    2. People in the northern part of our county have sworn on their lives that they've seen mountain lions (or cougars, as we're more likely to call them.)? Coyotes are becoming a fairly common sight.? We've always had bear and deer, of course--it's not unusual to have deer in my yard, but fortunately the bear haven't come closer than a few blocks.? The closest I've personally come to one is having one walk across the road in front of my car one night.? Fortunately my headlights hit him in enough time to allow me to slow down and allow him to go along his way unscathed. I am thrilled that the mountain lions are making a comeback too, as long as I never have to come face-to-face with one! --Debra -----Original Message----- From: Patricia + James <jimpat@suchmail.com> To: padutch-life@rootsweb.com Sent: Tue, 7 Aug 2007 9:02 pm Subject: [PD-LIFE] Wildlife We live in NH (in a small city) and our son lives nearby in VT. He has forty acres and has spotted catamount paw prints in their yard, along with bear, deer and moose etc.. Yes, a catamount is a Mountain Lion and they are making a come-back in New England. He is thrilled. I am not! 3. I hadn't thought about my reaction to an assault by the alligator upon my patio. Usually I sit there, reading, secure in the knowledge that alligators are afraid of humans. I don't know whether the alligator's hunger for my cat would exceed his fear of me. My wife appears to think that my presence would dissuade the 'gator from attacking the cat. Does a charging alligator roar? If he does, I suppose, upon hearing his approach, I would grab the cat, who is old and fat and, therefore, not too agile, and head for the door. I assure you that I would break the ten-foot speed record for nonagenarians. My wife wouldn't have time to activate the video recorder. Anyway, we don't have one. }:-) Richard Emlin ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tracy" <better_than_good@yahoo.com> To: <padutch-life@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, August 09, 2007 2:04 PM Subject: Re: [PD-LIFE] Animals in our backyards/alligator > > --- Richard Emlin wrote: > > My wife is afraid that the alligator will eat our cat; so she won't > let me let the cat out on the patio unless I am out there with her. Having them that close, doesn't that kinda scare you? Aren't you afraid you'll be visited INSIDE the house someday. Is it true about what they say about alligators eating dogs? and you have to always watch out for that? I guess you get use to it, huh? Lynn Richard Emlin Reed wrote: Nah! I read it somewhere. 2. Lynn Vondran
    3. Boy we surely do have quite an assortment of back yards, don't we!!!! What would we do without our animals to keep us entertained, and they are also GREAT company. Around here there is a Cat Bird who just sits closeby Lexus and me when we sit on the porch. She must have a nest somewhere in the area, because she is always around. And the pretty white pigeon comes when I am outside gardening, but with the very hot weather, she takes a bath, and then goes to the balcony, and sits on the railing a lot. Anyway, what would we do without them all :o) You all have EXTREMELY interesting back yards!!!!!! Thanks for sharing them with us, and anyone else who wishes to share their natural surroundings, please do, as I am enjoying the pictures being painted by your words!!!! Lynn ----- Original Message ----- From: abenn5630@aol.com To: PADUTCH-LIFE@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, August 09, 2007 5:50 PM Subject: [PD-LIFE] Our Back Yards Well, we have two back yards, one at our home in Tempe Az. The little wrens like the hummingbird feeder as well. The Mockingbirds ignore everything but the bird bath full of water. We have a woodpecker that sits up high in the Palm Tree and pecks away. Of course we have the usual pigeons. The other back yard is up on the Rim in the mountains of Az. This is where we have a cabin. This back yard is busy all the time. The squirrels and chipmunks visit the bird feeder all day. The Stellar Blue Jays seem to know when our car pulls into the drive way and they are out there calling and waiting for my husband to fill the feeder with seed and peanuts. When it is very dry and the Monsoon season has not started we get all sorts of birds, Nut Hatches large and pigmy, Western Tanagers, Mountain Blue Birds, Fly Catchers, and the list goes on. But we are sometimes visited by Wild Turkeys, and Coyotes. We have not had any Deer lately or Elk. AS I mentioned, when we have a dry year, the Elk and Deer will come in to drink from the water dishes we have out and filled. We will be visited by Black Bear on occasion. Usually they are Yearlings, looking for a territory. The Game and Fish will not remove them unless they are threatening to do bodily harm to someone. Our little Karin Terrier took off after a bear and chased it barking all the way. No one was going to invade her yard. So you can see our yards are pretty busy all year long. 3. I find it on the Style Channel? Is that what 63 is for Lancaster Comcast? It's cable. Mike doesn't like the show, so I haven't been watching it early. I usually catch it at about 7, 8 or 9 at night...but as I said, they are reruns. When they show the new ones, Mike IS going to watch them :o) I've been good watching Hogan's Heroes night after night with him, over and over again, so I'm sure he will watch The Biggest Loser with me. If anyone knows when the new one starts, please let us all know. I think there are quite a few others who watch it also. :o) Lynn Tracy wrote: Are you watching tapes or are the reruns being shown on tv (satelite or cable)? I thought I had seen them listed once and then I couldn't find them on that day. I thought I had heard they were showing new shows on a cable channel. I really hope they start the new season on NBC again!!
