    1. Ridley Park/Chester/Media Look-up Requests
    2. Jeff Palmer
    3. I'm transcribing an historical audio tape about noted-Ridley Park resident Charles Palmer recorded in 1964 and am hoping to confirm a couple of details where the tape is unintelligible or unclear. Perhaps SKS with access to old telephone or other directories of Ridley Park, Chester, Media or nearby areas for the 1960s or before might be able to confirm the following: - The "Chestnut [Grove?] House", located "opposite the Media railroad station" in 1881, was, perhaps, a boarding house. I'm hoping to confirm the name of the house. Any additional information about it would also be appreciated. - A "Dr. Kenneth [Gavroy?]" is mentioned as Mr. Palmer's doctor. He probably practiced in the Ridley Park area from 1948 through sometime after 1964. I'm hoping to confirm the correct spelling of his name. Any other information about him would also be appreciated. - Mr. Palmer worked in an office of the "Atlas [Ass?]urance Company" or the "Atlas [Ins?]urance Company" at 716 Edgemont Avenue (now Rte. 352) in Chester. I'm hoping to confirm the correct name of the insurance company. (Insurance companies of both names apparently exist.) Any other information about the office would also be appreciated. - Charles Palmer had a law office in Chester in 1910 (and perhaps as early as 1890 and as late as 1932) at "111 E. 5th". I'm hoping to determine if that would be "E. 5th Avenue", "E. 5th Street", or what. - Charles moved into the 716 Edgemont Avenue office (from the "111 E. 5th" office??) no later than 1932. I'd be interested to know when Mr. Palmer moved from the 111 E. 5th" office and when he moved into the one on Edgemont Avenue. Perhaps this might be indicated by directories shortly before and after 1932. - What north/south street in Chester divides "East" addresses from "West" addresses? TIA! I'm hoping someone could do some lookups for any BARLOWs in New Castle Co., DE or in Delaware Co., PA in the census records, wills, newspaper, (obits & marriages). I also, have the info from the two books: Delaware Marriages and Deaths from Newspapers 1729-1853 Delaware Marriages and Deaths from 1865-1874 There was a BARLOW website but it appears not to exist any longer -- does anyone have any knowledge about this site? 2. The snow is just about gone and it's supposed to rain on Thursday which should take care of the rest. Wear your galoshes because it's going to be muddy. It's supposed to be sunny this weekend with the temperatures in the high 40s and low 50s. Karen in PA

    3. I will be traveling to the Chester-Philadelphia area for business this Friday, and have a few days to look around. Could someone in the locality tell me what local conditions are like, such as if there is too much snow to get much out of a visit to a cemetery? I'm interested in seeing the Chester Rural Cemetery and Mount Vernon Cemetery in Philadelphia. Jay In MN

    1. Irish famine ship replica --The Jeanie Johnston
    2. Hi, If anyone comes across the passenger ship's lists for the Jeanie Johnston -- please let us know! :) Thank you. I received the following this morning & thought I would pass it on: Listers on the East Coast of the USA may be interested in the upcoming visit this spring and summer of the Jeanie Johnston - a replica of the immigrant ship that was said never to have lost one of its 2,500 passengers during more than a dozen crossings from 1848-1855. A search for Jeanie Johnston on Google gives 10,000+ sites. Here are the first three: http://www.jeaniejohnston.com ~ http://www.jeaniejohnston.ie ~ http://www.focuskerry.com/jeanie The full schedule for its USA visits should be in there somewhere or as it is confirmed. According to an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer, the first confirmed ports of call are West Palm Beach, Fla., about April 17, followed by Jacksonville, Fla., and Savannah, Ga., with about 20 more stops to follow. Key targets are Philadelphia in June, New York around the Fourth of July, Boston later that month, then on to Quebec and back home to Ireland. Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS)

    1. Alexander FIFE/Mary HUGHES Marriage Application
    2. Alexander FIFE and Mary HUGHES were married sometime about 1891 or 1892, most likely near Radnor or Aston. Can SKS tell me what resources are available in terms of application for marriage and whether or not it is likely to include parent's names? If by chance, someone has access to an index for that time period, I'd appreciate a lookup, please. Thanks in advance.

    3. > Did you know it is common knowledge NOT to give your mother's maiden > name to ANY banks, etc., for an identifier/password Helen, That is true NOW that we have all gotten so much smarter but 20 years ago it was a nearly universal practice and no one gave it a second thought. (I worked in banking back then.) I have had my checking account for close to 25 years so the info is still on file at the bank and I would have to close my account it to remove it. Also, if you go looking for a mortgage, at least here in NY, they want your mother's maiden name for the credit reporting agencies. It is better to be safe than sorry. 3. Did you know that your mother's maiden name is very valuable information to people looking to commit Identity Theft? You should never anyone's mother's maiden name along with the living individual's name. Banks use your mother's maiden name as an identifier/password so criminals can use it to access to your account information. I know that we think we are one big happy family in the genealogy community but we are not alone. So please be careful. Margaret

    1. WWII Casualties URL & my memory of a WW II Casualty
    2. http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/JRB.2ACE/1171 Message Board Post: The National Archives and Records Administration has placed on the Internet a list of military casualties which occurred during World War II. The database is scanned images of a computer printout made in 1946. Go to http://www.archives.gov/research_room/arc/index.html and scroll to World War II Army and Army Air Force Casualty List or World War II Navy Marine and Coast Guard Casualty List MY Memory: French Doll from World War II 5 March 2003 A French doll was sent to me by Mrs. GRABUSKI’s son, Leonard P. GRABUSKI from France. He was killed in the war. I believe he was in the Air Force. His mother lived at 321 W 7th Street & I lived with my grandmother Susan (McIntye) WEBBER & my parents at 317 W 7th Street, in Chester, Delaware Co., PA. I found this info: GRABUSKI Leonard P. 33505524 Sgt. KIA (Killed In Action) At the following website: http://www.archives.gov/research_room/arc/index.html On the tag, on the French Doll, it reads: Je m’appelle MAIE mon pays est Pont-Aven en Bretagne. There is a much smaller tag with numbers on it & it could be the price tag & serial number for the doll. My mother Helen (Bingler) WEBBER made Halloween customs for the three of us, (herself, me & my brother Bill), to be in Halloween Parades in Chester, Marcus Hook & Media, Delaware Co., PA. (c1952-1954) My mother being born in the Bronx was of course the “Statue of Liberty.” My brother Bill was “Uncle Sam.” And my custom was copied from the French Doll & I carried her in my hand in front of me as we walked in the parades. The crowds would always give us a standing ovation & we won prizes -- a bittersweet memory of man who gave his life for his country in World War II! Helen M. (Webber) Imburgia [email protected]

    3. I am ready to swear that somewhere in Ashmead's Delaware Co. History online, I read an account of a flood in which there was mention of a (John?) Maloy who acted swiftly to warn the populace of the coming torrent and saved someone's life as well. At the time I didn't think the man mentioned was one of mine and so I didn't bookmark the pages. Now I have learned a bit more and I think he might be one of mine but I cannot find any mention of him in Ashmead at all--anywhere. My family is from Avondale (now Crum Lynn) so I have gone page by page through Ridley Township and used the search engine for both Malloy and Maloy but with no luck at all. So, Am I just crazy and making things up? Am I missing it somehow? Or is there some other online resource that has it and I am just confused? Any and all help much appreciated! Margaret
