I am looking for the graves of my ggggrandfather, Seth Thomas, and his wife, Prudence Edwards Thomas. Seth lived in the Media/Nether Providence area most of his life. He was not a Quaker. (His wife, Prudence Edwards, was disowned for marrying out of the church.) The family was probably Anglican to begin with; they ended up being Methodists. He is listed in some records I have as being a "gentleman." Seth died in 1827, his will is on file in DelCo.; his house was the "Seth Thomas house" at 8 S. Providence Road. His son, Seth C. Thomas, who was a county coroner, is buried in the Old Union Methodist Church cemetery in the Nether Providence area. I have been to the Media Cemetery, he is not buried there. The records on the DelCo GenWeb site are not complete, I can't find him in the records that are there. I figure I am going to have to go cemetery hopping, but I would like to know what cemeteries were in operation in 1827 that are in the Media/Nether P/Wallingford areas, and where they are located. I don't live close by, so I would like to make sure I am not driving all over in the wrong directions. :) Obviously he could have been buried on the Providence Road property, but knowing my family, they would have wanted to be buried at church with a headstone....so everyone would stop and visit... ;) I'm sure he's around somewhere. Trust me, the Thomas egos haven't changed in 175+ years....lol.....I could tell you stories..... Thanks in advance for any help!!!! Lynn

Hi List! I'm wondering if there is a news paper clippings available yet at the DCHS? I need to find an obit for Anna Carroll as the cemetery did not have a death date only a burial date and although we could possibly quess the date to be within a few days prior to the burial. A Great uncle of mine needs more to go on since he is taking it upon himself to put a Tomb Stone on our Ancestor's grave that we found does not have one. Therefore any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Esther. Anna M. Carroll Born:1885, Ireland Arrived: 1906, S.S. Haverford Resided: 226 Clifton Heights, Pa. Died:? This article is fromThe Chester Daily Times (Chester, PA) May 29, 1880 "ALMOST DROWNED - Yesterday evening, a boy about twelve years of age, named John Ferrigan, who lives on Concord Avenue, was in the creek at Gartside's wharf, bathing, and being in the water an hour, he took the cramps and would have drowned, only for the timely aid of a young man named Edward Smith, who jumped in and saved him."

Good morning Karen, The following suggestions may help you. :) To find an obit & more newspaper articles on this event you would go to the Delaware County Historical Society, in Chester, PA. Search "The Chester Times" newspaper, around the date of the murder, the newspaper is on micro film. :) To find the court records regarding Wm FRIEL's murder you would go to the Delaware County Archives, in Lima. I do not think you will find any police records. Have you looked for Wm's first wife's name in the 1900 census? If she didn't d. before then. It may also be mentioned in his obit. Have you found the cemetery where Wm is buried? On the gravestone(s) you might be able to find the date of deaths of both wives. I will send you an outline on doing genealogy research in Delaware Co., PA. Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS) P.S. If anyone else wants a copy of this research outline for Delaware Co., PA -- please e-mail me off list. :) In a message dated 8/13/07 1:35:45 AM, Kskm212 writes: > > Hi. Maybe I am missing something that you may see that I do not. Here is my brief summary. John Ferrigan arrived in the Port of Philadelphia in 1844 according to his naturalization papers. If you look at the 1850 census for a John Ferrigan(17) I can not find him in Pennsylvania. Although, a Patrick Ferrigan sponsored John Ferrigan for his US citizenship. I can find both men in the 1860 Census but not in the 1870 census. Maybe someone can help me figure this out. Have spent so much time looking. Not sure on name variations, although someone have suggested "ferigan" with one "r". Maybe your experience could help. ------------------------- CENSUS DATA FOR 1860 Below. Hi list, A friend sent me the following -- I don't think it has been posted as yet! :D http://www.loc.gov/chroniclingamerica/ Hi Helen, Here is a website that might be of interest to you and your list of genealogy researchers, if you don't already have it. It's from the Library of Congress and it has a search engine for some newspapers from the years: 1900 to 1910 from the following states: California, District of Columbia, Florida, Kentucky, New York, Utah, and Virginia. It's free too! (Left hand column.) Although, I didn't find anyone (but then again, I don't have family in those states), a friend of mine did and found it to be really helpful. ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour
Hi Dori, Chester Hospital is in the city of Chester in Delaware Co., PA but what county did he die in? Could it have been Chester Co.? Gail was great in finding the info below & it mentions Irvin RAFF was b. in Cape May -- now is that Cape May Co.? He died in Chester -- now is that Chester Co.? If you send for a death certificate & give the correct date but the WRONG county they will not be able to find the death certificate. Was there a West Chester Hospital in West Chester? What about a hospital in Wilmington, DE? Of course, search for a will or administration & from it you will get the date of Irvin's death. Search these cemetery websites & you might be able to find out where he is buried: Cemetery Records | Find A Grave** - Millions http://www.findagrave.com/ Cemetery Records & Online Memorials Find a grave http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gsr&GSfn=&GSmn=&GSln=FOUSE& GSbyrel=all&GSby=&GSdyrel=all&GSdy=&GSst=40&GSob=n Cemetery -The Association for Gravestone Studies - Home http://www.gravestonestudies.org/ Cemetery *The USGenWeb Tombstone Transcription Project http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Ecemetery/ I don't know if all this helps but I thought I would mention it. Irvin Raff Born: Cape May, [county], New Jersey, USA Died: Chester, [county], Pennsylvania, USA I suggest you tell your cousin that, rather than repeated asking for a lookup for the same year, he/she try instead asking for other years like 1936, 1938, 1939, since a child's memory is quite often cloudy. If a record existed for 1937, it would have been found by now. Hi list, I'm just passing this info on to you as requested! :) Happy hunting, Helen In the last few weeks, the Pennsylvania Archives has added some remarkable free online resources to the already-available Warrant Registers at: http://www.phmc.state.pa.us/bah/dam/landrec.htm "Scanned Land Records" These pages include instructions on how to search the records, and an abbreviated history behind the early process of recording the land transactions. I've been ordering these survey maps from the Archives for seven years for mapping purposes and it is truly a wonderful addition to online research to be able to avoid the cost and time of waiting for search results and photocopies of survey maps, warrants, and patents to arrive by snail mail. In addition, the Archives may, in the near future, accept volunteer help in transcribing the already easy-to-read records so in the future a database can be searched rather than having to review page-by-page hundreds (likely thousands) of pages. Possibly RootsWeb could help the Archives to organize this effort. Specifically the resources are: Warrant Registers Patent Indexes Copied Survey Books Patent Tract Name Index East Side Applications (Register) West Side Applications (Register) New Purchase Register Please pass on as I am only e-mailed the Pennsylvania lists pertaining to my research!
