Wm. Henry Egle was the State's Librarian in the late 1800s, and collected writings from lots of people, publishing those letters and queries in a weekly newspaper column. He walked all over the state, reading tombstone engravings in the old (even at that time) cemeteries and carefully recording that data for publishing in his column. He walked through old, falling-down homes and buildings, detailing his observations, again for publication. FTW, in cooperation with the publishing company, compiled his 13 volumes onto a single CD and it is now available for just $9.95 plus shipping. I recommend it to EVERYONE doing any kind of research in Pennsylvania, even though most of the material centers around central Pennsylvania I'm inserting the number of appearances on the CD of the surnames you mention: I am researching my husband's KAYLOR (none), HOFFER (20, but no Nancy Anna), SHELLY (200 or so), BELL (about 440), CASSEL (130), > BALSBAUGH (40), BAUM (80)and GIBBLE (none)surnames. I've been using it since the early '80s, and am quite comfortable with it, preferring it over some other old ones such as Mozilla, Eudora, or what have you. Yes, even better, in my opinion, than Microsoft's Internet Explorer, which was probably copied from successful browsers (in my opinion). HOWEVER, Netscape was bought out by AOL, I believe, and a new Version, 6, became available. Several of us got it immediately, and almost as immediately, deleted it in favor of older versions of Netscape. It appears, almost, that a degraded browser was deliberately substituted for Netscape, perhaps to 'encourage' the use of other programs. This is an opinion I formed by attempting to use Netscape6 for several weeks, but gave up and went back to Netscape4.7 The apologies are because Netscape6 changes the way it "reads" my home pages, and they look pretty sloppy, while they still look pretty good to me on Netscape4.7 Incidentally, you may be interested in my Shellys Island Shelleys: <http://home.att.net/~chasfies/Shelleys.html> -- Regards, with regrets to Netscape6 users (what a mess!)
