Hi One & All, Yesterday, 22 Oct 2002, Ginny DeNENNO & I went to St. Martin's Cemetery to recover metal gravemarkers, which had been removed from graves & were thrown behind a large tree over the years. I asked & received permission from Bruce DORBIAN, Marcus Hook borough manager & director of the Marcus Hook Community Development Corporation. I, also, asked for the rod iron gate from the PHILLIPS burial plot. This gate was torn from the fence & on the ground when I found it 2 years ago. Rev. David RIBEIRO, pastor of the congregation, now in "Old St. Martin's Church" was kind enough to store the gate for us. These items were given to the "new" museum of the Delaware County Historical Society. The metal gravemarkers could not be replaced on the graves because of their condition & no one knows were the graves are today. The following is a list of the items retrieved & some new info that is not in either of the surveys done, in the past, on St. Martin's Cemetery: Name: Date & other info, Foundry named on the back if any: of the metal gravemarkers: 1. Harry E. BAYNARD -- Wm ADAMS Foundry Co. 960 N. 9th St. Phila. 2. Lewis O. DAVIS -- " " " " 3. J. Arthur FOSTER d. 21 Sep 1900 " " " " Age 20 years 4. J. Newton FOSTER -- " " " " 5. Good morning list, In the past, I mentioned the SOUTHERY-SUDDERY Log House Dr. Mead SHAFFER just recently rebuilt on his property in Bethel Twp., PA. Last month, I asked Doc if he would consider hosting a reunion for the descendants of Robert SOUTHERY-SUDDERY & yesterday he gave me the go ahead. He hopes to have the reunion this spring, 2003. If anyone is a descendant of Robert SOUTHERY-SUDDERY & is interested in attending this reunion please e-mail me. I'm compiling an e-mail list. First come, first served, just incase we have to many responses. At some point I'm sure there will be a cut off, sorry to say. I would be very interested in knowing your direct lineage to Robert SOUTHERY-SUDDERY. For those of you who are not familiar with Doc SHAFFER's Saturday night dinner parties -- they are "the talk of the town." It is consider an "historic moment" to be invited to Doc SHAFFER's House -- a true walk back in time. The aroma of baking bread, in 18th century ovens, the smells of something roasting on an open fireplaces. Gee, is this Christmas Eve 200 years ago???? I'm sure the SOUTHERY-SUDDERY Reunion will be something you will treasure, in your memory, for a long time to come. :) Happy hunting, Helen (DCHS)
I went to the courthouse last week and the let me look at the naturalization books and were very nice about it. I have to go back and look thru again I couldnt find my relative in the books but I know hes there. Good luck Jacki
I am curious about how many descendents of the John PALMER who married Mary SUDDERY/SOUTHERY and settled in Concord Twp., [now] Delaware County, PA are on each of these lists. I'd like to ascertain the practicality of updating the genealogy of the descendants of John Palmer compiled by Lewis Palmer and published in 1910. I'm particularly curious to know if any other descendents of Lewis Palmer (b. 1837, m. Hannah H. PANCOAST) are lurking out there so as to determine the feasibility of updating that portion of the genealogy. Children of Lewis and Hannah (Pancoast) Palmer (all born in Concord, Delaware Co., PA) were: 1. Charles Palmer - b. 1863, m. Arletta CUTLER 2. Joseph Pancoast Palmer - b. 1866, m. Margaret GRUBB 3. Mary Darlington Palmer - b. 1868 (no issue) 4. Anna T. Palmer - b. 1869 (no issue) 5. Edwin Lewis Palmer - b. 1871, m. Anna Dora FRENCH 6. Samuel C. Palmer - b. 1874, m. Margaret Bancroft SWAYNE If you'd contact me [off-list] and indicate which list(s) you're on and how you're descended, I'd appreciate it. TIA! Hello List, Just wondering if anyone has had the opportunity to research the Naturalization and Application records that were recently recovered at the Delaware County Courthouse? I live out of state and plan to visit for Christmas and was wanting to go by the courthouse and research these records. Are they readily available to the public? Last time I went there, only one person in the passport office had access and they would not allow anyone to look at the records themselves. I hear things have changed thanks to some campaigning by local researchers, so I'm hoping to be able to look at them myself this time, especially the applications. Any feedback or suggestions? Thanks, Dana

