Good morning list, I sent the following to someone doing research on a compound surname & I thought it might be helpful to others who may encounter a similar problem: About the surname SCHUMACHER & the variant spellings: SCHUMAKER - SHOEMACHER - SHOEMAKER but does the surname MACHER come to mind? I read a story about a German Soldier in the Civil War, who got very upset with the incorrect spelling of his surname SCHUMACHER! After the war, he went west & married -- using the surname MACHER. After he died & his wife applied for his pension she was told that no one by the name of MACHER served in that regiment! Well, she just knew her husband was in the Civil War! Her husband's brother had come to visit them from back east, a few years ago & they had talked about the war. She remembered where her husband's family lived back east & traced them down -- only to find out her married name was SCHUMACHER -- not MACHER! Moral of the story, you really never know who you marry -- no, no, I'm getting off on the wrong track here. :) Be careful of compound surnames like KLEINSCHMIDT -- will KLEIN or SCHMIDT be used as the surname? Burr EASTWOOD? Now, if you have the given name Burr (which is also a surname) & you have the compound surname EASTWOOD the census takers could really have a field day with this name!!! Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS)

I've been working with microfilmed phone books for Delaware County recently. The Philadelphia Free Library has them back to at least 1930, I believe, and I would hope that Delaware Cty libraries might have earlier ones. I don't know about city directories. Sometime ago I believe I asked for the same question, but dont remember the answer. Perhaps searching the archive for the mailing list might show it. How you would go about getting access to these phonebooks on microfilm I don't know. I don't think the LDS has filmed them. You can try interlibrary loans if this period is of any interest to you. jo ----- Original Message ----- From: "Herb E. Your own security settings are the cause. In Outlook Express, on the top menu bar, click "Tools", then "Options", then click on the "Security" tab. Click to remove the check in the box next to "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus". Then click on "Apply". You may have to close and reopen Outlook Express. It should work fine now. Hello, I have Microsoft Outlook Express for my mail and they will not open your mail with this as the reason "Oulook Express removed access to the following unsafe attachments in your Email". thought you might like to know this. Good morning list, I very curious about this child Williet LAMPLUGH being buried at St. Martin's Cemetery in Marcus Hook, Delaware Co., PA. LAMPLUGH, Williet Son of Edward - Sabier LAMPLUGH Born 25 Dec 1693, Died 19 Apr 1694 Walter MARTIN did not deed the land for the church until 1699. This child is buried there 6 years prior to that date. Was there a cemetery on this land before the church? Did the Finns & Swedes use this as a cemetery before the English? I'm not familiar with the origin of the surname LAMPLUGH -- could anyone give me some background on it? I'm, also, not familiar with the given names Williet & Sabier -- could anyone tell me there origin? On a map -- Settlements on the 1638 Delaware River Valley Map of the Colony of New Sweden -- what today is "Marcus Hook" was then place called "Finland." Is there anyone doing research on Finns that would have settled in this area? Many thanks for any help or info! :) Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS)

November 8, 1833 DELAWARE COUNTY REPUBLICAN FOR THE REPUBLICAN. MR. EDITOR. - In your last you have republished part of a document purporting to give a statistical account of the Mills, unimproved Mill seats, &c. in Delaware County. When that account was first made out in 1826, about eight years ago, it was in the main correct, but since that time the spirit of improvement has been so much abroad in our county as to render several alterations necessary. I will make a statement of some of the most important changes which have taken place on Darby and Cobb creeks, and their tributary streams. At No. 2, on Cobb creek, which is noticed as a mill seat, an extensive tilt mill has been erected by David SNYDER, at which all the spades and shovels stamped with his name are manufactured. At No. 2, on a branch of Cobbcreek, a large new grist mill has been erected this summer on the site of the old one mentioned in the document. At mill seat No. 4, on the same branch, a new saw mill has been erected by Abraham POWELL, calculated to do an extensive business. At No. 5, on Cobbcreek an extensive machine factory, and also a large machine card manufactory have since been erected by Coleman SELLERS. On the site of the grist mill, No. 13, on Cobbcreek, Mr. Dennis KELLY, who is now the proprietor, has erected a very extensive cotton factory. At No. 9. on Darby creek, a new paper mill has been erected on the site of the old one. At No. 13, on Darby creek, a large new grist and merchant mill has been erected in place of the old mill by Joseph B. LEEDOM. Also, at No. 15, an extensive new grist and merchant mill has been erected. At No. 18, on Darby creek, which is noticed as a mill seat, an extensive cotton manufactory has been erected. Any person acquainted with the improvements which have taken place on the other streams since the first publication of the document, would do well to furnish you with a notice of them.
Besides my new cousins, Elaine FRYER and Mary Ann WESTFALL, is anyone else researching FRYER? I am just beginnng to delve into my newly discovered names. I have ordered 4 films, and there are 12 more I want to order, but it helps immensely to have something with which to guide that research, as I am sure you all know. Elaine has certainly provided that guidance. Our particular FRYERS married into the PYLE family. Elaine's husband is descended from Thomas FRYER¹, ca 1715, and whose wife was Ann______. She has him in tax records in 1739, in Birmingham Twp. If anyone *is* researching them, do you know from whence they came? Were the FRYERS English? ( The PYLES and CHAMBERLAINS are heavily documented already, so I know about their English origins.) According to the data Elaine has shared with me, our common link starts with Thomas², b ca 1742, and Susanna PYLE, d/o John PYLE and Susanna CHAMBERLAIN, b 9 April 1739. (This Thomas is the one who was convicted, but pardoned, for rape in 1772. Elaine has copies of the trial transcript. ) Susanna was a Quaker, but Thomas was not. Thomas² had a brother named George. Thomas and Susanna's children are: David, b ca 1767, Hannah, who married Alban HOOK, (not the Rev. HOOK) and Thomas, b 1781,who married Lydia______. We know David and Thomas went to Mercer County Ohio, and that they are both buried there. David died in 1847 and Thomas³ in 1863. Does any belong to those brothers? (Thomas's eldest son was John Quincy FRYER, b 1808, according to Elaine, and *his* son was William S FRYER, b 1838 in OH) Thanks, Lynn PRETTYMAN in Baltimore. [email protected]
