    3. Pat, This sounds delish!!!! Where do you buy your whole grain mustard? Hugs, Mary -----Original Message----- From: padutch-life-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:padutch-life-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of P Dyer Sent: Thursday, October 22, 2009 10:22 AM To: padutch-life@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PD-LIFE] Hello Cathy, Here is my answer to getting enough veggies. 1 cube a tomato, a cucumber, several B&B pickles & small zucchini 2 cut broccoli and cauliflower in small pieces (about 3 cups) 3 thinly slice several carrots,a green pepper and a red pepper 4 thinly slice a red onion 5 Mix all this together 6 Let stand a bit while you make dressing Dressing 1 1/2 cup Miracle Whip or Mayo 2 some pickle juice 3 1/4 cup whole grain mustard 4 Mix together and pour over veggies and stir until all veggies are coated No Salt Maybe a bit of coarsely ground pepper. Yum, Yum! I make a huge bowl of this veggie salad every week. It is terrific! I change the flavor by using different pickles and their juice. 2. Hi, Pat. I hope the disposal is as promised because there was a horror story out last year about this being just an advertisement to get people back in the stores and the bulbs were being dumped in land fills. I hope this is not so. Glad they are working for you. Not me. Connie -----Original Message----- From: P Dyer <pdyer53@yahoo.com> To: padutch-life@rootsweb.com Sent: Thu, Oct 22, 2009 12:05 pm Subject: Re: [PD-LIFE] New type light bulbs Mary, So sorry you can't use the new bulbs. I think they are the cat's pajamas. I bought mine on sale at Lowes over two years ago. All are still burning brightly. The glass bulb is very sturdy. I*'m not worried about mercury poisoning. Disposal may be a problem but Lowes, Home Depot and I think Walmart will dispose of them for free. 1. Re: [PD-LIFE] New type light bulbs
    2. I think it is ironic with all the concern about the environment and changing the thermometers, these bulbs would be pushed for consumption. You can not throw them out as they impact the landfills and could then leach into our water. WooHoo. Who had their thumb up their butt for this one? Oh, BTW, in our area they are produced in China. Sorry, I use USA products. We save $$ by turning off the lights when we leave a room. I also have a problem with the lights as I worked for years under them at night. Soon found I had severe eye strain from the yellow light caste by them. My eyes would tear up when ever I tried to read or write with them as my source of light. Common sense needs to be applied and we save $$ many other ways, Extremely frugal. PA Dutch way of life. Right??? I have heard of many with issues about these. 1. Re: [PD-LIFE] New type light bulbs
    2. Since I mostly use recessed lights on dimmer switches I can't use them. Most of them don't work with dimmer switches and the ones that do are extremely expensive and not very reliable. Also, if you break one there is a dangerous gas that escapes and they warn you to leave the room for an hour or so. That makes me uncomfortable even if I could use them. I do use energy-saving LCD lights for my Christmas lights. They have a different look to them but I like them ok. Joan In a message dated 10/22/2009 11:48:11 A.M. 3. Well, my husband has changed some of the bulbs. We have all differnt ones in the trailer, but thanks for the tip. What we need is a new tree planted perhaps to help with the heating on the one side, but wouldn't help us, but maybe the next generation, though our kids, may evenutally own our place in the future! We still own our little part of FL paradise! Thanks allot, Pat. 3. My dad died in 1992, Tracy, but we still miss him, that's all! I still look back at the beauty of the falll colors for the funeral, I celebrated the fact i was back then. And sharing with my mother & two sisters, I just plan on going back eventually, if my husband should die before myself! Though got plenty of time to change my mind too! The future will take care of itself! Though my kids will be in school next year, so gotta get into something by then, to get busy with a job! I've raised kids, & don't have a major in mind to get out there & find something! I guess I do have "managing skills". And been told I have a natural ability to boss people around, so maybe something could be made of those skills, I guess! Weather is supposed to be nice, in the 70's at night, & maybe near 90 by the time of the weekend. Maybe we'll get the canoe, on the truck & go to one of the places you can hike, & CANOE, & COOK OUT! Sounds like it could be a plan, since it's going to be warm, but the "heat" not so much! Bearable! The sun actually feels great now, this time of year! By the way, we had windows put into our trailer, & WOW, you could feel the warmth, which will be good this summer, when the heat is outside, & we're trying to stay cooler! Can't wait to see the electric bills if they go down any! We'll probably be AMAZED! Is anyone