We hope your survived the cold night. Why is it that furnaces always seem to go on the blink when it is the coldest, or the hottest? (Yes, Lynn..... you really did read that correctly!! LOL WE have central air conditioning, which runs off the furnace.) If it were me, I'd have to call a repairman with the minus degree temps we are having. Even with all three cats, the dog, and our down blankets would it ever be warm enough. <smile> Hugs, Mary -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of P Dyer Sent: Thursday, January 15, 2009 8:26 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [PD-LIFE] Weather in Pat's house ...and our furnace went on the fritz today. Hi Cathy, I would imagine that system is in any kind of computer, or am I wrong on that? I can't see Bill Gates just making it for laptops only. It's like someone said, we'll eventually get use to it, but it certainly did change the way my scanner works_I REALLY don't like that, and will only use the scanner on the XP that Mike now has. That was my old computer. Better keep moving here. We are looking for a grocery store, today. Cathy, you better send very warm hugs back to your folks in Ohio! :o) Lynn
Lynn, If you don't drink a lot of coffee and want some really good ones to try, sign up with Boca Java. They also have teas. By normal standards, it is a little pricey, but well worth the money for great coffee, once you have found the ones you like. You can buy already ground or whole bean to grind your own fresh; and they come I a variety of grinds: light, medium, and dark roasted. I have also tried Gevalia, but I don't like them as well, and they are more expensive. As far as store coffees go, I love Maxwell House, 8 O'clock, and Folgers. We also have tried some of the grinds from The Dollar Store or Big Lots, if you have those stores around you. I have to say I found some of the best coffee there, but also some of the very worst... YUCK!!! Ptooey!!! Those make good 'mixers'. You'll find the ones that you like by sampling. Have fun!! Hugs, Mary PS I cancelled my doctor's appointment, but we still have one at noon to look at a building that's for sale. It is 10:00 AM and only '0' degrees. At 6:00 AM, it was -10° without the wind chill figured in........ I'm ready for spring to be sprung! -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Lynn Vondran Sent: Thursday, January 15, 2009 6:42 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [PD-LIFE] THE MANUAL and stuff Hi Sally!! So, someone where Mike works brought in a packet of the coffee they get delivered to their house. I was anxious to try it out, to compare it to the Folgers we already had. We think we like the coffee my "Aunt" Becky serves us when we visit with her on the 4th of July. She uses 8 O'clock Coffee. So far, it's winning in the taste contest :o) Lynn
WOW!!!!!! You people in OHIO be very careful IF you go out!!! We just got an email from Mike's one aunt saying that they had -14 natural degrees this morning with a wind chill factor of -33. The dogs paws freeze when they go out, and aren't even out for more than a potty break. That's cold!!!! They are expecting a high of zero today. Take care all you Ohioans! Hope you are hunkering down for the day! or two, or three???? for the winter? Warm hugs from Columbia_no, it's not warm here, but a lot warmer than you are. :o) Lynn PS Mary be very careful today, in your traveling!
There is Win7 coming through to "fix" the issues some are having with Vista. I am not sold on the idea that it is ready for the general public, more aimed at the higher end user from what I have heard. Knock on wood, I've only had the usual problems with Vista compared to XP, other than "operator error". When we bought our last two computers, we were not able to have anything other than Vista loaded on it. Since then, some places do allow for the back-rev to XP. The big thing for me was learning the new and improved stuff. Some things I like, some things I don't. But that's par for the course. It's been so long since I've HAD to use DOS commands to fix a problem or search for something, I've almost forgotten them all! And yes Connie, if they didn't plan obsolescence, how would they all stay in business? ;-) You've now figured out the business plan for most high tech companies! Yep, I am on my second one of those. AT least they warn you that they are wearing out. Mike just bought me a new UPS_I always thought it was a Universal Power Supply_oops! I've had my old one these 9 years. Anyway, he is taking my old one for the time being, until he can get himself a new one, and hooking up the new one for me. We lost so many microwaves on regular power supplies, so I am just unplugging that when not in use. Everything is on a power surge protector in our house. Seems we have a lot of surges in this area. :o) Lynn Don in AZ wrote: Surge protectors have different ratings, but most of them that you buy in a local store are not the best. When I worked for the defense contractor part of my work was to design surge/lightning protection systems for large computer facilities. They even sent me to school to become a certified "expert" in protection. (LOL about the expert.) Most surge protectors deteriorate with use. Each time they take a surge they lose some of their effectiveness. After a while they become totally ineffective. The best surge protection is what is called an Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS). A UPS converts AC house current to DC battery current and then back to AC current. Even though they are more expensive, they do not deteriorate like a surge protector does, and they provide much better protection.
Yes, our last computer was like that , I never backed up the pictures, & when something happened I took it to our local computer place, & he said he couldn't retrieve my pictures, I was heartbroken. Can you all tell me what to do? Someone has sent me a CD, but don't know how to put pictures onto a CD, & even had other things on there as well. I'm getting many things on this computer, & yes, I've got XP & haven't had any trouble so to speak with it, Lynn. Isn't Vista on laptops? Yes, My daughter has one too, as of a couple months ago, so finally getting alittle experience with one, which is pretty cool, though, haven't had the chance for much experience, because she's not living at home, & doesn't bring it home either that I'm able to fuss with it much! Someday! And yes, I'm having coffee now, & am wired now. I usually only have a couple if that a day, & have had three cups too. They're saying 10 degrees in Nashville, TN I assume, & we're getting to have wind chill for us too, here in Central GL. Noon supposed to be only 50, but wind chill overnight, supposed to be highs in the 50's, friday highs supposed to be 58, which is pretty much COLD for us here in Central FL. Glad that I've got a warm winter coat for my baby for running around tomorrow! Glad those people all made it out of that plane this afternoon. That's pilor certainly was the hero if you ask me! May I've never heard of the arrowroot as a thickening agent. That's interesting, but have for flour & cornstarch. It's interesting that all do the same job though. Does it come like they do at the store, or do you order it through the mail? I was wondering along these lines, does anyone know about making a hamburger gravy with cornstarch> If so please post it. Or perhaps I'll talk to my mother about it soon. She used to make this & we would boil potatoes & eat vegies with it, when I grew up & reading about these emails brought up the memory, I guess! It works like cornstarch and flour, but it usually takes less of it. It also assumes the taste of whatever you are thickening so you never get that 'taste' you get with the other two. You need to mix it with cool water before adding it to what you are thickening. It will set up really quickly when you add the water (like Lynn said, you can eat it with a fork if you aren't quick), but a few drops more make it into a nice smooth mixture. I use a touch of sour crème (sometimes with chives) in my mashed potatoes. There are times when I don't even have to add any butter (or margarine - I personally use Land 'O Lakes 'Fresh Buttery Taste' because it tastes like butter, is very healthy for me, and was recommended by my nutritionist) to them. I also use a touch of sour crème in my tuna fish salad instead of using so much mayonnaise. For a real treat, add some celery, garlic, and onion powders to your tuna. That's after you add freshly chopped onion and some sweet relish. YUM!! Ok, dag nab it.... now you guys have got me talking about food, and I'm starting to drool!!!! I just used cornstarch to thicken my hot chili pepper sauce the other night, and it got good, but you have to be careful how much you use, because it is a sneaky sort of thickener_before you know it, it can be cut with a fork and chewed, instead of slurped from a spoon :o) Lynn ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
