To be "speedy" VISTA needs 3 or 4 GIGs RAM. If he has that and it still is slow--I'd check into whatever anti-virus software he is using--it might be causing the slowdown. I find VISTA MUCH faster than XP but then I have much more RAM than I did when using XP too. VISTA offers that nifty sidebar where you can add a systems resources monitor and that can show you how much of a drain your programs have on the system which can help you figure out what is slowing things down. Joan PS: I was terrified of VISTA before I got this computer last April but it didn't take me long to adapt and prefer it to XP--but I had SP1 installed from the get go. Well, Tracy we're not used to the winds here in Central FL! The winds have certainly been colder here today. We always have a wind sometimes wave thru the carport, well this morning it was down right COLD! I was glad of the weather report to the extent of the wind chill factors & such & the cool, dry weather they're fussing down here about. And supposed to be having another 24 hours or more of this COLD winds & artci like winds & lower temps for the rest of the week & another flow of cold air next week too! Bring it on, I say. It's a nice cooler change, to wear my "winter clothes" sweats & such that I break out to wear, while I'm out in the mornings! I'm glad I remembered to buy a winter coat for my 3 year old last year, & thankfully he's able to wear it still! It was part of an outfit, with pants & long sleeve shirt to match! If you do get snow, Tracy let me know, so I can get up there to share a snowball with you okay! Connie- You should run the battery down in that the battery is RECHARGEABLE and recharges whenever you plug in the laptop. So you are NOT wearing it out by letting it run down--you are giving it a longer life. It is best to unplug the laptop when you have it turned off also. That will help to run down the battery a bit. The thing with the rechargeable batteries is that they "learn" so if you never use them they will lose their charge but if you run them down (just like a phone battery) then they will take a full charge the next time you plug in the computer. The battery isn't to keep a backup when the computer is off--that is a different battery--not the one that powers the laptop when it is unplugged. Joan In a message dated 1/16/2009 1:53:24 P.M. Connie- You are speaking about VISTA as if there is something WRONG with VISTA and that really isn't true. VISTA is an excellent and stable operating system provided all of the patches and Service Pack #1 are installed AND provided you are not attempting to use outmoded peripherals with it. VISTA is much more stable than XP and earlier Operating Systems and also handles multimedia and graphics much more smoothly than XP. Some people who used VISTA 64 bit find that older 32 bit programs don't run well but there are very few problems with the 32 bit version of VISTA with service pack 1 installed. Eventually 64 bit will be standard--but we are still in a transition period and many older programs can't run on the 64 bit VISTA at this time. Also, users who attempt to use VISTA and don't have sufficient RAM often run into problems. VISTA works best with a minimum of 3 GIGs RAM although MS says it will run on 2 GIGs--just not very well. <g> Joan In a message dated 1/16/2009 1:45:41 P.M. I believe I just read from someone on the list that it is Windows 7? Maybe that is why Mike is holding off getting a laptop of his own. Being a computer analyst/programmer, he doesn't like the mess that some of the things we ran into, that should be very easy to do, were not smoothly done. After a hard day's work, he doesn't need the headache that Bill Gates offers with Vista. Some say it shouldn't have ever been released to the public_we agree!!! When he wants to calm down from work, I let him play my Mahjong games. He has to have it far away from him to see it. Yes, I wish the screen were farther away, too, but I really like the fact that I can take the laptop and work on it wherever I want to, as long as I have a socket to plug in my surge protector. Anyone with a laptop know of ways to make your battery last longer? I heard you are suppose to let the battery run all the way down once a month, to prolong its life, but I haven't read that yet in any of my books, yet. Anyone ever hear of that? What's the whole scoop on doing that? Thanks! Have to eat, and get ready for shopping. Stay warm, take care this weekend, and don't forget to let me know if you want to be on the Monday emailing of THE MANUAL. Also, in case you can't open THE MANUAL, one of our list members, Brenda, sent through something that might help you. If you can't open it, just let me know and I'll pass the message on to you again, and hope it helps. Have a GREAT weekend!!!
