I have some questions about where you found the information: (1)How were you able to look up the PA States Archives Card Files? Am I able to do the same thing from my computer? (2)Since I live in Florida, going to the Nat'l Archives in WashDC is out of the question. So since I do have the pension application numbers, how can I retrieve the original documentation? Thanks, Nora Florida Yes Nora, the Civil War Veteran's Card Files are online now. Here's the URL _http://www.digitalarchives.state.pa.us/_ (http://www.digitalarchives.state.pa.us/) Click on explore historical records, then Civil War Veteran card files and browse thru the name menu or enter the surname in the search engine. About the national archives records. There are several companies for hire that search your pension records, but it gets pretty expensive. Try a google search. I can't think of the one I used years ago, but it costs like $150. They send you their roll call cards and the works. If they lost any weapons or were charged for anything lost. I don't think the Archives themselves search for hire? I've been there several times. 3. You may request Civil War veterans' records from the National Archives by mail or online. Details are at the link below: http://www.archives.gov/genealogy/military/civil-war/index.html#mail Use form NATF-85 for pension files, which are the most useful for genealogy. Use NATF-86 for military files. Military files sound as if they would be more detailed, but I have found pension files to have much more material, including letters home and such. The cost to have file copied, up to 100 pages is $75. Wow, it was $35 when I started ordering pension files, about 15 years ago. You need to know your ancestor's name and regiment, and if you know the company as well, that helps. It takes a long time to get reply, more than eight weeks, but sometimes you get a very fat manila envelope stuffed full, in the mailbox as a reward. If they can't find a file, they return your check or credit your account. -----Original Message----- From: padauphi-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:padauphi-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Nrtennison@aol.com Sent: Saturday, August 25, 2007 5:02 PM To: padauphi@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PADAUPHI] Civil War service question In a message dated 8/25/2007 4:30:34 PM Eastern Daylight Time, cozycottage2005@bellsouth.net writes: Nelson, Thanks for the information.
