There is a Samuel Mater, 31 years old in 1880, a sailor living in a boarding house in Sandusky, Ohio. That is a port on Lake Erie for you poor non-Buckeyes. Samuel told the census enumerator that he was born in Switzerland. A question for my Swiss friends. Is Mater listed in the "Familiennamenbuch der Schweiz",which lists all Swiss surnames as of 1962 and where they held citizenship? And did Mater hold citizenship before 1800 - if so where? I thank my Swiss friends in advance.
