"Keep Looking Up!".... the signature closing line of Jack Horkheimer's originally named "Star Hustler" and now renamed "Star Gazer" program on PBS. Just a bit of trivia... Wonder why the show was renamed? Because of the Internet of course! When people, especially children, began accessing the Star Hustler site by using a search engine, STAR HUSTLER was not the HUSTLER they got to link to...so, after some upset folks wrote to them calling attention to the situation they realized that like it or not, the word Hustler didn't have the same connotation as it did when the show began over two decades ago. I'm old and set in my ways, so it will always be "Star Hustler" to me. The light show we saw last night was due to a passing thunderstorm, so no meteor shower for me. I remember when I was a kid, my friends and I would all spawl out at the picnic table in the backyard watching the annual meteor shower. Some years it looked like the sky was falling and the end of the world was nigh! These days I live in the suburbs and even without the thunderstorm...if we would have had a clear cloudless new moon night, I still wouldn't have seen much. Most of the neighbors have motion security lights installed and most are at a setting so that they will turn on if a firefly flits by. Talk about light pollution! Karen from Berks
I stayed up until 12:45, then woke up again at 2AM, and said "forget it:!" though I really wanted to go out, I didn't want to disturb Lexus, so I just turned the TV back on, and got tired again at about 3AM. Woke up again at 4:15AM and figured it was over with :o( Supposedly we had a clear night for viewing here in Lancaster County, but I wouldn't know :o) Anyone from here, who can say they actually saw the sights? :o) Lynn Linda wrote: I stayed up to see the sky at 1:00.....but, there is nothing to be seen....it is raining!!!!! too many clouds up there!!!
Well, I'm glad they were box turtles then. But, they had beakish looking upper lips, with a point, so I just assumed they were snappers. Oops, that's my knowledge of turtles!!! :o) LOL!!!! I still think they are cute :o) I don't see a link? Thanks Jane! Lynn Jane wrote: Those were probably box turtles. I have ridden in the car lots of times with one we rescued from the road to bring home to the garden in hopes that it will eat slugs and such. Most snapping turtles are really big - those we have gotten out of our ponds were sometimes almost 18 inches long. You wouldn't have wanted to flip one of those over because you would have risked losing a finger or toe. They are definitely nasty creatures. They bite right through the heaviest fish hook we can find to try and catch them. We have had lots of pets over the years including farm animals. The only ones we ate were chickens, though most of them were for eggs. I've got pictures of some of our pets on our website. The link is under my signature. Just scroll down to where you can click on photo gallery and then go to the kitty pictures. There are lots more than cats there. Hope you enjoy them. Lynn Vondran <lynnvondran@att.net> wrote: I'm sure they enjoy that!!! When I lived in Mohnton, we would go to an out of the way place to buy our flowers. Every year we would find a large turtle upside down in the middle of the road, stop the car, get out and upright it over at the side where it was headed. But, there were some that didn't make it without getting hit. They are so cute, I couldn't eat one. But, then again, cows are cute, and pigs are cute and I can eat that meat, only if it's from the store :o) and I don't know it's parents :o) Barb wrote: I have a shell of a small one that I use for my daycare. We get that at the Mennonite market I go to a few little towns over. It is DE-LI-CIOUS!!!!! And Elderberry anything is good for you, too. Thanks, Joan. I remember that from going to the Star Gazers' at Sam Lewis Park a few years ago. It was a gorgeous night that night. Clear skies, only that one tiny light off in the distance, lots of beautiful sights!!! Lots of telescopes pointed at the different stars and planets. I could be a Star Gazer easily, if I could be around a lot of people. To go there by my self would be too dangerous in this day and age. But, if anyone is in the York County area, and you want to see the stars, go to the big hill at Sam Lewis Park, and you'll see a beautiful sight on a clear night. :o) Lynn PS Yes, the light does polute the sky in many areas. I loved to watch the sky down on the farm before "Grammom" had the flood light put in, after "Grampop" passes away. It was as though you could touch the stars!!! Joan wrote: I'm not sure exactly where in the sky Jupiter is at the moment but the most fascinating "cluster" in the sky in my opinion is The Pleiades or "Seven Sisters." They form the shoulder of Taurus the Bull. The most interesting thing about this "cluster" is that when you look at them straight on you don't see them as clearly as you do if you look slightly off center using your peripheral vision. It is kind of an eye test to try that. <g>
Yes, I knew Alligators were in Florida :o) and in teaching preschool, I taught about the shape of their "noses", but we didn't get into WHERE they were located. From all the recent talk of Florida Alligators, I knew you had them there. I was asking if there were any Crocs in Florida. Richard Emlin Reed answered my question very cleverly :o) LOL!!!!!! But, thanks Cathy :o) Lynn Cathy wrote: Alligators are in FL. You know the ones with the flat nose, versus crocs that have the more narrow nose.
Gotcha!!! I actually understood that :o) LOL!!!! Oh my!!! That's a good one, Richard!!! Richard Emlin Reed wrote: Any crocs in FL are illegal aliengators.

There is an area in southern Arizona with a light-free zone. Our Arizona friends may know the vicinity. About 33 years ago while living in Maine, my hubby and I experienced the Perseids or "Old Faithfuls" as the Maniacs call them. Wed were out for a night time stroll and heard whistling in the sky and say a shooting star then another and another. We just sat down in the field watched and counted. In 40 minutes we counted 102! It was spectacular! We live in Metro Atlanta now and the lights of the city and surrounding communities make it impossible to see them anymore. We both have very fond memories of that night. Sherry, thank you for the kind words, and I agree with you about the stars south of Flagstaff. Last month we spent a week in Sedona, and that is beautiful country. We will be going to spend a week in Payson in November, looking forward to that. Don
Does anyone remember of or know anyone who would reach down with their bare hands into the ponds or mud to catch a snapping turtle in PA I worked in a Restaurant/Bar and some of men would bring in a snapper that they hand caught.. I was amazed they would do that and not lose a hand, they were reaching in blind.. NO WAY would I do that I don't even get that close to a snapper they are really nasty turtle's... they are good eating and when caught the men would sell them to restaurants..
