The Dauphin County Almshouse is in pretty much the same location now as when it was established in the middle of the 1800's: at 28th and Paxton Streets. Now it is called Dauphin Manor, but it has been called the county poorhouse, county asylum and county almshouse in the past. Most of what we now call 28th Street was named "Poorhouse Road" in the late 1800's and early 1900's. On the 1875 Swatara Township, Dauphin County map at Bob Maley's website,(http://maley.net/atlas/) you can see the almshouse, identified as "County Asylum" by following Paxton Street (not identified, but the road that leaves the city from the "G" in "Harrisburg") from the city limits due east. County coroner Graham Hetrick recently successfully saved most of the almshouse cemetery from being lost to construction. It is now marked. Records of the county almshouse are at the state archives in Harrisburg, some on microfilm.
