Hi Cathy, Just a hunch, but when I said 'Efftla' out loud, the first thing that came to mind is that it was Esther and whoever wrote the obit either had a very bad typo or didn't understand the accent and wrote what they thought they "heard". Kind of how we come across all those crazy misspellings in the census records. ~Karen from Berks.
Yes, my dear old (very cheap at the time, since the microwaves have come down in price) Gold Star lasted over 20 years_but, these new things, even the Gold Stars of today, just don't seem to last. Maybe I'm too clean with my appliances? The worst of them was the very expensive Panasonic. I was very disappointed in that one. For the very small appliances, when I was a young adult, everytime I would clean them, they were guarenteed not to work anymore. I'm almost afraid to get a new mixer. I haven't used Mom's old Sunbeam, except once, in so long a time, I don't want to break it. It doesn't do the kind of mixing I need these days, like cookie dough, or bread dough (I like kneading by hand, though), and I like mixing my cookie dough by hand_but my arm gets really bad when I do these things anymore. I must tell you, Debra, that Mike kept saying, yes, yes, yes, and you left him laughing, because it's the same story you would trade with him :o) LOL!!!!! The etiquette is still alive in Maytown, at the circle there. Of course it is still very Mom and Pop as far as I can tell, when I travel to the Vet's office. I've never had a problem with it, but then again :o) ......... Thanks for the laugh from Mike, this morning :o) He related to your driving story all the way!!! Well, better start getting ready for Storytime at the home!! Then get back to making my mother-in-law's birthday dinner for tomorrow. :o) Lynn Debra wrote: Oh, Mike and I could trade some stories!!? We seem to have exactly the same kind of luck.? I totally sympathize!? But speaking of --one other thing from today:? there were some appalling breaches of etiquette going on at the town circles today!!? I thought everyone understood the system for taking your turn.? I have never seen this happen on this scale before--I don't know if all the inconsiderate people arrived at the same time or if it was just a large bunch of people who had never seen a circle before and genuinely didn't know what to do.? Either way--very annoying! On the microwave note, your story below made me realize my parents are still on the first and only microwave they ever bought.? I have no idea how old that thing is!? It has got to be about 25 years old--I'll have to ask them!? But then they have extremely good luck with appliances--they'll be married 40 years in September and are only on their second refrigerator.

Well, I know when I went over to the Laural Mountains, I caught I-79 right outside of Pittsburgh & had a nice trip over to I-70 to Rt. 31. It was a good 3 1/2 hours! And only 2 1/2 hours coming back somehow, but it was a beautiful day too! Or maybe it just seemed to take less time. And the plus was I got home before dark. My daughter sure was glad to eat! Driving takes allot out of ya, doesn't it! I always wanted to travel as an occupation, but it'd be harder than I thought! This trip I drove the most I ever have had to do, but at least I picked a good time to do it!! Yes, I believe they have a special timer inside, and once you set the clock, and have it running, it times am and pm, until it has 365 plus 1 week of days covered, then it blows, because they all lasted exactly a year and a day, with the exception of one which only lasted 6 months but Mike lost the paperwork for it, so that was a loss, and this last one, which lasted a year and a half...hey, it was better than the rest. I keep the paperwork now, and they last, as I said, 1 year a 1 week, most times. Once my old, cheapo Gold Star, that I got from K-mart 20 some years ago, went, I haven't had any luck with microwaves. When I think about it, that one didn't have a clock. Hmmmmm!!!! Now, I have a thought :o) Maybe I shouldn't set the clock, then it won't know how many days have past :o) We had completely dry roads, also, but the thunder and lightning was right NEAR us, NEAR enough to do my micro in, and surge quite a few times. Oh, as for 462. I tried to get Mike to take that road to work, because of him complaining a lot about Rt. 30. I said it's better on the nerves to take that road. Hi Cathy. To the best of my knowledge, Stella is a German, English, and Italian name. Estelle is French; and Estrella is Spanish. I am unfamiliar with Efftla. I asked Google and got two hits, neither of which had any significance. Raber is a German name. I'm not sure about Reeher. Reher, perhaps? Poor Mike--I can't imagine driving that every day, twice a day!? (Crossing myself and blessing my ten-minute commute as I type.) I've definitely got to find a way around it next time.? I think I had myself convinced that the last time I experience all that it was because of the construction, but there wasn't any on that particular stretch this time. And the heat--it was between 90 and 95 the whole time I was down there, but as I drove west and climbed in elevation the temperature dropped.? It was about 83 the whole way through the mountains.? By the time I got home this evening it was a lovely 79 degrees.? (Which is really still about seven degrees too warm, but I'm taking it!) I don't blame you for buying the cheap microwaves--I can't believe you've had to buy that many!? But that sure was an impressive storm--so weird how it seemed to be centered over Lancaster.? Did you ever come into Columbia from Marietta way? Down over Chiques' Hill? It's absolutely breath-taking!!!!! I just wish I could capture it on a picture. I am so glad that the plan they had to build a highrise condominium_supposedly was suppose to be the highest in all of Lancaster County_fell through, because they didn't get zoning approval before they planned it all, then they were turned down? As John pointed out to me :o) that the first thing you see, when you click on Columbia, is a picture of a building. I had to go check it out for myself. The building you see is Bully's on Union, the tavern/rooming place that I talked about having had the bottle rocket cause the third floor to be badly burned, and the second to be damaged by smoke and water, but the tavern spared. And, if you are coming out of the doors of that building you see, and you walk a block down 462, from the door of Bully's, that is where those girls were in the accident. I have to scope the site out more, someday. Glad you found it interesting. :o) Lynn PS I found that site looking for articles on the accident. It was an eerie feeling when I called up Columbia, and the first thing I saw was Bully's. Sheila wrote: Lynn....thanks for the referral to the Lancaster County web site - it is very interesting!