I've seen a few mentions of the Red Men this morning and thought I'd add an obit of a former member. Maybe some of you recognize the names of the pall bearers who were Red Men. ----------------------------------- Chester Times Thursday 11 April, 1901 pg. 5 TENDERLY LAID TO REST Eloquent Encomiums Spoken Over the Body of Harman J. Van Riper. The funeral of Herman J. Van Riper took place yesterday at Trainer from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. V.C. Worrilow, with whom he had been residing for some time past. A brief service was held at the house before proceeding to the Trainer M.E. Church. Rev. A.D. Geist had charge of the service and preached the sermon speaking very beautifully of the life of the departed. Rev. C.W.W. Bishop, pastor of the Marcus Hook Baptist church, and Rev. F.C. Woods, pastor of the Upland Baptist church assisted in the services and spoke of the worth of the deceased. A number of selections were sung by Rev. and Mrs. A. Geist. The cortege proceeded to Chester Rural Cemetery, where interment was made. The Red Men, of which deceased was a member, having charge of the services at the grave. The floral tributes were very beautiful consisting of a bouquet of 83 carnations, pillow with "Father" on it. Palm leaves with "Husband" on them and a star and crescent. The pall bearers were; Jas. T. Gill, George M. Gilbert, William McVey, Timothy C. Lane, James Johnson and William Klee.
I have this note in my records regarding one of my kin in the States. Hope it helps. I obtained the info from our old friend Google.com The contents of this paper consist of an eulogy and a tribute to one whom he described as "..my deceased friend and Great Chief..". This address had been given by William J. Cain to the Brothers of the Improved Order of Red Men. This Order is based on the lines of the American Indian tribes. At the end of this record is the note - "Delivered by Wm. J. Cain, Past Great Sachem, Penn(sylvania) Imp(roved) Order of Red Men". The Improved Order of Red Men is America's oldest fraternal organisation, is Chartered by Congress and is "..devoted to inspiring a greater love for the United States of America and the principles of American liberty..". It supports various charitable, youth and educational programs and has a women's auxiliary known as the Degree of Pocahontas.
My grandfather was a member of the Red Men also. He went to meetings and held office in Bryn Mawr. Please share any info you get with me? I dont' remember much about it...just vague memories of going there with him on Sundays and wondering what the meaning was. I'd love to know more Thanks, Donna

Your date of death seems to coincide with the date of death I have. May you please tell me if you have anything else on him or his wife Lydia Keyser Cobourn, also buried in St. Martin's Cemetery. I have her death as January 28, 1863. No one in the family, including my 92 year old grandfather knows about her parents or Joseph's. Did Joseph really serve in the Revolutionary War??? No one ever mentioned it but we don't have anything on him. I live in Limerick, Pa, and am trying to come down to see the grave sites where my Grandancestors are buried. Would I be able to get pictures and any other information about either of them. I am soo excited! Thank you so much for taking the time to read this e-mail. Jeff, Here's what Ashmead wrote in his 1884 "History of Delaware County:" "Maplewood Institute. - A large tract of land, near Friends' meeting-house, at Concordville, was purchased by Professor Joseph Shortledge, who erected thereon a building fifty by eighty feet, three stories in height, especially designed for a seminary of learning. In the fall of 1862 he established a school, which was conducted successfully, both sexes being admitted as pupils. The academy was well patronized, and soon won its way in public favor. On April 6, 1870, it was chartered by an Act of Assembly, as the "Maplewood Institute," with collegiate privileges. Shortly after this date the building was enlarged by the addition of a wing to the rear, forty by eighty feet, affording facilities which were much needed. The institute at the present time [1884] has accommodations for eighty pupils, a well-selected library, and is also well supplied with chemical and philosophical apparatus." There's additional info in the Concord Township history books available from their Historical Society: http://www.twp.concord.pa.us/hist_soc.htm Best wishes, Rick At 04:49 PM 10/15/02 -0400, Jeff Palmer wrote: >I'm preparing a genealogical bio for my great grandfather, Charles PALMER, >b. 1863 in Concord Twp., d. 1966.
