    3. Patti Messenger, if you are still out there, I am still picturing you being peeled off the ceiling fan, at the place where you stay when you go to your apple orchard, when your kitty dropped the mouse it was playing with, onto the bed for your husband, and it was still alive and ran off, with Kitty on its heels, and victorious in the end. LOL!!!! I can't wait to read more of other people's stories of their lives!!!! Patti's story can be found in the archives dated, October 5, 2006, under the subject Critters :o) We would love to read your stories, Sheila!!!!!! In glancing through my email, I saw where you also said you were writing stories about growing up in WV. Please, if they aren't something you think you are going to eventually publish, share them with us!!! I'll be reading the posts for a while, because of getting some work done around here, with my family research. I have neglected much of it, with the work being done on the house, and gotta get crackin' again. I'm working on extracting ROEDER info from some church records, if anyone is researching that name, and needs extractions from St. Paul's Summer Hill Cemetery, and church, for death and baptism, let me know, and I'll send them to you. Rick, I will send it to you for your BERKHEISER NOTES. I'll be reading everyone, and hopefully chiming in at times. :o) Lynn PS Didn't get a chance to try that Italian Bread recipe today_possible tomorrow, though the painters will be here to do the front porch, and I have some questions about some of the woodwork that wasn't fixed from the storm, so I'll be outside, I'm sure, tomorrow.

    1. [PD-LIFE] THE NIGHT OF THE BIG BOBCAT
    2. Sheila Kline
    3. Just read Lynn's post asking for me to share a story so here goes - one in the collection: BACK IN THE 1960'S, WHILE LIVING ON OUR FAMILY FARM IN MONROE COUNTY, WEST VIRGINIA, MY FAMILY AND I ENCOUNTERED SOME VERY STRANGE SOUNDS THAT WOULD MAKE THE HAIR STAND STRAIGHT UP ON YOUR ARMS - KIND OF LIKE IT WOULD FEEL WHEN THERE WAS A THUNDER AND LIGHTNING STORM NEARBY. MY MOM, MARY CATHERINE, TELLS ONE ABOUT THE TIME SHE HEARD THE BOBCAT SCREAM ALL NIGHT LONG. IT GOES LIKE THIS: THE LIGHTS HAD BEEN TURNED OUT, AND EVERYBODY WAS IN BED, TUCKED UNDER THEIR COVERS, ALL READY FOR A NIGHT OF QUIET, RESTFUL SLEEP...BUT IT WAS NOT TO BE THAT NIGHT. THAT NIGHT WAS DESTINED TO BE ONE THAT WOULD LONG BE REMEMBERED AS A NIGHT FULL OF UNREST WITH NERVES SET ON EDGE LIKE WHEN YOU'VE HEARD ONE SHOE DROP, AND YOU ARE WAITING, AND WAITING, AND WAITING FOR THE OTHER SHOE TO JOIN ITS MATE WE WERE STARTING TO DRIFT OFF TO THE LAND OF GREAT ADVENTURES, WHERE MY MOM HAD EAGLERLYJOINED US. WE WERE SWINGING ON MOONBEAMS WHEN SHE WAS ABRUPTLY JOLTED APART FROM US. SHE LEFT ADVENTURE LAND AND RETURNED TO THE REALITY OF HER BED WHERE SHE SAT STRAIGHT UP LIKE THE LINE DOWN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY. AT FIRST SHE DID NOT KNOW WHY SHE HAD BEEN SO STARTLED, WHY SHE HAD TO LEAVE THE WONDERFUL, IMAGINARY WORLD WHERE SHE WAS PREPARING TO FLY TO THE GREAT DEPTHS OF SPACE TO GATHER SUNSHINE FOR OUR APPROACHING DAY. THEN IT BECAME CLEAR WHAT HAD WAKENED HER FROM THAT PEACEFUL SLEEP....IT WAS THE LOUD, HOWLING , CRYING SOUND OF A BOBCAT OFF IN THE DISTANCE. SHE WOKE MY DAD FROM HIS SLEEP, AND SAID, "WAKE UP BILL. I HEAR A TERRIBLE, HOWLING, CRYING SOUND, AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS!" HE LISTENED AND THEN HEARD THE SAME LOUD, HOWLING, CRYING SOUND THAT SHE WAS HEARING.....BUT, HE KNEW WHAT IT WAS FOR HE HAD SPENT MANY OTHER YEARS ON THE FAMILY FARM WHERE HE GREW UP IN WOLF CREEK, MONROE COUNTY, WEST VIRGINIA. YES INDEED, HE HAD HEARD THAT SOUND BEFORE, AND HE KNEW THAT IT WAS THE SOUND OF A BOBCAT CALLING ITS MATE TO COME AND JOIN IT. HE SAID THAT THE SOUND WAS CALLED A "CATERWALT" SOUND