    3. Thanks, Joan :o) It's weird, because as soon as I boot it up in the morning, I look to see if it's below 100% and it's always at that. I'll let it run down once a month or so. But never let it plugged in, when I'm not using it_well, I do let it in sleep mode, if I know I'm getting back on in a few minutes. Checked the ram, and it is only 2. Mistake :o( We should have gotten more ram. Oh well, live and learn. Thanks everyone for all the advice. This list is great! Hugs from a very, very cold Columbia. As I just told Peggy, we are at 6 degrees, and they said to look at possible below zero. We are at a wind-chill factor of something like 4 below. Take care one and all, and those who are cold, bundle up!!! 2. Hi, Lynn- Jane gave the instructions for running/using your battery which does extend the battery life. But you can also run the battery down a bit just by having the laptop unplugged when you have it shut down. When you plug it in and reboot you should see the battery status icon in your systray next to the clock. That is the reading you get by hovering the cursor that you mention below. I'm not sure what the "little black box" is that you refer to...perhaps it is a laptop surge suppressor? Joan In a message dated 1/16/2009 9:30:35 P.M. 3. Thanks, Jane. How often are you supposed to do this? My sister-in-law said that her manual says once a month? Does that sound right? Yes, I don't like the way my scanner works, with VISTA. I don't have near the options when I hook it up to my laptop, so I have to go back to my old XP, which is in my office right now, but will soon be upstairs in Mike's office, once he gets a week off work. My old 98 is going to my brother-in-law, if Mike has a place to put some sort of drive (don't know what kind) in the XP. Either way, I still have to use my old XP. He said he is getting me a new scanner and printer someday. Maybe they will work better with the VISTA. Thanks again. :o) Lynn Jane wrote: To run the battery down, just work with the laptop unplugged until you get the message to plug it back in because the battery is almost out. I try not to run on battery too much because they are so expensive to replace once they wear out. As for VISTA. I simply hate it. I have programs I have been using since I was running Windows 95 and which I love and which are easy and do what I need them to do. Most will not run with VISTA so instead of using my laptop all of the time, I have to go back to Hanks desktop which means sitting in his office instead of my nice cozy chair with my laptop. Wish I could go back to XP. I still have trouble finding things I have saved since it seems to put them in places I didn't ask it to. Oh well....

    3. When you unplug your laptop from the wall and the little box with the computer turned off that normally does not run the battery down. If you are using it running on battery and the battery gets low and needs charging, the computer will beep or tell you some other way that it needs to be charged. You can then plug it in and it will charge. It is best to plug it into the wall outlet first and then the computer, as the transformer in the little box will absorb the surge instead of your computer getting the surge applied to it. Don in AZ

    3. Your laptop uses either a NICAD battery or a NIMH battery. It is a good idea to run the battery down now and then and then recharge it. That will not hurt it at all. It is the same type battery as your cell phone has, just higher voltage and of course, a larger size. Your papers that came with your laptop should explain that. >From time to time I use my laptop on battery, and have been doing that at least once a week for the last year and a half, and it has not hurt it. 1. [PD-LIFE] NuWave
    2. Lynn Vondran
    3. Tracy, Yeppers!!!! I haven't used my conventional oven/stove for a long time_almost a year, now!!! Oh, now wait, I did roast the bigger turkey in the conventional oven, but did one of the smaller ones, in the NuWave for Thanksgiving. We loved it! Hams w/the bone are just the BEST!!!! in the NuWave! I use my NuWave about 4 or 5 times a day, most days. You MUST wash the dome after each use, and we did buy an extra dome for the really grease splattering recipes, keeping one of them for making food that doesn't splatter, as the one I keep on the oven, so that it looks nice in the kitchen. Really, I can't wait until tomorrow, when the FlavorWave oven comes. Can't wait to experiment with that one, too. All these posts are going to come to the list one right after the other, as they are collecting in my outbox, while Mike is hard at work on the other computer. I am so hungry for ham 'n' bean soup now!!!! I should have picked up some Northern Beans, when we were at Darankamp's. I better learn how to spell that, if I'm going to shop there :o) Anyone know the correct spelling of that store? Have to email my cousins, now. I'll be back Monday. I know, I said that before. This list is just contageous! Hugs for the weekend. :o) Lynn Tracy wrote: Lynn, We use Great Northern beans. I have no clue what the difference is or would be. I don't know if I have ever had navy beans? The bean soup was delish!! I had to use evaporated milk for the cornbread as I was all out of regular milk. The cornbread has a "funny" taste, not bad as I still ate it, just different. Don't know if it was the evap milk or maybe my eggs were old. Chili always upset my tummy so I stopped eating it 25 years ago. I told Bryan I'd make it for him as he really likes chili but he said he'd do it himself and he wants to use deer meat. I'm thinking about trying chicken, potatoes, corn and maybe noodles or gnocchi in the crock pot next. I was wondering how heavy cream would work to thicken the broth? I've been watching way too much Food Network channel.!! The Elias Brothers/Big Boy in Gaylord, MI makes the best multi-grain pancakes. I just can't remember what all they put in the batter. I know the rolled oats and nuts but I just never can remember the other thing/things. That's what I get for breakfast, without the blueberries and strawberries and honey-something butter. Bryan got home from work last night and was going to build a fire but broke his axe handle while splitting a few logs. I told him I would turn the heat up, as I was frozen and had been all day and just couldn't seem to warm up. I think I may be coming down with a bug. He just grabbed another blanket. We ate a good, hot dinner and both fell asleep around 8pm. I zoned in and out until 1215am and then woke up toasty warm and ready to watch tv. 78* in the house is way too hot for me! My dad use to keep the house about 68* when we were growing up. "Put a jacket on!" was his favorite saying. Now he has the house at 78* and sits there freezing under his blanket. While living alone, and not having much money, I got use to Ohio winters with the heat at 60* and all unnecessary rooms closed off. I just had blankets, and an electric heater for the bathroom and shower time. I want to get a programmable thermostat. So Lynn, you like the NuWave? I always wondered how they worked. Think I would much rather have glass than plastic too.

