    1. [PD-LIFE] Obit Help Needed
    2. Karen Fox
    3. If anyone has access to the Philadelphia newspaper archives, I need help finding an obit for my gr-grandmother. I have a copy of the itemized undertaker's bill for her funeral expenses and one of the items paid for was "For Paper Notices $5.00". I assume this was for notices in the newspaper(s), although none were specifically mentioned by name. Her name was Clara HIRST (born ECKARD, sometimes spelled as Eckart) the wife of John Grubb HIRST She was born 08 Apr 1869 in Philadelphia PA, dau of John ECKARD and Margaret J. DAVIS She died 30 May 1914 in Philadelphia PA. According to her Death Certificate, her last address was 1250 N. Taney Street. She was buried in Mt. Peace Cemetery. The funeral bill itemizes the use of an auto hearse and 6 carriages. BTW, The total bill for her funeral expenses was $194.00 in 1914. Thanks, Karen from Berks County

    1. [PD-LIFE] Jane Austin/Pets
    2. Lynn Vondran
    3. Hi Cathy!! Have you ever heard of the movie Persuasion? That's another good one to watch. Since I have this Chemical Sensitivity, and can't go hardly ANYwhere, especially to a movie theater, my husband gets all the versions of each of the GOOD Jane Austin movies for me. My brother-in-law, and sister-in-law always laugh when they come into our half of the house, because most times, I have one of these movies in, just for background noise ;o) LOL!!!!! I'm sorry, but they just relax me so much, and when you are that relaxed, your housework is a joy!!!! Espeicially when you have to do it everyday, just to keep the place halfway presentable. I'm sure once I have all this STUFF out of here, and once the cats are no longer living (and I'm not wishing them dead, believe me!!!!), and we can vent the dryer outside instead of into a little dryer vent thingy, it will be so much easier to keep clean. It's the lint, cat litter, and cat hair/fur that is present daily that drives me into crazy cleaning all the time :o) When your husband thanks God that you have a computer just so he sees you sit for more than 5 minutes at a time, you know you must be constantly doing, doing, doing. I just don't recognize it. He laughs, even when he comes in the house, because he sees the Jane Austin DVD playing for Lexus, and I'm often off somewhere doing something. Well, Lexus even likes them. WE catch her watching what is going on on the TV many, many times_only she doesn't sit in front of it like the RCA Victor dogs did. No, she is the lazy TV watcher. She is usually on her bed, looking up at it, and every now and then, she raises her head, and watches intently at some of the really good parts. Mike and I sit back and watch her_then look at one another and laugh!!!!! Once again, our pets are such a JOY!!!!!! and blessing! :o) Cathy wrote: "Mansfield Park", Lynn your going to have to tell me more, because I don't think I've ever seen or heard of that one?! What year did it come out & what's the plot?

    1. [PD-LIFE] Bread?
    2. Lynn Vondran
    3. Well, Gang, I just made the same bread I made before many times, using half of the dough I use for making homemade pizza, and didn't like it back then. The ONLY changes I made this time were 1) I bought a new GLASS bread baking dish 2) I mix the dry yeast in with all the dry ingredients including the portion of wheat flour, then add the lukewarm water, and mix it well before adding the rest of the ingredients and 3) I brush the top first with oil, then before the last 5 minutes of baking I brushed it with egg white. It tastes GREAT! Now, my question is, why would all of this make the yeast not smell and taste so strongly, as it ALWAYS did before, except for when I made that GREAT recipe Anna Bristol gave us quite a while ago? Is there some secret thing I did this time? All you bread bakers, did what I did this time make that difference? WOW! Now all I want to do is bake bread!!!!! :o) I didn't make that recipe I found in my sister-in-law's cookbook yet, but since this came out so good, I'll probably try it for the weekend's company. :o) Lynn

