    3. OK everyone. I stand corrected. Took a drive this morning - discovered that route 322 does indeed loop around Harrisburg from route 39 to I81 to I83 headed south til it branches off to head east to Hershey. Never noticed that - not too many signs on I83 and I don't usually go that way to get to 322. In addition, I discovered that there is a much smaller Shoop's cemetery on Locust Lane next to the high school - along a part of Locust Lane that I don't normally travel. It is the cremation section and is totally separate from the much larger main cemetery. There is a crescent driveway that goes past several rows of regular headstones - just much closer together than a non-cremation burial would be. I would think this is probably a much newer part of the cemetery holdings since cremation has become more widespread/accepted in the last couple of decades. Sorry for causing confusion - even living in the same locality doesn't mean one always knows best. Joan Bretz

    2. If memory serves me correctly, "Altview" was a neighborhood between Penbrook and Colonial Park, right there where I83 intersects with Jonestown Rd. or rt.22, just a little west of where the old Shoops Church was. Also I'm sure I entered the south Shoops Cemetery off Locust Lane????? Oh and yes Rt. 322 is now conjuncted from Hershey with rt. 83 @ Eisenhower interchange, [a.k.a. concrete jungle] up rt 83 n to 81s & 83 split down to new rt. 322w up toward Dauphin. 3. Michael. Looked at the map and you are correct in what you saw on yours. However, the map is incorrect - there is no cemetery on Locust Lane next to the high school. And route 322 does not follow I83 north - if you go to the intersection of I283 and I83, you will see the route 322 heads east toward Hershey while I83 heads north to join I81. There are several other errors that I saw on the map which are not related to the question at hand. And one thing that I did not mention in my earlier emails is that I live in Lower Paxton Township and drive past all these areas quite frequently so know whereof I speak. Though I confess I can't picture how route 322 goes - maybe I'll have to go for a drive tomorrow and follow it. For this, I was going by a map, which has 2 distinct areas marked 'Shoops Cemetery'. One is squarely on Locust Lane. I agree that Rt. 83 runs by the other section; but my map has it as Rt. 322 also.

    3. Hi Donna. Saw this message and thought I would respond. Colonial Park is east of the city of Harrisburg, pretty much directly going away from the capitol building - Route 22/Walnut Street/Jonestown Road run right past the Colonial Park Mall. Don't know how much traveling you have done here in Harrisburg as to whether you would know where the mall is located. The old Shoop's Church would have been catty cornered from the current mall - if you look at a road atlas for I83, there is an exit at Colonial Park - the exit ramp runs right past where the church used to be on the way to Route 22 - there are pine trees up on a bluff that I believe flanked the church. The church was originally a joint church with reformed and evangelical congregations. The reformed congregation moved out to its own building and the evangelical congregation was already making plans to relocate. So when they built the I83 exit, the church was removed. The old church cemetery was removed in 1958 - they basically exhumed anything that could remotely have been human remains, dust or whatever and put it in special baggies and put them all in about ten vaults in the public Shoops cemetery with a single memorial marker - this is located right near the location of the old church, just a few feet from the I83 exit ramp. In fact there are a few headstones from behind the old church that are part of the current cemetery. It is my understanding that the headstones from the disinterred graves were buried at the site of the cemetery. There is a list of burials at the old cemetery - don't know how long they were having burials there. I have been to the office of Shoops Cemetery and they are very helpful. I can check my list of burials at the old cemetery - 3d great grandfather was buried there, which unfortunately we did not learn til 20 some years later - since here date of death was nearly 20 years prior to the old cemetery removal. And I can stop by the current cemetery office to look at their records to see if that is where she is buried. I also have some information on the old church including some photos from publications that I have collected if you are interested. And I could take photos of the gravesite if it is at the current cemetery. I don't know the reference to Altview. It could have been a small area that has since been swallowed up by the Lower Paxton Township. I don't know how built up that area was in the early 1940s. The telephone directory from back then might give a street address which would help to pinpoint it. Actually I think I knew Reverend Ziegler - from my school days - and might even have a newspaper photo with him in it from PTA days - probably went to school with his kids, though not in my class. Never know that he was at Shoop's Church though. The funeral parlor would have been about 10 blocks down the street from the church and cemetery. Let me know what information I can provide for you. Thanks Donna Glant > Terrian in Apopka, FL e-mail: dgterrian@earthlink.net Colonial Park is a big suburb (but unincorporated) of Harrisburg, about 5 miles east. Shoops Cemetery is in 2 parts; one is on Locust Lane, situated between Colonial Park and Progress (which is just west of Colonial Park), and the other is on Jonestown Rd. in the SE section of the Rt. 22 / 322 interchange. I couldn't find Altview, or even an Altview Road or such. Someone that knows the history will have to help there. > Funeral Services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the > Warren J. Snyder funeral parlor, 3037 Jonestown Road I tried to find this establishment in the phonebook and on switchboard.com - seems like it's not around anymore.
