This talk about Auchenbachs - In the Tulpehocken area my 2x gr-grandmother was Elizabeth M. Auchenbach, (b. abt 1833) who married Nathan Gruber, (b. abt 1830). They had a daughter Mary E. Gruber (b. Oct 1859) from whom I am descended. Elizabeth was the daughter of Jno. & Mary (unk) Auchenbach. Richard, let me know if my Elizabeth intersects with your Auchenbach tree. I remember reading about Michael Auchenbach when he was killed. I felt so sad for those daughters. For quite a while there would be an 'In Memorium' notice in the newspaper every year on his birthday and the anniversary of the day he was killed. I'm not sure if that is continued into the present. Hope your sister can find comfort, and healing in her struggle with cancer, also, Barb. So many cases these days, makes one wonder what is going on. I still say it's the chemicals and other poisons we are using in our everyday products that are making these cases spring up in our daily lives all the time, anymore. Praying for you all. :o) Lynn
Sarah's Kitchen told me about mixing these two together, when I purchased my Hot Pepper Relish at Root's on week. I believe she said to use half a jar, with a block of cream cheese. I will try it and tell you if it comes out okay. Sarah's Kitchen makes the best Hot Pepper Relish I've ever tasted. I love that stuff mixed with almost everything, and even eat a spoonful of it, when I get hunger pains. It's delicious!!!!! They sell it at Root's Farmers' Market, in Manheim Township, PA, and at Forry's Market, in Silver Spring, PA. I always have a jar or two on hand. It tastes absolutely wonderful on hot dogs, too!!!! I also use it in my slops to heat them up a bit. :o) Lynn
Speaking of tame wild life, we had a woman in MA who lived very near us who would carry wild squirrels in her blouse.? One time her husband went to the barber downtown and while he was getting his hair cut, saw his jacket pocket moving.? One of them had come along for the ride.? The trouble was, they would come into our flower garden to hide their nuts.? They were the in thing before having a ferret came to fame. I can remember some guys in the housing project, walking around with raccoons drapped around their necks_and I guess they WERE very tame, never heard of anyone being bitten. Here in Columbia, there was a teenage girl who had a domestic white skunk for a pet. I wonder what ever happened to that. It was a beautiful creature, for sure. We had squirrels who would sit on your knee and eat its peanuts, but once the kids started playing in our very backyard, when Lindsey was little, we stopped doing that, because we didn't want any of the kids to hurt the squirrels, and we especially didn't want the squirrels to be that close to the kids. Jimmy kept coming around for his peanuts though, and we enjoyed him for a few years. He was the one who would knock on the door for his peanuts, if I didn't feed him bright and early in the morning, or if the other squirrels got there before he came by :o) Drove me crazy that first time he did it, because I thought it was kids playing tricks, like knocking and hiding, just to get me to answer the door. Until I looked out the BIG windows in what we now have as the TV/Sitting room, and I could see the kitchen door from that window, and saw him saunter up and jump a few times against the door, then sit back and watch for me :o) John and Joyce know which window I mean :o) J! ohn was sitting in the chair that faces that window, while they were visiting on Monday! :o) Oh, speaking of which, that very window has a double short door under it. I believe I told you all about this before. John and Joyce, that is where they use to roll in the casket for the wakes. Soooo, where we were sitting, is where they held the viewings for that household. Hope Mike showed you the door inside. It is bricked up on the outside. I wanted to say something to you, Joyce, and forgot. I think we got onto another subject and it totally slipped my mind. Well, better get moving here. Have a GREAT day everyone. I want to get that email off to Karen about Glenside_things she probably didn't know about back then :o) Lynn BTW, Connie, that is so neat!!! Sounds like what our Whiskers (the cat) did when she had her babies. She brought them out of that big double decker cat house I build out of large bales of straw on the front porch that one winter for the cats to keep warm in. When she brought each one out, she layed it on Mike's foot, to show him, then she picked it up and brought out the next one. That's when we brought the whole family inside, and found good homes for the little ones. Whiskers is still with us, along with another cat who adopted us, his name is Morris, the fat orange cat. Hi Richard, I noticed your Achenbach, and saw how you pronounced it. That is how you pronounce my one classmate's surname, also. You don't happen to be related to Michael Auchenbach, do you? My friend and I had our yearbook out, and were going over how many of our classmates were already dead, and Michael was the first to come to mind, as he was murdered by hire. His wife had him murdered right in front of his two little girls as he was putting them into his pickup truck to take them to school. This was back in the 1980s. Michael was in my homeroom through high school, at Reading High. If you are related, I have the news article here, somewhere. I thought I had it in my yearbook, still; but I must have put it into a notebook, and it's here with my research. Lynn Richard wrote: Everytime I see a name with the suffix "baugh", I am reminded of my Achenbach ancestors. Everytime I see a name with the suffix "baugh", I am reminded of my Achenbach ancestors. Achenbach was pronounced Occhhenbocchh, where the diphthong is pronounced by clearing the throat. Now it certainly couldn't have been because they wer unable to make the sound; but it seems that an unusualy large number of Achenbachs, and others with the suffix bach in their name, were anxious to chang the suffix to "baugh". I've seen sixteen spellings of Achenbach; one of which was Aughenbaugh. I.ve read of an Aughenbaugh who wrote to Germany, asking for information on her "Aughenbaugh" ancestors, only to be told that the name was unknown in Germany. So, if you're researching Arbaugh, you might try looking for Auerbachs. Ja, guten Tag, Jerilyn. When our cat came to us, she was not yet full-grown; and was suffering from malnourishment as a result of having been abandoned. So she was rather small and I named