I have "On The Main Line", by Edwin P. Alexander, the story of the Pennsylvania RR in the 19th century. The book doesn't answer Dora's question, but does have the following facts: In the chapter on the Philadelphia Division, it lists two sections to the division: The Philadelphia and Columbia RR, opened in 1834, and The Harrisburg, Portsmouth, Mt. Joy and Lancaster (a private co. leased for 20 years in 1848 and again for 999 years in 1861. Schedules for 1852, 1855, 1875 and 1909 are given. In 1852 the line stopped at Elizabethtown, in 1855 at Conewago, Highspire Sta. is listed in the 1875 schedule at 99.0 miles from the Phila. beginning at 32nd and Market Sts. The 1875 schedule included stops at Baldwin, 102 mi. and Lochiel, 104 mi. before Harrisburg, at 105 mi. In 1909, the schedule goes Highspire, Steelton, Harrisburg. Also in 1909, the road started at Broad St. Sta. in Phila. and the mileage to Harrisburg is changed to 103.9. There are many fine pictures in this book, but none of Highspire. Dillersville Junction where the two roads came together is shown in 1888, and there is an 1880's shot of the Steelton switch tower. Perhaps some of this will jog some of the old railroaders' memories. BIll Hawk

(Note 'stations'; there were two. Passengers purchased their tickets at the freight station house, then walked to the small passenger station house.) We'll talk some more after her kitchen is cleared up - she's in the middle of a remodeling job. The old station, attached to her house, was torn down sometime around 1970. Just food for thought for right now. Stationmasters she recalls were KLUCKNER and STONER, and her 1854 MAP shows the houses, station, and tracks in Highspire -- CHARLES EARL FIES -- Fies Family Fotos <http://home.att.net/~chasfies/> BABB - HARTMAN <http://home.att.net/~chasfies/Babbs.html> DAUPHIN CO.