THAT THEY MAKE WHEN THEY WANT THEIR MATE TO JOIN THEM. MY MOM THEN UNDERSTOOD WHY IT WAS HOWLING AND CRYING SOOOOOOOOO LOUD. IT WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT ITS MATE WOULD HEAR ITS CALL. MY MOM DID NOT WANT TO HEAR THAT SOUND AGAIN, SO SHE CALLED A RELATIVE NAMED JACKIE ARBAUGH TO COME OUT AND HUNT FOR IT. SO JACKIE CAME WITH HIS GUN AND SET OUT BACK IN THE HILLS ON THE FARM IN SEARCH FOR THE BOBCAT THAT HAD MADE THE HOWLING SOUND THAT HAD WAKENED MY MOM FROM HER SLEEP, AND HAD MADE US LOSE OUR SUNSHINE FOR THAT DAY. HE TRACKED IT, AND SOON FOUND EVIDENCE THAT IT WAS STILL THERE. HE WAITED PATIENTLY FOR IT TO COME, AND THEN HE TOOK AIM AND FIRED A SHOT FROM HIS GUN. THE BOBCAT FELL DEAD. JACKIE THEN PICKED UP THE DEAD BOBCAT AND HEADED BACK TO THE FARM HOUSE, ANXIOUS TO TELL MY MOM THAT HE HAD KILLED IT, AND THAT SHE WOULD NOT HAVE TO BE WAKENED FROM HER SLEEP ANYMORE BY THE SOUNDS OF THIS HUGE BEAST." HE WALKED UP THE LANE FROM BACK IN THE HILLS WITH HIS TREASURE IN TOW...AND RETURNED TO THE FARM HOUSE WHERE HE PUT THE BIG CAT THAT WEIGHED OVER 30 POUNDS DOWN IN FRONT OF THEM. MY MOM SAID THAT IT WAS SO BIG, AND SMELLED SO BAD THAT SHE WAS TRULY GLAD THAT IT HAD BEEN KILLED AND WOULD NOT BE A DANGER TO THEM, OR TO THE CHICKENS AND SHEEP ON THE FARM. THAT NIGHT WAS A LONG, LONG TIME AGO, AND MOM STILL TELLS THE STORY ABOUT THAT NIGHT WHEN SHE HEARD THE SOUND OF THAT BOBCAT. A SOUND THAT WILL NOT SOON FORGET. AND IN THESE PARTS, PEOPLE SAY THAT SOME NIGHTS YOU CAN HEAR A HOWL OFF IN THE DISTANCE, AND THAT IT IS THE SOUND OF ITS MATE, CALLING AND WAITING, AND CALLING AND WAITING FOR ANOTHER INVITATION. NOW LISTEN, CAN YOU HEAR IT HOWL? OWWWWWWWWWWW! 3. Hi everyone! Always nice to hear what everyone is up to these days. :-) We really didn't do that much this weekend since I had to work, but late Sunday afternoon we did drive southeast from where we live to the Lake of the Woods near Bremen, IN. Then we drove into Bremen and ate supper at McDonald's. We always order off the Dollar Menu ordering 3 McChickens, one large fries to split, and three drinks. We had the whole place to ourselves. Saturday night for supper we built a bonfire out back and roasted hot dogs. With all the rain we've had, the mosquitoes were awful so we didn't stay outside for very long. Monday we drove over to Michigan City, IN to shop at Lighthouse Place Outlets. I needed a new shirt and bought 3 new ties at Van Heusen, and bought a new glass storage dish at the Corning Ware store to replace the one my dad broke the other day. Since my parents and I always split up when we shop, I didn't know they had bought a dish, too. :-) We ate lunch at Arby's and started for home. My parents split a Market Fresh Turkey sandwich and I had the whole thing, large curly fries, and 3 drinks. Just as we turned onto to our road to where we live, my parents van up and died. Luckily we stalled not far from where my Uncle Harold keeps his tow truck. We called my brother Terry on the cellphone to come and pick us up and the van was towed to Harold's garage. Harold rebuilt our engine a year ago, but we think its something else. My parents bought this van new in 1993. That's about it. I have a bunch of the CDs that I sometimes put in my CD player here on the computer & listen though. I put one of the REO speedwagon in the other night though & listened to it, after we were talking of them. I remember when I was dating my husband he installed a 8-track player in my car at the time! 3. Hi all, Bleach (sodium hypochlorite) is a strong oxidation agent (read rust for oxidation) that can cause serious damage to tombstones and should NEVER be used on tombstones. 1. Re: [PD-LIFE] MARY'S RETIREMENT ACTIVITIES
    2. marysaerie
