    1. Re: PADELAWA-D Digest V02 #223
    2. Mark, I have your Prudence Dutton who married Daniel Pyle as the daughter of John Dutton (III) and Rachel Colette. Do you have any information on this branch of your family. John is the son of John Dutton Jr and Prudence Reynolds. I am researching the Reynolds connection. I have information on Reynolds I would be happy to share. I have little actual information on the Duttons except how they are supposed to connect with the Reynolds. I'm trying to identify several Pyles named in a 1794 deed that descended=20 through my wife's family for a plot of land straddling the border of Beth= el=20 Township, Delaware County, PA, and New Castle County, Del. I presume the= se=20 people are somehow related to my wife, but am not sure how. First, here's my wife's line: Robert Pyle (1660-1730) - Ann Stovey Daniel Pyle (1694-1756) - Mary Pennell Robert Pyle (1730-?) - Rebecca Hampton Daniel Pyle (1755-1833) - Prudence Dutton Dutton Pyle (1807-1880) - Margaret Zebley Owen Zebey Pyle (1842-1938) - Anna Mary Wood and so on=E2=80=A6 And I should probably mention that my wife's grandparents' farm - in Beth= el=20 Township, Delaware County - descended to them from the above Daniel Pyle=20 (1755-1833). One intriguing detail is that various members of the Gest family owned th= e=20 farm that descended to my wife's grandparents. My main question is: Who were "Robert Pyle & Susannah his wife"? As you can see, we have a Robert Pyle (b. 1730) who could have been alive= at=20 that time. But his wife was Rebecca, not Susannah - although Susannah co= uld=20 have been a second wife. Pennsylvania Wills, 1682-1834 PYLE, ROBERT. Bethel, yeoman. January 2, 1729/30. August 29, 1730. A. 322. To wife Susanna £100 and 1/2 household goods. To son William £50 and to his children £50 to be divided at 21. 1. Scheme of a Lottery , 1762 -- in Dollars?
    2. Hi Lists, I received the following from another list & asked for permission to post it. I found this very interesting & thought it might be helpful in regard to money being used in this time period: ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, November 24, 2002 8:15 PM Subject: Re: [PACHESTE] SCHEME Of A LOTTERY, 1762 In a message dated 11/23/2002 2:36:03 PM Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: January 14, 1762 The Pennsylvania Gazette > > SCHEME Of A LOTTERY, for raising Fifteen Hundred Dollars, to help to > > finish the New Presbyterian Church, now erecting in the Forks of > > Brandywine. > Wait one. > > I guess I don't understand a 1762 posting that refers to money as dollars'. > > I thought the currency of the realm at that time was pounds ... and shillings ... and pence, etc. > > Can someone explain this ?? > > DICK FOLKERTH > Dallas, Texas Allow me to venture a guess as to what the term dollars might have meant in 1762. As you know, George III was slipping in and out of insanity, and would not allow any mintage of royal coinage. I don't know the exact timing of this, but suffice to say his attitude and the rapid expansion of commerce in the colonies caused a lasting and inconvenient shortage of coinage, even down to farthings, pence, and shillings. One of the more popular coins used was the Spanish Eight Reales, often called a dollar. Eventually, the Bank of England bought a number of these coins from Spain, and stamped a tiny royal bust on the neck of the Spanish king. This lead to the creation of a rhyme: The bank to make its Spanish dollars pass Stamped the head of a fool on the neck of an ass. Notwithstanding the legitimization of the Dollar many of them were used in their "native" state. Actually the Spanish Eight Reales piece was legal tender in the United States until (I think) 1856. Incidentally, the dollar, being of good silver, was cut into "bits"...eight of them, thus "two bits", a quarter, "four bits", half a dollar, if you are old enough to remember the use of those terms. One bit was a "picayune", an eighth of a dollar, and one supposes, the price of a pack of those New Orleans cigarettes called "Picayune"; strong enough to curl your hair! Or perhaps the entire Scheme of a Lottery was a fake! Phil Andrew Lache pas la patat

    2. I would like to know if anyone knows the surname GIRARD. Seems I have been searching for info on these people forever. There would have been a Mary Girard, Joan Girard, and Alice Girard who would have attended Glen-Nor High School in Prospect Park Pa I am guessing between the years of 1945 to 1957. The fathers name was Robert the mother Margaret They had a brother who drowned in the quarry I think at Tinicum about 1956 or so he was only 17. I believe they lived in Glenolden. All three girls would be in thier 60's now. If anyone could offer any help in locating this family I would really appreciate it. Thank you in advance for your help. Renee

    2. Seeking possible leads to MARY PEARSON. The 1880 Census list her as 1 year old, living at 118 E. Fourth Street, Chester City, PA. and the granddaughter of Dr, John M. Allen. The only other reference to her is in an April 20, 1903 newspaper article about the death of Dr. John M. Allen. It states she "faithfully waited on him the night before his death." He died at the same address as above. This indicates to me she was born either late 1878 or early 1879 and would have been 23 or 24 at the time of her grandfather's death. Is it possible any school records exist that may lead me to her birth date or her parents name. I have considerable info on Dr. John Allen, who was my great grandfather. This info includes the birth and death dates of his daughters and his sons. As far as I can determine the sons were the only ones to marry. Is it possible that a son married a widow PEARSON with a daughter. If so she must have died shortly thereafter as the two sons are listed in the 1880 Census as living with their father but no listing of a wife for either.
