In Civil War organization, the smallest organizational unit was the company, which had a letter designation. A company had about 100 men and usually ten companies (designated A through J) made a regiment. Three or more regiments made a brigade, and two, three, four or more brigades, plus an artillery brigade, made a Division. Two or more Divisions made an Army Corps, and two or more Corps made an Army. Of course this organizational structure varied widely, and as the war progressed, the number of men in a company fell with casualties and disease. They did not automatically fill the ranks, but rather had to wait until someone could return home to recruit more men for the company. So often you find companies with little more than a dozen men left. -----Original Message----- From: padauphi-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:padauphi-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Barbara Sent: Saturday, August 25, 2007 12:52 PM To: padauphi@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PADAUPHI] Civil War service question Ray - that was my error. Thanks, Nora Florida Yes Nora, the Civil War Veteran's Card Files are online now. Here's the URL _http://www.digitalarchives.state.pa.us/_ (http://www.digitalarchives.state.pa.us/) Click on explore historical records, then Civil War Veteran card files and browse thru the name menu or enter the surname in the search engine. About the national archives records. There are several companies for hire that search your pension records, but it gets pretty expensive. Try a google search. I can't think of the one I used years ago, but it costs like $150. They send you their roll call cards and the works. If they lost any weapons or were charged for anything lost. I don't think the Archives themselves search for hire? I've been there several times. Basically your right....That is generally the structure....Battery (in stead of Company) is used in Artillery Units...that is even true today.. In Cavalry units today they go by Troup (instead of Company), this carries over from the Regular Army Unit of the 1800's...ie. 7th Cav (Gen Custer's unit).. In the Civil War, the Cav units used company...my Great Grandfather's son was in Co I, 9th Cav, PA Vol. Joe in sunny Arizona ----- Original Message ----- From: "George F. I'm not convinced yet about that B. I suggested Battalion but company B makes more sense if there is a 2nd Regiment. Only problem is I think in todays structure a Regiment is made of Battalions and Battalions are made of Companies which means something is missing. Perhaps the B is a Battery as Artilery has such a group. In any case I hope we get an expert to pipe in on the subject.
