    3. Beverly, You'll probably get lots of suggestions but one thought I had is that if you live near a college or university, or even a high school, that has a German language curriculum, you might try contacting them. There may be a student who needs a project, or a faculty member who would be willing to do it or suggest someone. Be prepared to offer monetary compensation however. I was fortunate in that I had a co-worker whose husband was German and he translated correspendence for me that I was sending to Germany and translating the replies. Good luck! They were written in German scrip in not very clear handwriting. I took them to the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society and had them translated by a gentleman named Noah Good. I paid him $20.00 per hour but it was worth every bit of the $80.00 he charged. He did a great job. Mr. Good was up in years at that time, but he could still be with us. It might be worth a try. 3. Thank you to everyone that replied to my question on translating the letters. I will be looking into some of these options. And yes, it is very possible they are Pennsylvania Dutch and not a true German. I can make out some words and some sentences seem to be all English. The story of the letters is turning into somewhat of an interesting journey ... four Sassaman brothers (Schuylkill Co.) served in the Civil War. One brother died during the war and is buried in the Hampton National Cemetery, Hampton, VA. Two of the brothers returned to Schuylkill County, married and had families. I find the last brother/wife and child in Indiana on the 1880 census. On the 1890 Veteran's census, the wife, now back to Schuylkill Co. PA, says she was deserted by her husband and can't provide the requested information for the census. Later the woman lists herself as a widow and appears in Lehigh County up to and including the 1930 census. I have now confirmed the wayward husband was buried in the cemetery at Hampton in 1909. I spoke to an individual from the cemetery this morning and he said I have all the information that they have. I am curious what the letters might fill in about these four men. There are signatures that identify that letters as having been written by all four to their sister Sarah. Thank you all again. Beverly Wyld

    2. Hi, I presume they are not only written in German , but also in the old German script? If you'd like to scan one and email it to me, I'd be happy to take a stab at it. My Germans' a bit rusty, but I have a good dictionary, and I can read the script.

    3. At NARA, I get ledger-sized copies of the census. So, for a few years, I've been looking for a storage solution for them. I finally found one! Staples has a ledger-sized wallet (expandable, with flap and cord to secure contents). Just 1 drawback - no dividers (you'll have to find your own).