Okay, where'd that go? I just hit reply, and lost your post immediately? I guess cyberspace. I was waving, as I didn't get to read all the posts of the day, but John and Joyce said, "our Debra is taking a road trip on Rt. 30". I thought they had a daughter named Debra, until I read your post about taking a road trip on Rt. 30, then I realized he meant OUR Debra :o) So, I WAS waving back when you passed!!!! And, you were only 6 1/2 blocks away from our house if you take the straight way to it. Now the way I gave, gets you right out front, so you go an extra 2 blocks, but yes, you did go almost right past our house :o) That storm you are talking about, fried our microwave oven again!!!! We lost 3 microwaves because of the lightening, and power surges. That's why I shut down and unplug my computer completely when I hear a storm coming. Guess I better start doing that with the microwave. In 5 years this is our 4th microwave, all fried from lightning storms. Not a good thing. WE started just getting really cheap ones after the really expensive one we had fried. And, the cheaper ones last a lot longer :o) We had to go out and get a new one, right after Mike came home from work :o( Luckily we found one exACTly the same as the one we have. I kicked my brother-in-law off the computer Yes, isn't that congestion wonderful !!!! My husband travels it everyday to go to work, over in York. You should have gotten off 30, came for a quick hello, and then gone on 462 West, which is only 2 blocks from our house to by-pass all that craziness, then you could have gotten back on to 30 along the way, and probably would have made time, when any other day, it would have taken you longer going that way :o) But, if you would have done that, you would have missed the gorgeous view of the Susquehanna!!!!! Hmmm, that's putting the cart before the horse, isn't it :o) Sometimes I don't understand developers at all. Anyway, if you ever get the chance to come over the hill on 441, do, because you will love the view of the Susquehanna from there. Once you follow the instructions for "this way to Lancaster" or "this way to York" there is not a single sign saying how many miles away either one of them is.? I thought that was weird. But yes--the congestion between those two cities!!? It about shredded my last nerve.? But then, just when you think your blood pressure will boil over, you get to the bridge across the Susquehanna and your breath is just completely taken away.? What an indescribably beautiful sight that is.? The Susquehanna is so broad and calm that if you didn't know what it was, you might think you were crossing a lake. I got some great buys at the Lancaster outlets, and stopped at the Gettysburg outlets on my way back.? I experienced a pretty fierce thunderstorm in Lancaster around 1:00 pm, but almost as soon as I left the city limits it was clear blue sky the whole way home.

Driving Route 30 is always one of my favorite things to do, and with the exception of that stretch between Lancaster and York, it was a great trip. Once you get on the other side of Chambersburg, Route 30 is just about sheer bliss the whole way to Greensburg, where it gets congested again. But between Chambersburg and Greensburg, it's nothing but gloriously rural, verdant, rolling Pennsylvania hills?and the open road, which is nicely challenging to drive!? Hi Cathy....I read your post earlier, and I replied to your email in the message since I have Wards, and Wrights in my genealogy. I have gotten a message back about it possibly being spam, and I tried to fill out the form, but that was blocked to. Please repond on this board, if you wish. I have a Caroline Penelope Ward and the line goes back to Whites from the areas you mentioned. What are the names of some of your Wards and Wrights? Thanks! My daughter just celebrated her birthday this week too, Rick. And my two sisters have birthday's this month too, & a couple others. I like what Karen Fox, said, "Do soemthing you love", or eat something you love! You just have to sometimes! Your the only one who knows how to please yourself! I got to cooking today, just made some macaroni salad. I haven't done that in like a long time! Used to have tons of family get-togethers,& fix it, but don't anymore, so treated myself, & fussed. It turned out very different, with a new ingredient, spicy brown mustard instead of yellow. I'll have to reserve judgment on how it turns out until my husband gets home today, but I think I liked it. It might be a staple from now on instead of the yellow! Tracy, that gumbo sounds good too, that was on here the other day! I copied that, so thanks for asking, "Ask & you shall receive!