    3. Hello, Connie, Sheila, and All. My birthday was Friday. I turned 59, so one is never too young or too old. As of right now, my back yard renovation project has been pushed out to spring. My brother is so booked up that he wouldn't be able to get to me until October. We already have night temperatures down in to the 40s, so by October, we'll be in to the 30s. I got to thinking that we are going to have to dig up our roses and other plants and put them in buckets until they can be re-planted. In October, they would either freeze in the buckets, or they would die in the ground because they wouldn't have time enough to re-establish a root base before winter set in. I've already gone through losing all my plants once, I don't want to do it again. Sooooo that project has been pushed out. I will keep you up to date on my other goals. As far as the book I am editing/co-authoring goes...... let me say this: I was just trying to be of service to my friend, Tony, to give him an idea of what types of grammatical/lingual errors he was making, in the hope of giving him tools with which to improve his writing skills. I never in this world expected to become the professional editor on the project. However, I learned something of value: editors just mark up the copy and return it to the author for change; when one actually makes the changes for the author, one becomes a co-author. I challenged this, because I really didn't want my name on the book, but apparently Tony checked with the publisher and was given that information to pass on to me. I offered to withdraw and let someone else of the publisher's choice become the editor, but nope! I stepped in it, and now I have to put up with the stink, so to speak. Tony will have no one else. He tried another editor, but that person didn't have the feel for the attitude of the story and in editing it, changed it completely. Wow! Did Tony have a fit! He is very adamant that I remain on the project. Now, this book is not something I would have written. It is totally out of my realm of interests. It is science-fiction about a woman and her son who were assassinated. The woman is brought back by the government as a cyborg-type secret weapon. There is espionage and mystery and all sorts of goings on. However, the book is very graphic; very bloody; the language is not what I would use; and some of the topics covered - though very prominent in headlines today - are quite unsettling. That is why I did not want my name on the book. However, all of that aside, I will be getting paid for my services if the book sells, so I am viewing this as a job. Who knows where it may lead!? That aside, I have actually started collecting things for a sort of auto-biography of my own. I, too, came from simple beginnings, as did my folks. My Mother's paternal line (GOEPPEL/GABLE) came from Saxony, Germany (we have many cousins over there); her maternal line (PLOUGHMAN/PLOWMAN) came from England or perhaps Ireland. I haven't been able to track them back across, yet. My Father's paternal line (SAEMANN/ SEAMAN/SAYMAN) originated from Obermoschel, Bavaria, Germany and may even have come from Switzerland before then; his maternal line (MAYO) from Wales. My concentration of research has been my father's paternal line because they are the people with whom I am most familiar. I have no children who will carry on, so whatever I write down, I am doing for myself. Perhaps another generation will take an interest down the road. Hugs to all, Mary ----- Original Message ----- From: twerppy@aol.com To: padutch-life@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, September 03, 2007 4:15 PM Subject: Re: [PD-LIFE] MARY'S RETIREMENT ACTIVITIES Now it is catching.? Connie Hi Mary......I am so impressed with your "unending list" of wonderful projects and activities that you have planned to start/finish after