If you have Eastern Star in your family, you're going to find Masons. You may even find the emblems on tombstones. You probably won't get a lot of information from the records either. http://www.easternstar.org/oes/oeshistory.html The history of the Eastern Star is divided into three Eras: 1. The First Era extended from 1850 to 1866, under the leadership of Dr. Rob Morris, Poet Laureate of Masonry. 2. The Second Era extended from 1860 to 1876, under the leadership of Robert Macoy of New York. 3. The Third Era extends from 1876, when the General Grand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, was established to the present time. http://www.easternstar.org/oes/join.html Who may join: Only men who are Masons are eligible and only women with specific Masonic affiliation may be members. These affiliations include: * Affiliated Master Masons in good standing, * the wives * daughters * legally adopted daughters * mothers * widows * sisters * half sisters * granddaughters * stepmothers * stepdaughters * stepsisters * daughters-in-law * grandmothers * great granddaughters * nieces * great nieces * mothers-in-law * sisters-in-law and daughters of sisters or brothers of affiliated Master Masons in good standing, or if deceased were in good standing at the time of their death; as well as members - either active for three(3) years or majority - of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls or of the International Order of Job's daughters, each of whom having attained to at least the age of eighteen (18) years, are eligible to membership in the Order of the Eastern Star. ewintr wrote: > Hello, > > Has anyone on this list ever heard of an organization > called the "Eastern Star", apparently in Dauphin Co? Many thanks to all who replied to my question. These seem to be very active, helpful mailing lists!!! It sounds as though contacting the organization will not yield any help regarding my ancestors though since they would not reveal anything about their members. I thoroughly enjoyed going to the web site and viewing the clothing styles of the women in earlier eras!! I can only imagine how grand my ancestors must have looked in their finest!! I know that several members of my direct line ( ZEIGLER ) were members, and my step-grandfather ( Donald REED ) was also a member. Time period for them would have been 1880-1950 or so. Thank you all again for the information, Elizabeth ==================================================== --- Barbara <brivas1@cox.net> wrote: > If you have Eastern Star in your family, you're > going to find Masons. > You may even find the emblems on tombstones. I forgot to add that the organization might be able to tell you the name of the Mason on whose membership she joined but they probably will not as that would possibly reveal one of their secrets. I am a member of the Eastern Star and have had many friends in the Dauphin County branch. They do not have genealogical information on members. They could not help you with this. The only thing they could possibly furnish is the address of the person at the time of membership. Yup, it's the female auxiliary or whatever of teh Masons. Or one of them. My mother belonged to it; it was big in her rural area. I don't know anything about it in Dauphin County, but the local masonic lodge ought to be able to tell you. They might have some basic biographical information; I don't know. This is not an ancient organization; if your "ancestors" belonged it, people who were members with tehm may still be around; talking to them will probably yield more information than whatever the organization might have in its files. Elizabeth, Eastern Star is a service organization with the Masons. It is all over the country. My aunt Sally belonged to it but it is not a religion in and of itself. Hello, I would like to have any QUAID info that anyone has. Primary area is Harrisburg around 1830 and forward. Also New York before 1850. Thanks Don Firsdon
You may request Civil War veterans' records from the National Archives by mail or online. Details are at the link below: http://www.archives.gov/genealogy/military/civil-war/index.html#mail Use form NATF-85 for pension files, which are the most useful for genealogy. Use NATF-86 for military files. Military files sound as if they would be more detailed, but I have found pension files to have much more material, including letters home and such. The cost to have file copied, up to 100 pages is $75. Wow, it was $35 when I started ordering pension files, about 15 years ago. You need to know your ancestor's name and regiment, and if you know the company as well, that helps. It takes a long time to get reply, more than eight weeks, but sometimes you get a very fat manila envelope stuffed full, in the mailbox as a reward. If they can't find a file, they return your check or credit your account. -----Original Message----- From: padauphi-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:padauphi-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Nrtennison@aol.com Sent: Saturday, August 25, 2007 5:02 PM To: padauphi@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PADAUPHI] Civil War service question In a message dated 8/25/2007 4:30:34 PM Eastern Daylight Time, cozycottage2005@bellsouth.net writes: Nelson, Thanks for the information.
