    3. Hi . . . Does anyone have a web-site that explains old job descriptions? I would like to know what a "Carter" was. My guess is someone who dealt with clothing but . . . would he have been a Tailor? or just a salesman. This would have been during the 1780's. My husband thinks that he would have worked with wool . . . carding wool. Would he have made wool clothing? possibly raised sheep? Any ideas will be helpful. Thank you .. . . 3. Here's what I found on Wikipedia under "carter": *Carter* is a common English name and can be a given name or surname. The name is derived from the occupation *carter*, a person who carries things in a cart. It is also used to refer to someone who is lucky at cards but unlucky in love. I have three Isaiah Worrells in my Worrall database, one who died in February 1817 and married to Martha Roberts, one b. 1828, d. 1884, married to Susanna Latch, and one b.c. 1874 (son of Isaiah and Susanna) on whom I have no other information. I believe a carter was someone who used a cart to move goods or any other moveables. It wasn't an occupation necessarily tied to the clothing trade; in fact it probably wasn't more often than not. Nightmen (the lucky fellows who cleaned out the latrine) were called carter. A carder was an individual who carded wool or cotton either by hand or mechanically in a textile manufactory. 3. A carter is someone who hauls goods or other items with a cart, usually horse or mule drawn. The are also called draymen, a dray being an animal drawn cart or wagon.