    2. Oh, Lynn, we are of like minds.? Soon we will continue in this direction until we have no say in our lives as it will be regulated by all those stupid 'helpful' laws on the books.? Wonder why kids revert to vandalism.? Could be they are kept from having REAL fun.? Have no clue anymore what it is.? Sooooo.? We destroy to get the attention.? Connie -----Original Message----- From: Lynn Vondran <lynnvondran@att.net> To: padutch-life@rootsweb.com Sent: Thu, 6 Sep 2007 9:44 am Subject: [PD-LIFE] Personal Responsibility I agree with Connie, it's such a shame that kids these days don't have this wonderful experience because we can't accept responsibility for the consequences of our own actions!!! The sad thing is that we can't go back to these days, except in our memories, because of the abounding law suits this kind of thing would bring. Too many people are sue happy over everything in their lives, and too many are being granted money for ignorance. I could see this senario panning out today, someone experiencing the joys of this kind of riding, the kids act up a bit, one falls out, gets hit by the car following, and the parents of the kid who was hit, would sue the owner of the car following instead of taking on the responsibility for the injuries or death of their child. This is why we need the laws we have today. You are absolutely correct, Connie. Mike and I have GREAT discussions about this at least once a week, when we are reminiscing about our childhoods, and the things we were allowed to do, because we were responsible for our own actions. Hah, I wouldn't have ANY stories to tell about the Tully, if back then were like today!!! We started experiencing it toward the end of our adventurous years, where we were told by those in charge that we weren't allowed to do the things we did for years, and that our parents did for even more years of their lives. We get into this discussion when we hear them attacking the fast food places and how they are being regulated because THEY are making people fat, not the fact that people don't have self control making them fat :o) or that they CAN'T possibly teach their children what to eat and not to eat. LOL!!!!! It's sad. So much happiness is lost these days, but understandably so, with the way the courts rule anymore. 2. Tracy
    3. Hi List, I just whipped this recipe together, thought it was great tasting and figured I'd share with whomever would like it. 1 bunch fresh broccoli 1 head fresh cauliflower 2 c shredded cheese (I had Taco cheese on hand) 2 sm (10 oz) plain yogurt 2 shakes Worchestershire sauce 1 Tbs Dijon mustard 2 shakes hot sauce black pepper, Mrs. Dash, parsley flakes, garlic powder Clean broccoli and cauliflower. Cut into even sizes. Spray bottom of a 9" x 13" baking dish, and arrange cut pieces. Mix together remaining ingredients and pour over broccoli and cauliflower. Bake at 350* for an hour or so (until veggies are tender). Next time I am going to try using frozen veggies. Enjoy! tracy ____________________________________________________________________________________ Got a little couch potato? 3. I agree too. Pour or squirt plain water and it comes out much clearer. Also, towards the end of the day sometimes works better. I guess what I mean is when the sun does not shine directly on the stone. And I've found that taking black and white pictures sometimes works better than taking colored pictures. I always take several pictures of each stone using both my digital and 35mm. My friend Lois and I were visiting cemeteries this past week in Miami Co. Ohio. We found a few stones in this one cemetery where someone had done rubbings. Lois said right away, oh oh...... How could she tell I asked? Because we saw colors on the stones, and she knew the colors didn't belong there. I haven't done this, so please don't yell at me..... but I have a question please: would a soft toothbrush with just plain water help take off the algea and the dirt, at the "bottom" of some tombstones? Any type of really really soft brush?? I'm thinking soft like a makeup brush?? Or just stick with water? I know Lois and her family just paid for some company to come from Cincinnati to clean and repair stones in a family cemetery they had found just this year. It was thought to be lost, but Lois and another lady found it on private property, and the family there has been very good about allowing them to clean it up. They(several ladies) did an excellent job. They cleared out years of weeds and also found some stones that were knocked over and buried several inches underground. When the stones were found and unearthed, it also provided dates for research that they didn't have before. Needless to say, they are very happy campers. :) All of our children think we are nuts! ;) We would almost rather go visit cemeteries than go shopping!! But we never forget to go to go to lunch. :) That's my cemetery story from Ohio. Regards... Kathy L. 1. [PD-LIFE] "THE GREEN HORNET"
