    1. Re: [PADELAWA] Boy Scout badge information
    2. I am not familiar with records kept at camps. As a merit badge counselor for 20 years I know there was a small 3-part card for each badge passed by each scout. I kept one part, I gave one of the segments of the card to the scout, and I believe the third part was filed at the local scout district headquarters for the troop. Maybe the 3rd part was kept by the scoutmaster instead of being filed at the district headquarters. Tom Yarnall

    3. Several years ago I stopped at Marple Church and asked the workers there if any genealogy records were available. There weren't any then, but they assured me that such records were in process and would "soon" be available for the asking. It's all volunteer work, but perhaps a nice letter to the Church itself might be worth trying. 2. Hi Barb, Yes, got snow before you did...not quite like the really nice big snowfalls that would come in the middle of night and would wake up to the muffled sound of cars with broken chain clanking and the excitement of the possibility of no school that day. I bought the books for Nancy's older sister, no hope for Nancy she is too busy with children, puppies and work. I also bought the book Edgmont, the story of a township which is really good, lots of house pictures. Nancee, Ca. n a message dated 1/25/2007 2:00:07 P.M. Pacific Standard Time, SELLETTB@neumann.edu writes: How's CA? Are you in the "snow-zone" or did you miss that taste of your old stomping grounds? We finally got some our way. Yes, I thought I might try and get some photos on one of my lunch time walks. I wish they were a bit more substantial though (most only shells). There was one spot that I was told was an old pig farm along the creek located near Pennell Road. I know how you feel about trying to get family interested in genealogy, but buy the books for your niece (I haven't seen her this week yet) was a good ploy. At least she's noticing! It's a start...a subtle one. "Great oaks grow from little acorns", as they say. Speaking of books, I seem to remember a book put out a few years ago for Middleton Twp's Anniversary. I remember it took in parts of Aston, but I think it stop near Mount Alverno Road. Does anyone recall this? Barb

    3. I know it's not. Here are pictures of my very old stone house! http://www.flickr.com/photos/all_moi_varmints/sets/72057594047832912/ We're out in western Chester County, part of a huge parcel that Henry Marsh got from the Penn brothers. I have been trying to find out when the house was built, but there were three stone houses on the parcel and it's almost impossible to find out which one was which! We believe it was built prior to 1800 but don't hold me to it....and that tree in the front is really old, too.... Lynn >>Don't think that this is anything like an exhaustive list. These are mostly high-profile historic houses. There are hundreds more anonymous stone (and frame) houses dating back to Pennsylvania's earliest settlers. Mark<<

    3. Further to my earlier post: the flyleaf, front and back, of the book shows a reproduction of "A Mapp of Ye Improved Part of Pennsylvania, Divided into Countyes, Townships and Lotts, Surveyed by Thos. Holmes, sold by P. Len of ye Atlas & Hercules in Cheapside." It also includes a listing of some of the inhabitants of Chester and Bucks Counties and Philadelphia. The map includes, also, a dedication to William Penn, Esq., Proprietor & Governor of Pennsylvania, humbly presented by In. Harris. A date for the map is not shown. Marj, in New Bern, NC -----Original Message----- From: padelawa-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:padelawa-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Marjorie B. Winter Sent: Thursday, January 25, 2007 4:33 PM To: padelawa@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PADELAWA] Bethel/Stone Houses Listers: It is a great pleasure to read this discussion of Pennsylvania's old stone homes. In 1948, we purchased one of the tenant houses on the Buckwalter Farm west of Phoenixville, and we lived in it for 22 years. As our family expanded, we expanded the house, but we took care not to disturb the structure of the original small stone home. It was a most satisfying experience and one we remember with deep feelings. We used to say the old house was loaded with charm and inconvenience, but as our family grew and we needed more room, we chose to stay in that house and extend it to fit our needs. It has sold several times since we left there in 1972. Our family grew up and went off to homes of their own and we no longer needed the expanded home. Each of the children admits to a great feeling of history and nostalgia when they think of their first home. As a birthday gift for my husband last year, I bought a copy of Stone Houses, the book you have all been studying and commenting about. I found the copy of the book on display in a Florida gift shop, the only copy they had. The ID for the book is that it was first published and copyrighted in 2005 by Rizzolli International Publications. ISBN-0-8478-2687-2, LCCN: 2005900673. The individual essayists are identified for each house. Photographs and one essay (p. 162) are by Geoffrey Cross. It is, indeed, a "coffee table book" to the eye, but has much greater significance to those of us who have lived in and loved SE Pennsylvania. If anyone needs any specific information from the book, just ask me off list. You will enjoy this as much as we do. Marj, formerly a Delaware/Chester Countian, now living in historic New Bern, NC.