planning to come to FL, this year?! 3. I know how important bring vigilant with vegies. My youngest is almost 5 & he doesn't eat enough vegies, & trying to get him to keep up with trying new things! And been insisting on him trying new things, & plus to quit insisting on eating other than what the rest of us are eating too! Ya know! We don't enough cabbage, & know fiber is there so wanted to ask. My husband i think likes red cabbage versus the greeen so wanted to check when I say it! My curiousity was piqued, may I say! We've been trying to lose weight at my home too, which I'm getting to the point where I'm experimenting with more vegies for everyone's sake! I'll let you know. Looks really good! I found a recipe called "Cabbage & dill" I've tried it a number of times, real easy, has cabbage, onions, bacon & spices, salt, pepper & dill basically & only cooks maybe 45-1 hour & it's hot & ready to eat, & quite good. Living in FL, I want something to fiz, different as the warmer weather isn't as hot here, something hot, for a change, because you gotta eat! I'm used to eating hot things, though I've been here since 1987, & asjusted my cooking, but used to eating hot things, but with the hear in the kitchen heats up the kitchen if I cook too much! This way I can cook, open the windows, & let the smells out with the weather. We're supposed to be having warm weather now over the weekend, near 90! Again! I hear you guys are getting colder weather? What state you in? 3. Mary, So sorry you can't use the new bulbs. 1. [PD-LIFE] Vegies
    2. Don Churchfield
    3. I eat a lot of vegetables. I prefer using fresh veggies, that way you don't get any of the preservatives and stuff that you find in canned foods. I also prefer the taste of fresh ones over frozen veggies. Stir fry vegetables are good. I use brown rice as it is supposed to be healthier. After I cook the rice (I don't use instant rice) I rinse it and that takes some of the extra starch off it. I usually use peppers, onions, corn, green beans and carrots in the stir fry, and like chicken in it also. We use only the skinless, boneless chicken breasts as the white meat is much lower in cholesterol than the dark meat. When the stir fry is just about done I add soy sauce, stir it around until everything is coated, and then cook it for a couple more minutes until the sauce cooks down. Go easy on the sauce, though, as it can be over-powering and too strong if you use too much. I also eat a lot of Brussels sprouts, cauliflower and broccoli which are all good sources of fiber. I also make Spanish rice and fix stuffed bell peppers. I do use ground beef in the Spanish rice, but get the leanest ground beef or ground chuck I can find. Some day I want to get a meat grinder and start grinding my own, that way I can control the fat more. We are not vegetarians, but we buy the leanest cuts of meat we can, and then I trim as much fat off the meat as possible. I grill most of our meats so much of the fat that is marbled in the meat drips out of it. Some people like the taste of the ft cooking into the meat, but we have learned to like it just as well with the fat trimmed off, and it is healthier that way, especially if you have a cholesterol problem as both my wife and I do. I don't use salt because of a fluid retention problem, and salt causes fluid retention in people with that problem. My wife doesn't have that problem, so she seasons her food with salt after it is cooked. I also season beef with onion powder and garlic powder, which is healthier than prepared seasonings. I also prefer fresh ground black pepper than ground pepper as it is more flavorful. I try to have vegetables for lunch every day without meats. Sometimes I have cooked vegetables, sometimes a tossed salad. I also eat grain cereals for breakfast most of the time. I do not use the pre-sweetened cereals. I am diabetic so I use Splenda, but do not recommend that unless you need to use it. I drink diet soda's, but the nutritionist tells me that the artificial sweeteners can cause weight gain, so I limit how much I drink. I have read that artificial sweeteners also cause excess gas. Well, enough for now. Happy eating. Don in AZ

    3. Cathy, Here is my answer to getting enough veggies. 1. [PD-LIFE] Hello & Facebook
    2. Hi All!   My sympathies to all who have lost their love ones recently.   I have found so many old classmates, family, friends & genealogy buddies on Facebook. There are several genealogy pages on Facebook as well.Just write something in the Search box & see what comes up.I REALLY enjoy it a bunch!   I must admit I got hooked on the farm & ranch apps.I now have 6 farms & 2 ranches. I can't do anymore though & still devote time to genealogy. LOL!   Pam in IN.

    2. I have a lot of fun playing Mafia Wars and Wordscraper (my two vices of the Facebook "apps"). You can't take the genealogist out of me though...I've found a couple cousins among the mafia wars players. LOL! Joan In a message dated 10/21/2009 9:02:06 P.M.
