In an aside email to another member on the list I mentioned having some pages of a "Diary of Upland Public Grammar School" by A. Williams, Instructor. The list member suggested putting it out to the group, so I will do so, but please be patient. The 11 pages of the diary I have will take me some time to reproduce and provide to you. First some background - I found this diary in 2006 at the old DCHS in Broomall. From what I can remember it was in a binder. For those of you who live in the Delaware County area you will probably want to see the diary in its complete form. The DCHS is now in Chester at the 'old bank' building. Second after finding the diary I went to the school which still stands (it is next to the Caleb Pusey House) in Upland. I was fortunate enough to talk to the Docent at the Pusey house, who gave me a tour of the school house. According to her, the school was started by Crozier, who built a textile mill in Upland. He started the school for the children of his mill workers. The school was only in existence for a few years because the number of children who wanted to attend grew too large for that location. My ancestor, whose sons attended the school, was a stone mason. This surprised the Docent because he didn't work in the mill. My thought was the mill had to be built by someone and maybe the offer to educate children was extended to these workers also. Third, every page is double numbered. Typewritten Page 1 has the page number 111 in the upper right hand corner. Unfortunately I can not recall why, nor did I take notes on this. Maybe another member of the list can enlighten us. Below is page 1 of the 11 pages I copied------- Page 1 (handwritten 111 in upper right corner) "Copy of Essential Data from Diary on School Roster, of Upland Public Grammar School, 1853-1856, A.