    3. Thanks, Brenda, for all the mock recipes!!! I don't know if any are the one that is in the MOCK section of THE MANUAL, but will check at another time. Don't remember doing this much with the recipe I have in there; but, I could be remembering wrong. The one sounds really good. Hmmmm, maybe I'll add that one to THE MANUAL, someday. If anyone finds a MOCK Cherry Pie, using tomatoes, lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, and I'm not sure of the other ingredients, please send it to the list. I've been looking for mine, and can't find it. I'm sure it is hidden in one of my card files, or handwritten books, thought I had them all together, but I didn't. It was one of those recipes to use up tomatoes, when you have way too many from your garden, rather than frying them all. It used red tomatoes. It's from about 18 or 19 years ago. Thanks! Hugs from Columbia! :o) Lynn PS Did the folks, who were having a hard time opening the Word Documents, get them open? Hope so. Don't know what else to do, if you can't open them. Brenda submitted all these great Mock recipes, along with their URLs.

    3. Has anyone made brown gravy by browning [I use a cast iron skillet and stir till brown] the flour 1 cup to 2 quarts then adding to the left over liquid after cooking a roast. I like pork roast best. After gravy thicken I strip the roast into mouth size bites and stir it into gravy. This is good over toasted bread or biscuits. Add vegetables to side. You can also cook roast and vegetables [Potatoes, carrots, celery, broccoli, onion, peas, green beans, corn, any veg that you like] Cook roast till almost done add cut vegetables and cook till done. Separate roast and vegetables from liquid. Brown flour in a cast iron skillet. Add brown flour1 cup to 2 quarts liquid and cook till thickened then you can cut roast in bite size pieces.Add roast and vegetables to thicken liquid.

    1. Re: [PD-LIFE] Cheese Soup
    2. Lynn- I don't know. I never actually drink a glass of milk and I can still eat a cup of yogurt with no problem (but I'm told that yogurt doesn't contain much lactose and many intolerant people can eat yogurt). Cheese has always caused some digestive upset but I just always thought everyone had that--didn't attribute it to lactose intolerance. I must have always been intolerant since I don't have the gene that controls the processing of lactose. It's amazing to have the genome mapped -- genes don't lie and they tell you a LOT about yourself and explain things that were previously mysteries. It tells you about your ancient ancestry (deep origins) and explains your risk for various genetic diseases (the ones that are known as of now--and new ones are added as they learn about them). They also tell you carrier status for various genetic diseases and traits: such as your odds of being brown eyed/green eyed/blue eyed, etc. It's FUN and can be of benefit in health issues both in helping to explain them and also to help you possibly avoid getting them if you are high risk. (Learning that information isn't for the faint of heart though--some wouldn't want to know their genetic risk of getting MS or Parkinson's for example). Most diseases have both a genetic and environmental cause--so learning risks isn't a diagnosis but still can be very interesting. Joan In a message dated 1/16/2009 6:02:42 P.M. Guess I could make my own, but it's so easier to use the canned !!! :o) Lynn PS Going to make coffee, now. Mike is starting his work. Gotta get off. Tracy wrote: The can biscuit recipe? Those sound fun to make this weekend and have with hot cocoa. Yummy! Nice and warm for this cool weather. -tracy --- On Thu, 1/15/09, Lynn wrote: I remember that donuts recipe Tracy gave to us between 2005 and 2007! That is such a great idea, also.

    3. Yep, that's the way most people feel, Connie. But, Mike siad the same thing Joan said, that VISTA is not going away, just having an update called Windows 7, that doesn't amount to much more than better graphics, or something like that. He wishes it would be an update to make it faster, instead. These changes drive people nuts, who work on the technical end of the computer. It's probably fine for some folks who are just users of the product, except that when it changes, it usually means that they will have to upgrade again and again_a vicious cycle. But, we are a people of constant change, for the better or for the worst :o) I just can't see changing a good product, for no reason, or not much of a reason. It IS GREAT reoccurring revenue, I guess. We have a cousin who LOVES Vista, also. So there are people who do like it, but I don't know many. For the rest, well, it's just another operating system to learn and adapt what you have to it. Just like the changing of the DVDs, where Blue Ray won the battle. UGH!!!!!!!! Oh well. Oh, I'll be doing the sending of THE MANUAL tomorrow, or Sunday. Mike decided to work tonight instead of tomorrow. Signing off for the night. Stay warm everyone in those frigid areas of the world!!!! Warm Hugs from Columbia! Gotta run! Hmmm, that would keep me warm, running :o) Lynn PS Joan, did we ever decided on the best cheese soup? Remember that a few years ago! Boy, would a bowl of cheese soup taste great about now! PPS We found a grocery store about 16 minutes away from our house, in Mt. Joy, where it doesn't stink_you can actually smell the foods, and it isn't too much more expensive than Redners was!!!! AND, it has some of the things that I could only get at Redners_so I am a happy camper now! It's a SurFine (sp?) store, which is what Mussers is_Mussers is the store taking over where our Redners was_so, I am hoping that I can take the new store moving in. If I can't, we can hop over Chiques (on 441) to Darankamps (on 230) (sp?). I really like the store! Seems to have very friendly people working there, also. 3. we hit about 35 below in Enosburg, 8 miles from the Canadian border, at least it was about 28 below at 8:30 A.M. so figured it was much lower at early morning. Warmed right up there to zero before noon, now it is cold again but warm enough to snow a bit.
