    1. Re: [PADAUPHI] Anyone know about Cove train station?
    2. In the book titled Pennsylvania Line on page 151, "Cove" is listed as a train station in Perry county, Penn township. I think it's just south of Duncannon, near Susquenita High School. It would be about 8 mile north of Harrisburg on the opposite side of the Susquehana River. If you want to know the exact location? I can find it for you. 3. Hi Nora, According to the book _American Place Names of Long Ago_, A Replication of the Index to Cram's Unrivaled Atlas of the World as Based on the Census of 1890. Assembled, with an Introduction by Gilbert S. Bahn, Ph.D and reprinted in 1998 by Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. Baltimore, MD Cove, Perry Co., Pa (this is just west of Harrisburg) It is stated that "this is a small place whose population was taken together with the civil district in which it was located, and the exact figure being unknown." There was an Express office located there (thus the train stop). There was no post office there. I have no further info and do not know how long this place existed as "Cove." Hope this helps you in your research. Sue Nora Avery wrote: >I have a photo of some of my relatives taken in June 1918 who are at at >small train station. The sign clearly says "Cove." 3. Shelley, If you'd like to scan those photos before you send it off to the family, I can put them on Dauphin Archives the way I made this album for Blair Archives - http://www.usgwarchives.org/pa/blair/photos/hayes-nofsker.htm That way, more relatives would have the opportunity to view the photos and they would be available permanently as part of the Archives. Photos could be emailed to me, or uploaded here - http://www.genrecords.org/pafiles/ using the photo submission link. Please let me know if you're interested. I think it's fantastic that you've found these pix. What I wouldn't give for a photo of some of my folks, who do not seem to have been the types to keep albums. *sigh* Judy Banja Dauphin County USGenWeb Archives http://usgwarchives.org/pa/dauphin/ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Shelley Cardiel" <cardiels@comcast.net> To: <PADAUPHI@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, June 01, 2008 3:17 PM Subject: [PADAUPHI] DAY Family Photograph Album I've "rescued" an old photograph album which appears to have originally belonged to the DAY Family of Pennsylvania. 3. Hello Fellow Listers: You're invited to attend the first quarterly "Special Presentation" on Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at The Harry Lenig Library, home of The Perry Historians, a genealogical library located just east of New Bloomfield, Perry Co., PA. on Rt. 34. Stephen Jury, a Civil War reenactor from New Bloomfield, will be speaking on the subject of the 11th Pennsylvania Volunteers, a 3-year service regiment of soldiers during the Civil War. The 11th Pennsylvania Volunteers was comprised of the following companies: Company A was recruited at Carlisle, Cumberland County and from Harrisburg, Dauphin County Company B was recruited at Lock Haven, Clinton County Company C was recruited at Latrobe, Westmoreland County Company D was recruited at Jersey Shore, Lycoming County Company E was recruited at Latrobe and Ligonier, Westmoreland County Company F was recruited at Salem, Westmoreland County Company G was recruited at Allegheny County Company H was recruited at Mauch Chunk, Carbon County Company I was recruited at Greensburg, Westmoreland County Company K was recruited at Youngstown, Westmoreland County Ties from this regiment to Perry County were formed when Arnold Lobaugh, then a clerk, moved with his family from Newport, Oliver Twp., Perry Co. to Greensburg, Westmoreland Co. in about 1858 or 1859, became a merchant and enlisted in Company I from there. He was mustered into the Army on September 20, 1861 for 3-year's service as a Private. Not long after his enlistment, he was promoted to 1st Sergeant and one year after his enlistment, on September 20, 1862 he was commissioned to Lieutenant. Within a few days after his promotion to Lieutenant, Arnold Lobaugh died of his wounds on September 26, 1862, which he received during the Battle of Antietam in Maryland. His obituary as found in the Advocate and Press - dated October 1, 1862: Death of Lieut. Lobach - We have to record the death of another brave and true man. Lieut. ARNOLD LOBACH, of this county, who was wounded in the late battles in Maryland, died after lingering a few days. His body was brought to Newport and interred Sunday. LIEUT. LOBACH enlisted in Greensburg as a private in Co. I, 11th PA Reserves. He was made 1st Sergeant and afterwards we are informed, was commissioned a Lieutenant. He served his country well and faithfully. Peace to his ashes. At the time of Arnold Lobaugh's death, he was but 44 years of age being born on 24-Sep-1818 and had been 20 years married to Mary Hartzell - their marriage taking place on March 1, 1842 in Perry County. As his obituary stated, his body was brought back to his old hometown and was buried in Section A1, Grave #12 of the Old Newport Cemetery. After the death of her husband, Mary along with their children, returned to Newport. Lieutenant Lobaugh, his wife and 7 of their children whom died while young, have a large tombstone marking their graves, which still stands to this day. This presentation is FREE of charge and open to the general public. All are invited to attend!

    3. I think it depends upon the type of record. Some records weren't even kept until after 1900 or later. They also may show modern records, but just names and dates and not the actual photo of the event (such as marriage licenses) I think that's to avoid people stealing identities. That's only my opinion. But it's going to be hard to find those older records. Have you looked at the USGENWeb site for the particular counties? Try what Richard suggested and AskALibrarian Nrtennison@aol.com wrote: > > How far back do these digital archive records go? 3. Washington State also has a very active AskALibrarian program that I've found helpful in the past. You can email a query to someone at the state library who will research vital records, obituaries, etc. and send you .pdf copies of their findings. There is no charge for the service. Go to http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/ask.aspx for more information. Note: Other states have similar programs. You can track them down by running a Google search for AskALibrarian and the name of the state you're interested in. Pennsylvania has a live chat service called Ask Here PA. I haven't tried it yet, but you can check it out at http://tinyurl.com/5sggjs Cheers, Richard Aurand Sherer

    1. [PADAUPHI] Postal Service Records
    2. Searer
    3. Hi Nora - One possibility is the National Archives microfilms if your ancestor was a postmaster. The National Archives of the US has designated the Records of the Post Office Department as Record Group 28. These holdings include the Orders ("Journals") of the Postmaster General, 1835-1953. There are 145 rolls in this microfilm publication in which the Post Office Department record. The record shows the dates of establishment and discontinuance of post offices, their changes of name, and the names of the appointment dates of their postmasters. The record consists of 181 manuscript volumes divided among the approximate periods 1932-42, 1843-57, 1874-88, 1890-1929, and 1930- September 30, 1971. (Excerpted from Introduction to Record Group 28 written by James A. Paulauskas.) I see nothing that records the names of employees other than the postmaster in this microfilm group. If you could send me the name and time period of interest I can check to see if your ancestor is recorded as postmaster in Harrisburg. I do not have access to the full microfilm for Dauphin County, only a few sheets that I copied some time ago. I have no access to the microfilm for Maryland so I could not help there at all.
