Need information Order of Red Men , Mecopanacka Tribe # 266. My grandfather was a member of it in early 1900's, around 1917. I have many of his Red Men things including a group photo taken at a convention in Scranton in 1917. Any information would be appreciated. Also ,was there ever a cemetary in Ridley Park and where was it located? Thanks. Dave Steckel,Wenonah,NJ
I have this note in my records regarding one of my kin in the States. Hope it helps. I obtained the info from our old friend Google.com The contents of this paper consist of an eulogy and a tribute to one whom he described as "..my deceased friend and Great Chief..". This address had been given by William J. Cain to the Brothers of the Improved Order of Red Men. This Order is based on the lines of the American Indian tribes. At the end of this record is the note - "Delivered by Wm. J. Cain, Past Great Sachem, Penn(sylvania) Imp(roved) Order of Red Men". The Improved Order of Red Men is America's oldest fraternal organisation, is Chartered by Congress and is "..devoted to inspiring a greater love for the United States of America and the principles of American liberty..". It supports various charitable, youth and educational programs and has a women's auxiliary known as the Degree of Pocahontas.
