Helen, This is wonderful information. Thank you for providing it. I do have one observation. When I was at the County Archives, in July 2006, looking for birth and death info for my relatives, who lived in the city of Chester, I was told the microfilm would not include that jurisdiction. Hi Lynn, Things may have changed in the last few years, but the most recent info I have is that there is not an Historical Society for Media. There was, however, a Preservation Society: Media Historical Preservation, Inc., 610-566-5210 There is a collection of historic materials at the Media - Upper Providence Library at 1 East Front Street, Media, PA 19063, Phone: 610-566-1918; http://www.medialibrary.org Also, the Borough website (http://www.mediaborough.com) has this info: Historic Archives Commission (members: 5 / term: 5 years) The Historic Archives Commission acts as custodian for any archival materials relating to the Borough of Media and the vicinity of the Borough of Media, consisting of but not limited to, photographs, slides, movie film, newspaper articles, electronic recording tapes or materials, historic notes, memorabilia, artifacts, and archeological findings. They maintain a display for public use at the library. The Commission can be contacted at historicarchives@dca.net Hope this helps, Rick At 10:49 PM 2/5/2007, you wrote: >Does Media have a Historical Society or Commission? Hi Jean, My position at DCHS was eliminated back in the late 90s. I'm a church secretary now. I really miss the history! Did you try to get the newspaper photo enhanced? Anyone with a scanner and software could give it a try - or go to Wal-Mart. Please write back on my own address - since this isn't research help for anyone. Yes, I just decided to join the list yesterday to ask about the boy scout badge of my dad's as well as the photo in the Chester Times, that I want to try and get. I guess I will have to hoof it to Harrisburg on a Saturday and look for that edition of the paper and try another copy. My copy from 1957 is brown and withered with age! Are you still at the Historical Society? I think that is where I went many years ago when I was looking for Westinghouse information etc. I still haven't found what I wanted on that subject. But I still keep digging for more and more family history. We don't get down there very often..........about twice a year. We are down to Joyce as our only living sibling ( besides Joanne ) and the rest are gone. Jacky died in 1993 and June died a year ago. Joanne and husband are living in Lynchburg, VA where he teaches at Liberty University. We are still comfortable here in Lancaster County. Chuck retired from the church but is working another job. Great link, Rick. I see why I thought it was 24 merit badges - our son got his Eagle award back around 1972 when it was 24.- now back to 21. Tom
Hi again, I actually attended camp Delmont as a scout in the 60's and early 70's... Here's some info from http://www.scoutcamp.org/oldestcamps.asp "Camp Delmont was named after the two counties that made up the original Valley Forge Council, DELaware and MONTgomery. It is now one of the two camps that make up the 1400+ acre Musser Scout Reservation in Pennsylvania. The original 35 acres was purchased for $500.00 and included a stone house. Summer Camp was first held there in 1916. The name "Camp Delmont" was used at other locations for summer camp previous to 1916. The first camp of the Valley Forge Council was Camp Pequea, located along the Susquehanna River 15 miles Southwest of Lancaster, this camp was owned by a trolley company and was offered to all scouts from Eastern Penna. In 1913, the Council obtained the rights to use White's Island in the Delaware below Scudder's Falls and this camp was known as Camp Delmont. This camp was used in 1913 and 1914. In 1915, they moved to an island in the Schulykill known as Pioneer Island. It was used during 1915 and 1916. In 1916, the first section of what is now Delmont Scout Reservation was purchased and used that year as a summer camp." Up until 1996, Camp Delmont was part of the Valley Forge Council. At that time a number of SE Pa. councils merged into the Cradle of Liberty Council. Here's their contact info: Cradle of Liberty Council 22nd & Winter St. Philadelphia, PA 19103-1085 Phone: (215) 988-9811 Web site: http://www.colbsa.org Hope this helps, Rick At 06:24 PM 2/3/2007, you wrote: >Camp Delmont is not familiar to me. Jean, There was a fire at the Chester Times, now know as The Delaware County Daily Times, I believe in the 1970s. I doubt very much if they would have this picture. The Delaware County Historical Society, (DCHS), has this news paper on micro film, (1876-1971?). A copy of this picture from their micro film machine may not be very good but you can always try. :) Good luck. Jean, Camp Delmont is or was in the Poconos (don't know if it's still around). My brother went there in the late 50s/early 60s. Karen Jean Arnold wrote: > This is interesting. Camp Delmont is not familiar to me. Treasure Island is an island in the Delaware River north of Phila. May be re-named now. I expect that requirements for the Eagle Scout badge would have been specified in the Boy Scout Handbook. At least two 1923 editions are currently being offered on eBay. The current bid on one of them is only $5.50 (plus S&H). It's strange, but I find very little interest by the BSA in preserving history of the early days of Scouting. My father was a Boy Scout in Phila. from about 1912-13. I have his Smokey the Bear hat he wore in Parades in that city. I also have his whistle from his uniform. I know my Dad was instrumental in developing the Treasure Island Camp in the Delaware River; years later a man younger that Dad told me he had worked under him at Treasure Island in the early days. I can't seem to get any Scout officials interested in my Dad's memoribilia nor can I find anyone interested in Treasure Island.
