going on our field trips to the Reading Museum. This was in the days before they built the Planitarium next to it. I really miss the walks Lindsey and I took around the grounds there almost every weekend. And, my mom took her there many times, too, and met some extremely nice people who fed a goose named Charlie. Charlie loved Lindsey, and there is a picture of Lindsey, Charlie, and Ed Oxenrider walking away from my mom, with Charlie right in the middle of them. It was such a cute picture, but I believe Mom sent Ed the print, and now I have to wade through thousands of picture negatives to try to find it to have prints made. The sad thing about this is that some rotten people raced through the museum one day and ran over our Charlie. Lindsey was crushed!!!!!!! as was everyone else who experienced this goose's friendship. We had a picture of Charlie wearing Ed's baseball cap, too, wonder where that negative is? One of these days, when I have nothing to do (cough, cough) I'll have to look for those pictures. Thanks, Karen, for the announcement of the museums free passes for Sept. 29th. Wish I could take advantage of them. Sounds like a really interesting time could be had in visiting the many museums involved. Lynn Karen wrote of the free admission passes for museums.
Hi Richard Emlin Reed :o) Whyda say that? I think you are well educated, and cheerful. Did I miss something :o)???? Lynn PS Have you heard ANYthing from Jack lately? Since I'll bet a lot of you are museum buffs, I thought I'd pass this information on through this list. I hope this is considered "list-appropriate", if not please forgive me. Saturday Sept 29, 2007 will be the annual Smithsonian Museum Day. Museum Day is a nationwide event where participating museums and cultural institutions across the country offer free admission to Smithsonian readers and Smithsonian.com visitors, allowing for one day only, the free-admission policy of Smithsonian's Washington, D.C.-based facilities to be emulated across the country. Just go to the website at http://www.smithsonianmag.com/museumday/ to find out more (you don't have to be a subscriber to Smithsonian Magazine to participate inthis program). You can click on "Find A Museum" to locate a participating museum in your area and Click on "Admission Card" to print out a FREE GENERAL ADMISSION CARD to the participating Museum of your choice for Sept 29. That card is good for you and one guest. One free admission card per household. In the state of Pennsylvania alone, there are 30 institutions to choose from and I'm sure more will be added. I hope some of you will be able to take advantage of this yearly event. Regards, Karen from Berks Cawhnty

Oh my!!!!! What a funny video that would have been!!!! Hi Gang!!! Well, the slate roof, snowguards, third floor gutter in the front, and back rear gutters are going to be fixed tomorrow. They are STILL waiting on the special porch pillars to come in. First they had to wait on the borough to pass them, NOW it's waiting on the special order they had to place, because of them being so tall. They also assured me that the skunk I've been smelling all morning long, isn't under OUR front porch, but up the way a little. It is really strong around the Buddist Temple on the corner. But, I thought it got stronger as you approached our house. Guess I just got it in my nose from walking Lexus up to the corner and back. So, I CAN sit out on the front porch when it cools down today :o) LOL!!!!!!! I heard a noise, and thought the skunk was trying to scratch its way into the house, but it was the guys looking over the work they need to do. Thank God! That's all I need is a skunk to get rid of before they start their work. :o) Lynn
Thought the List might get a kick out of this one. For all us old folks......... And those of us who are getting there..... The New Alphabet A is for Apple, and B is for Boat, That used to be right, But now it won't float! Age before Beauty is what we once said, But let's be a bit more realistic instead. Now A's for arthritis; B's the bad back, C is the chest pains, perhaps car-d-iac? D is for dental decay and decline, E is for eyesight, can't read that top line! F is for fissures and fluid retention, G is for gas which I'd rather not mention. H is high blood pressure--I'd rather it low; I for incisions with scars you can show. J is for joints, out of socket, won't mend, K is for knees that crack when they bend. L for libido, what happened to sex? M is for memory, I forget ! What comes next N is neuralgia, in nerves way down low; O is for osteo, the bones that don't grow! P for prescription's, I have quite a few, just Give me a pill and I'll be good as new! Q is for queasy, is it fatal or flu? R for reflux, one meal turns to two. S for sleepless nights, counting my fears, T for Tinnitus; there's bells in my ears! U is for urinary; big troubles with flow; V is for vertigo, that's "dizzy," you know. W is for worry, NOW what's going 'round? X is for X ray, and what might be found. Y is another year I'm left here behind, Z is for zest that I still have-- in my mind. I've survived all the symptoms, my body's deployed, And I am keeping twenty-six 'doctors' fully employed!!! ____________________________________________________________________________________ Building a website is a piece of cake.