    2. Sheila Kline
    3. THERE WE WERE, THE QUEEN OF SHEBA, AND THE PRINCESS OF POSSUM HOLLOW, SITTIN' PRETTY, AND RIDING IN HIGH, COUNTRY STYLE. IT WAS SUNDAY AFTERNOON, AND TIME TO VISIT GRANDMA AND GRANDPA, AND THAT VISIT MEANT THE PLEASURE OF RIDING IN THE BACK OF THE "GREEN HORNET". THERE WERE FIVE OF US BACK THEN, COUNTIN' MAMA AND DADDY, AND ONLY ONE SEAT, SO THAT PLACED THE "ROYALTY" IN THE BACK OF THE FAMILY'S 3/4 TON PICK-UP TRUCK THAT DAD HAD NAMED "THE GREEN HORNET". IT WAS AN APPROPRIATE NAME CAUSE' IT WAS GREEN IN COLOR, AND IT RAN LIKE A HORNET.... FLYING IN SPURTS...STOP AND START.....STOP AND START. SOMETIMES IT STOPPED, AND SOMETIMES IT STARTED, AND WE NEVER KNEW IN WHICH ORDER THE TWO WOULD OCCUR. BUT....................... THE "GREEN HORNET", WAS THE RIDE OF THE BOWYER FAMILY, NOT ONE OF CHOICE, BUT ONE OF NECESSITY FOR IT COULD HAUL JUST ABOUT ANYTHING NEEDED ON A FARM....BALES OF HAY, CHICKEN FEED, PITCH FORKS AND SHOVELS, AND ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON'S, IT WAS THERE WAITIN' IN FRONT OF THE HOUSE, READY TO ACCOMODATE US FOR A VISIT THAT WOULD TAKE US AWAY FROM THE MULTITUDE OF CHORES THAT WERE NORMALLY THERE JUST BEGGIN' TO BE DONE. MAMA, DADDY, AND MY YOUNGER BROTHER, BILLY GOT THE PLEASURE OF RIDING UP FRONT, BUT THAT DIDN'T BOTHER MY SIS AND I, FOR WE WERE RATHER ACCUSTOMED TO RIDIN' IN SUCH HIGH, COUNTRY STYLE. WE EVEN HAD TWO LAWN CHAIRS THAT WE SITUATED AGAINST THE BACK WINDOW, NEAR ENOUGH TO MAMA AND DADDY THAT THEY COULD OCCASIONALLY LOOK BACK TO SEE IF WE WERE STILL THERE. WE CERTAINLY WERN'T SCARED 'CAUSE AFTER ALL, WHO WOULD HARM THE QUEEN OF SHEBA, AND THE PRINCESS OF POSSUM HOLLOW? WE EVEN DRESSED FOR THE OCCASION, AND CONSIDERED OURSELVES IN HIGH FASHION BEFITTING OUR SELF-ORDAINED TITLES. AFTER ALL, WE HAD BEEN TAUGHT THAT SUNDAY RIDES CALLED FOR PRETTY GINGHAM DRESSES, FANCY PATENT LEATHER SHOES, AND WHITE GLOVES WITH BUTTONS ON THEM. AND TO COMPLETE SUCH GRAND ATTIRE, OUR HAIR WOULD BE SWEPT UP HIGH ON OUR HEADS TO KEEP IT FROM BLOWIN' TOO MUCH IN THE WIND AS WE HEADED DOWN THE ROAD FROM PICKAWAY TO SNOWFLAKE. OF COURSE, TO MAKE SUCH A SPLENDID JOURNEY, WE HAD TO BE SEATED, AND WE HAD LEARNED THE ART OF CLIMBIN' INTO OUR "GREEN HORNET" CHARIOT WHILE WE WERE DRESSED IN SUCH FINERY. THE TWO LAWN CHAIRS WENT IN FIRST, AND THEN WE GRASPED OUR DRESSES TIGHTLY, AS WE GAVE A HEAVE, HO JUMP FROM THE BUMPER, AND OVER THE TAILGATE. THE THOUGHTS OF THE GRAND ADVENTURE THAT AWAITED US MADE THIS TRANSITION JUST A MINOR INCONVENIENCE, ESPECIALLY SINCE THE ALTERNATIVE WAS TO STAY HOME ON THE FARM WITH ALL THOSE CHORES THAT WERE BEGGIN' TO BE DONE! ONCE WE WERE ALL SEATED, DADDY WOULD GIVE "THE GREEN HORNET" THE SIGNAL TO START, AND THE QUEEN OF SHEBA, AND THE PRINCESS OF POSSUM HOLLOW DRESSED IN SUNDAY FINERY WOULD MAKE YET ANOTHER JOURNEY. A JOURNEY THAT WOULD TODAY BE PART OF THE SPECIAL MEMORIES OF THE YEATERDAYS OF LONG AGO. DAYS THAT INCLUDED SPECIAL RIDES IN A RATHER COMMON, ROYAL COACH. Hope you enjoy this little yarn about days that are now part of my "Second Creek Chronicles". 1. [PD-LIFE] Zucchini, Corn, and Onion
    2. Lynn Vondran
    3. Hi Gang, Well, I just finished up my Zucchini, Corn, and Onions. I'm still hungry for it. Mike said it tasted like a VERY good creamed corn; I agree. 1 large Zucchini (peeled and sliced thinly) 1 medium to large onion (depending on your taste, diced, but not small) 1/2 to 1 stick margarine or butter 1 bag frozen sweet corn *In a large frying pan, simmer the zucchini, and onion until transparent. *Add bag of frozen corn, and simmer until your liking, adding a half stick margarine or butter. NOTE: I simmer for a very long time, until the zucchini and onion are mushy. I eat this as the main dish, or a smaller portion as a side dish. It's going into THE MANUAL for sure! :o) Lynn
