I've "rescued" an old photograph of Emma and Lee BEAR which was taken at the John D. Lemer Studio in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with the two children ranging in age from infant to about 4 years old. Based on limited research I was able to gather some information regarding the children and their family: Lee Bidler BEAR b. 2 Aug 1890 in Carlisle, PA to parents Elmer & Kathy BEAR. Lee married Martha May GILBERT (b. 24 Jul 1891 in Roxbury, PA) on 26 Jun 1909 in Harrisburg, PA and together they had two children; Edith Mable, and Lee Bidler BEAR born in 1910 and 1915 respectively. Lee died 9 Feb 1967 in Harrisburg, PA. Census records provide the following information: 1910 census of Harrisburg, PA: Elmer BEAR, age 46, married 25 years, born PA, parents born PA, a Commercial Traveler Kate C. BEAR, wife, age 46, married 25 years, 3 children/3 living, born PA, parents born PA Emma J. DONLEY, dau, age 24, married 4 years, 3 children/3 living, born PA Lee B. BEAR, son, age 19, newly married, born PA, a Commercial Traveler Eileen BEAR, dau, age 14, born PA James E. DONLEY, son-in-law, age 26, married 4 years, born PA, parents born PA, an Overseer Harriet H. DONLEY, granddau, age 3, born PA Elmer B. DONLEY, grandson, age 1 year + 9 months, born PA Catherine H. DONLEY, granddau, age 2 months, born PA 1920 census of Harrisburg, PA: James DONLEY, age 35, born PA, parents born PA, a Reading RR Brakeman Emma DONLEY, wife, age 33, born PA, parents born PA Harriet DONLEY, dau, age 13, born PA Elmer DONLEY, son, age 11, born PA Kathryn DONLEY, dau, age 9, born PA Berl DONLEY, son, age 6, born PA Marie DONLEY, dau, age 2 years + 11 months, born PA Katie BEAR, mother-in-law, age 56, a widow, born PA, parents born PA 1920 census of Lemoyne, PA: Lee B. BEAR, age 29, born PA, parents born PA, a Railway Electrician Martha BEAR, wife, age 29, born PA, parents born PA Edith BEAR, dau, age 9, born PA Lee K. B. BEAR, son, age 4 years + 7 months, born PA I am hoping to locate someone from this BEAR Family so that this precious old photograph can be returned to the care of their family. I've "rescued" and old photograph that is identified as Petter WERT of County Line, Pennsylvania. The photograph was taken at the C. S. Roshon Studio in Selinsgrove, PA, likely sometime in the 1860's or 1870's with Petter appearing to be in his 40's at the time it was taken. In addition to his name and location, someone has also written "& EMMERICK of Lower Augusta, PA" and "Like This" and "I Capis" on the back of the photograph. Based on limited research I believe that this is a photograph of Peter Bobb WERT b. 25 May 1833, the son of Michael WERT or WIRTH (b. 16 Mar 1798 in Northumberland, PA) and Lydia BOBB (b. 18 Jun 1809 in Northumberland, PA). Peter was one of 9 children born to this couple including, Peter; John B.; Sarah H.; Jonathan; Maria Anna; Elizabeth; Polly; Catharine; and Michael B. WERT all born between 1833 and 1849. Peter married Sarah EMERICH or EMERICK (b. 15 Dec 1839) on 6 Jan 1857 in Berrysburg, PA. The couple had 3 children including Mary A. Emerick; George L. Emerick; and Laura J. Emerick WERT all born between 1858 and 1864. I am hoping to locate someone from this family so that it can be returned to its rightful place, with family. If you are a member of this WERT Family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

Wondered if you had received a response to your query. Cindy, I think it is certainly reasonable to assume Buffinger could be Buffington. I am also researching the Werntz family. It is my brick wall. Joseph Hagy married Sarah E. Werntz. Sarah was born 1851. Joseph and Sarah lived in Harrisburg, Dauphin Co. I have been unable to find Sarah's parents or siblings. There was a Werntz family living in Pine Grove, Schuylkill Co. I thought perhaps they were Sarah's family. They had a Sarah but she is older but I'm still not ruling her out. I have never been able to find a marriage record for Sarah BUFFINGTON and anyone with the last name WERNTZ. However, during a trip to the Family History Library in April, I found a marriage record for a WERNTZ, J.A. and Miss BUFFINGER, from Kratztown. Hi Listers, I think that I may have finally knocked down a brick wall, but I would like to run it by you knowledgeable folks. I have been researching my ancestor James Oliver WERNTZ (b. Sept 1853) , son of Sarah "Sallie" BUFFINGTON, later TALLMAN (b. 1835 in Gratz). I have never been able to find a marriage record for Sarah BUFFINGTON and anyone with the last name WERNTZ. The marriage was performed in Pine Grove in Schuylkill County by Rev. Sapper. The date of the marriage was 11 Sep 1852. I guess what I am wondering is if it seems reasonable to assume that this Miss BUFFINGER could be my Sarah BUFFINGTON. I have lots on information on the BUFFINGTON line in Gratz, and later in Illinois, but absolutely nothing on my WERNTZ. I would appreciate any suggestions/comments. Thank you! Cindy
You found a letter dated 1844 floating around your house somewhere? Wow! Are there any more where that came from? Also let me know if you find some from or mentioning anyone named Weiss or Dehart. In case this early letter is of interest to any Dauphin County researchers... I found this transcription that I made from what I assume is a letter floating around my house somewhere. It was dated July 10, 1844 and was sent from Middletown, Dauphin Co, PA. It was sent to William Bailey in Springfield, Essex Co, NJ from Ann M. Shephard: "Dear Sir, I now address you by those f___(?) lines hoping they may find you all in good health as they leave me at present, thanks be to God for his great blessings. I received a letter from Mr. Shephard on the 8th of this month, dated the 23 and he requested me to write to you immediately and to learn when you intend to start for the West, as I should be very happy to have your company and William says he will meet us in St. Louis. I should have wrote sooner but I did not know where to direct to untill I have heard from William. Now if this reaches you, please write and let me know positively what day you will start as you will pass Middletown the same day and I would be happy to meet you there, as I feel very timmed (timid) to start alone. My little sis is got right again and I begin to think of starting. However, I would not care if it was the last of the month as I am in no hurry. Give my kind love to Mrs. Bailey and kiss ____ (bub?) for me. No more, but I remain yours respectfully. Ann M. Shephard When you write, direct to: Ann M. Shephard Middletown post office Dauphin County Pa in care of Aden Gross Please mention what train of cars you will come in as there is one comes in the morning and one in the afternoon. Do not neglect to write so I can be ready."
