    1. Re: [PD-LIFE] Self-threading needles
    2. I think we are talking 2 different methods here. There are needles with an open end that the thread slips into the notch. That one, of course is open. To thread a close ended needle, the wire loop works. Those can be gotten in the catalogs that come in the mail. You know, those notion ones, like Miles Kimball and such. Odds and ends where you can find all sorts of stuff. My grandmother had a thimble with the wire loop in a slide attachment. 2. There are aids out there to help with the needle threading. Even magnifying glasses attached to the needle holder. I am hoping to teach myself how to tat. That is the old way of making lace besides crocheting. I have the kit so now need the time. Hold on to those precious memories and remember the good times you had together. I served from 1964 to 1984, and, of course, that was during the Viet Nam era. Even though I did not go to Viet Nam myself, I did volunteer to go but there was a shortage in my specialty in Europe and in the states, and there was not a shortage in Viet Nam. Still I endured some of the hate and so on that military members went through, and that was not good. Being the Chaplain for the local Disabled American Veterans chapter, I deal a lot with veterans of that time period, and some of the hardships they endure to this day are terrible. Although I never went into declared combat, I did go to areas a week out of every month for about two years where we were shot at every day by the Communist Chinese, but we could not shoot back Recently there was a SWAT raid just across the street from us and shots fired, and I had a difficult time with that. We did not suffer any problems from it other than not being allowed outside the house, but it brought back some painful memories. Quite often I wear a hat that has something to do with the Army or DAV. I also at times wear my Army retired pin. It is not uncommon for a total stranger to stop me and other veterans, give us a hug, and thank us for serving. We have several veterans in the church, and when we pledge allegiance to the flag I encourage them to render the hand salute, which veterans have been given permission by Congress to do. There is a sense of pride when we do that, and it brings tears to my eyes. I am proud to have served our country and very proud to be an American! As for being a pack rat, I think I am the same way. When we get too many plastic containers around the house we take them to the church for the kitchen. When we have pot luck dinners, which is the fourth Sunday of every month, we give containers to people who would like to take some leftovers home with them. We always have plenty of them for people to use, and they don't need to bring them back unless they want to. 3. WOW, Judy. I still have my Grandma's button box. Lots of nice stuff in there. Over the years I added to it and still to this day save buttons. My mother did the same thing with zippers and hooks and eyes. I remember cutting hooks and eyes off old braziers to replace worn out ones or make extensions if there was a weight gain. My husband gets on me every once in a while to throw containers out because I save oleo tubs and Reeser's salad tubs until they are coming out of my ears to the point where they don't fit on the shelf any more. I used to save Styrofoam trays, too. I'd clean them with soap and water, then use them to repackage large purchases of meat. I guess that's why I am a packrat. I was raised at a time when we hardly ever threw anything out because some one else might have need of it; it they did, we'd have it. Those were the good old days. Thanks for the memories. 2. Made me giggle reading all of this. I have jars and jars of old buttons, along with hook and eyes, old zippers and the like. Even the lace was cut off of underwear that was the fashion in the 20's and 30's even in the less expensive ones. Anyone want some buttons??? My eyesight is sure worse since I started my job that uses only fluorescent bulbs. They are very bad for the eyes, skin and lungs. Remember Grandma's button box? I'd sure love to get ahold of it now. What fun we had sifting through her buttons. Most of them had been used on clothes, probably things purchased at the thrift store. In one of her old diaries she said she bought the boys coats for 35 cents at a second-hand shop. This was in the mid-1930s. I'm pretty sure it was the Salvation Army. Not sure when they started. She also ripped out zippers from discarded clothing to reuse. Grandma also saved "oleo" tubs and styrofoam trays that fruit used to come on. 3. the one thing I've never understood is how service persons can be blamed for the conflict they were sent into. I try to make sure I thank folks who have served--there is no preparation out there to fully help folks manage what they experience in war. what I do want is that ALL service personnel come home in one piece, mentally and physically. So many cannot say that they have---which is what saddens me so much. Kathy---I do understand only too well---no matter how long a life someone has lived, or how expected their passing is, it is hard to say goodbye. Keep those memories with you---her clothes, how she wore them, took care of them, how you gave away some of your mom's things to help others---remember them, often.