your recent retirement. First, let me wish you HAPPY RETIREMENT!! I would love to know more about your projects as you tackle them, and I am interested to know what the book is about your are co-writing/editing with your friend. It sounds as if is an "in-depth" project, as well as the building, yard work, etc. I too am in the process of writing short stories about my WV childhood on our family life. My plans are to include them in what I am calling "The Second Creek Chronicles" - just plain folk stories about a city turned kid introduced to a new life in the hills and hollers of WV. For a brief flavor of my writing style - I have done one about the time my mom and dad ventured into the attic of our "old" farm house, and killed bats - many bats by burning sulphur and swatting them with tennis racktets....it's called "The B&T Story (not BLT) ----bats and tennis rackets. It was quite an event, and left some funny memories to write about. I interject humor with excitement, and tell the stories in the "John Boy Style", or as the boy who tells "The Christmas Story"did in reliving his childhood days. I am doing it for fun, and a way to remember the past. As Lynn is writing hers to leave for her daughter, I am writing mine to never let go of the simplier days in life! Best wishes as you continue on your journey and most of all, please enjoy this "new found" time!! We will be waiting to hear about your progress! 3. I have a headstone that is in French and I will go back with a water bottle to squirt on the stone. The local newspaper so botched my sister's obituary that it reminds us not to place full faith in newspaper listings! Thanks for the tip, Anna -----Original Message----- From: padutch-life-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:padutch-life-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Richard Berkheiser Sent: Monday, September 03, 2007 3:13 PM To: padutch-life@rootsweb.com Subject: [PD-LIFE] Tombstone Reading Hi List: I just read an article and thought I would pass it on. They said to make worn tombstones writings more legible to brush off dust etc. then use a squirt bottle of water. One time when we visited a Massachusetts grave yard and I took pictures in the rain the tombstones were very legible. I wish I had thought of all this on my past summer trip to Berks Co graveyards! Sally -------------------- Hope everyone is having a great Labor Day Weekend. :-) I'll have to go back into my files, but as long as you're not using a chemical based product its OK. Its not recommended to do any rubbings on the stone of any kind as it further deteriorates the already fragile and worn inscription. The approach that works best for me is taking a picture of the inscription with a good digital camera or a high end 35 mm camera. I use a Cannon AE-1 that my parents bought me in 1981. Another way is using a mirror reflecting on the inscription. I do have a question for anyone that might know. What's the safest way to remove moss and mildew from a tombstone? I've encountered this on numerous trips to cemeteries with my ancestor's stones covered in the stuff. Thanks! 3. Lynn, Actually my birthday is August 31st; and at 00:00:01 on 9/1 I officially retire. BIG SMILE Mary -------------------- Whoops! I'm a little behind on monitoring my lists because I had to work all weekend. It was the big Urgency Sale for Sherwin-Williams, and I had to work all day with the new girl and it actually made more work for me, unfortunately. At least I was by myself Sunday. I'm off today and Tuesday. Either way, congratulations on your upcoming retirement! :-) Rick B

    2. Now it is catching.? I think it is wonderful to have talented people on this list.? Wish I had the time to do the same.? Maybe I need to get a few years older.? Still too young.? Not 70 yet.?