her - Lilliput. She is now about thirteen going on fourteen and weighs fourteen pounds. She is gray with black stripes and has beautiful eyes. Although her figure is less than optimum, I call her "Miss Americat". Our first pet was a mixed breed collie and setter who was much more collie than setter. Her name was Ritzi Ellen and my wife always said she was the only one she got to name. I named all three of our children. She lived almost fourteen years and died in my arms in the vet's waiting room. She could sense when it was time for me to come home from work. Around 4:30, she would leave her favorite corner in the kitchen; come in the living room; and watch the front door. Our first cat was Cuddles. She drank only running water. When she was thirsty, she would jump up on the counter and nudge the faucet until someone turned it on. She walked on a leash like a dog. She was also well travelled; she lived in Camp Hill and Reeser's Summit in PA, Oklahoma City, OK, Alexandria, VA, Myerstown, PA, and Port Charlotte, Fl. She was going on twenty when she died. Then there was Angel, who died of a heart attack when she was seven. She liked to jump up on the bureau and stare at herself in the mirror before jumping on the bed and curling up in the crook of my wife's arm. After a brief hiatus, we acquired two sisters, one gray, the other black, from a litter which my son's cat had. We couldn't decide on names; so we kept referring to them as "the gray one" and "the black one". Finally, I was inspired to name them - Graywyn and Blackwyn. They eventually became Lady Jane Graywyn and Dame Margaret Blackwyn. They liked to fetch balls; a tinfoil ball for Graywyn, and a plastic ball for Blackwyn. Each would fetch only her own ball. They were also seasoned and seasonal travellers. We had them during our motor home period. Blackwyn died at age 17; and Graywyn, at age 18. As you can see, all our pets, except poor Angel, lived long lives. We like to think it was because they were all loved and cherished. Richard Emlin ps I would rather think of my little language essays as PA-Dutch in which I am somewhat more proficient than in German. ----- Original Message ----- From: <thos@comcast.net> To: <padutch-life@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 11, 2007 6:45 AM Subject: Re: [PD-LIFE] Alligators and jokes :o) > Guten Tag Richard, > Your cat-alligator story gets better and better! > What is your felines name?We had two cats for many years whom I called > Abigail and Blake. My husband called them "Fat Cat" and " Bigfoot".Blake > was polydigital, and Abby...well Abby was described well by Tom. > The German lessons are getting better and better as well.Herr Martin,my > high school German teacher would be happy to see that I am soaking them > all up.I sure didn't show much interest in the language in 1960! > Thanks again. You are a treasure to this list. > Jerilyn > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > PADUTCH-LIFE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message
Don I spent from 1961 to 1969 (less two yrs in Alaska 62-64) while in the Military at For Huachuca..,Area is Rich in Western History, love the climate, Elevation at 4600 ft and 5200 at flag pole on Fort Huachuca..Close to Mexican Border, Nogales, Douglas, Bisbee and Naco, Arizona. Winters are mild, summers are great. WHICH I'M SURE YOU KNOW? I belonged to Fort Huachuca Riding Club (horses). We had 55 horses (35 Adult member plus children), We rode from Fort to Tombstone (abt 25 miles one way) to participate in Eldorado Days in October. We rode over Friday, parade Saturday and rode home Sunday, you acquire a tender butt after that ride. We stopped at the San Pedro River about half way point. Wives meet us there and we eat lunch, watered the horses. We had a member an old Cav days trooper as our trail boss, Rode 50 minutes, then walked 10 min. We left at 7:00am and arrive in Tombstone at 4:oop Some of better Military days were there at the Fort... Oh, Anna! I just got on to download my emails, and read your post of the loss of your sister. Our hearts and prayers go out to you. I know you will keep the wonderful memories of your sister alive, as you pick up her threads of this great tapestry of life and start weaving them with yours, until that GREAT day when we are all joined again. Once again, I am so sorry :o( But, :o) through the tears, and glad you and your sisters could be with her, in her last journey here on earth. Lynn

Now how much cream cheese and jelly do you use to make the balls? Now Barb - if Pat gives you a TRUE PA-D answer, it will be "Enough til it suits!" That's what Nana (with the raccoon) always said when I'd ask how much of an ingredient in order to make a recipe taste like she made it. She wasn't being sly and evasive either - she eyeballed pretty much everything and cooked by "feel". Karen from Berks Cawhnty RE: Pat telling about her cream cheese and pepper jelly balls
I just joined the other day, and so far I am having a lot of fun with this site. We live in Sierra Vista, just 20 miles from the wild west town of Tombstone. We came here the first time in 1969, left and came back in 1973, left again and came back in 1979 and stayed here. We love AZ, but do miss PA also. My wife is from Tennessee and goes back there often. but this is home probably for the rest of our lives. Where do you live in AZ? Don

Oh, Anna...God Bless You and Yours!! I did not know your sister, Evelyn, but my heart weeps for you during this time of sorrow. I do believe that she is now in a better place, and will not have to suffer anymore, but this is not always what we who are left want to hear...although true, it does not take away the intense pain of losing a precious one. Sometimes, it is better to say, "I don't know what to say, but I do care about you!" Grief is such a complicated process, but please do grieve and cherish the beautiful times you had together, and the memories of times gone by. Tears are cleansing for the soul, and it o.k. to laugh, to feel even joy during this time of grief. I know for I have been there. Nothing will bring back my 16 year old son, Christopher, but I do have the memories of him cherished and tucked deep within my heart forever more. Please always hold your dear sister there, and know that we all sincerely care about you! And May the Lord give you a peace that passeth all understanding...may the great comforter reside within your spirit...may you be comforted when it seems as if there is none.
