The Underground Railroad in Perry County On Sunday, October 24, 2010, at 2:00 p.m., The Perry Historians will host a discussion of the Underground Railroad in Perry County, Pennsylvania. The county was the scene of much action on the "Underground Railroad" between 1830 and 1863. This informal network existed to aid fugitive slaves escaping to freedom. There were at least five "stations" in the county and many "agents" or "conductors" Ms. Janet Taylor will lead a discussion of the latest findings, including how to go about locating an Underground Railroad Station. Known and possible routes through the county will be explored, including the Juniata Division of the Pennsylvania Canal. Other topics will include Methodists and Mennonites, the sea shell thank you gift, and why secrecy was so important. This is an information sharing session, so any information at all about UGRR will be greatly appreciated! The program is FREE to all and will be held in the upstairs of the Hoverter Archives. Light refreshments will be served following the program. Feel free to visit The Perry Historians' website at www.ThePerryHistorians.org for more information about the facility, holdings, services and directions to library.
Calling all Rombergers, Rambergers, Rumbergers, Raumbergers, Rauchenbergers, Rambargers, Rombargers, and Rumbargers... The Romberger All-Family Reunion for August 21, 2010 at St. John's Lutheran in Berrysburg PA is drawing nearer, so it's time to make sure you respond if you haven't already. The favor of a reply by August 7 is greatly appreciated so the committee can make sure there's enough of the main dishes ordered :-) There's still time to have an info packet emailed to you which will allow you to reply and reserve. The person who will send it and reserve for you is Frank Herzel at fherzel@aol.com Additional information toward the bottom of this post covers directions, hotels and area attractions. Folks who can conveniently bring a covered dish are asked to do so. If you're able to arrive around 8:45 am and help set up a bit, thank you. Donations are requested to help cover costs and to ensure everyone who wants to come can. >From 9 to 10 there will be displays, and 10 to 12 is the family meeting in the church. At 1 lunch will be served in the covered outdoor pavilion. Afterwards folks who have worked in the past and new folks who wish to help in the future will have a short meeting to get to know one another. Like many family associations, ours can't rest on its laurels, but needs "new blood" - people to become and remain involved as current members mature and need assistance. People wonder "How do I know I'm related?" The answer is, if you are an American Romberger or descended from one (or one of the variation spellings), the odds are 99% that you are descended from our immigrant ancestor Bartholomaus Raumberger. He left plagues, droughts and big church taxes behind in Germany. A humble miller who rented his mill, he managed to buy passage for himself, his wife, and three kids, while sadly most people couldn't escape the poverty. In 1753, after a very long journey, he arrived in Philadelphia. The Romberger Family Association has been meeting since the 1980's in the acclaimed Romberger All-Family Reunion. The reunions focus on appreciating family, compiling and preserving family history, and building relationships to continue the reunion and genealogy traditions. Why do people come? Some to meet other Rombergers, others to share and get more of their genealogy. Some like the historic value of the church they're held in or the graveyard next door where many Romberger forebears rest. Some just like to eat and civilly party while hearing family history. Whatever the motivation, people have always turned out and had fun. Why is this year special? This is a rare changing of the guard as our founding historian, Dr. John Romberger retires and our new historian, Bob Averell steps up to the plate. This means you will have the benefit of two fine minds to pick if you're working on genealogy. ___________________________________ AREA ACCOMMODATIONS Harrisburg has a lot of hotels, and there's bed and breakfasts around too. The church does not have a street address to plug into GPS devices, nor do we presently have coordinates for it. St. John's Lutheran Church, also known as the "Hill Church" is on Route 225 1 mile south of Berrysburg. Thus, here's how to utilize Google to get you there: Go to http://www.google.com/ Type in - st john's lutheran church elizabethville, pa Click "Maps" in the upper left corner To the left will be "Point A" St John's Lutheran Church. At the bottom of the pale blue box, click "Directions". A new box appears with two text lines in it. On line "A" if anything is there, clear it out and put in the address from which you're coming with commas between sections from like this: 810 n. main st., chestnutville, pa Click "Get Directions" The map to the right will show the route, and printed word directions will be to the left. NOTE: As of this writing, ROUTE 225 is under construction between Elizabethville and Berrysburg but is presently open. In the event it is closed on reunion day, follow the detour signs, or consider Route 25 from Millersburg to Berrysburg instead. ____________________________________ So in summary, if you might want to come, please email Frank at fherzel@aol.com today for more info, and try to get him your reply ASAP! Let's give Dr. Romberger, the outgoing founder, a warm send-off and show him that the over 30 years he has invested in our family, history and reunions will continue. Hope to see you there!
My ggg-grandfather James Johnson/Johnston was born 1748, probably in the part of Lancaster County that eventually formed Dauphin County. He had a son Gawen or Gavin or Gaven who died in Warren Co OH prior to 1839. I am wondering if the person listed below might have been the father of James Johnson, or an uncle or some other relative. Pennsylvania Archives 3rd Series Vol 24 that lists: Warranties of Land Lancaster County PA Gawen Johnson Date of Survey Dec. 3, 1753 25 Acres If anyone has further information or resources on this family, I would appreciate hearing from you. David, This is all I have in my file. He is a sibling to someone in my extended family. Actually there are 2 different ones and I have very little on either. I have a Michael born Dec 9, 1784 and baptized in Bindnagle Church. His father was John and his mother was Anna Margaret Minnich (with many different spellings including Muench) He had siblings baptized there - Elizabeth 1781, John 1783, Margaret 1788 and John-Jacob 1790. Another Michael Zimmerman in Bindnagles was Michael Zimmerman )1725-1808) with Spouse Eva Koenig. Their children were Hannah 1752, Johanns 1756, Johann-Adam 1757, Eva-Katharina 1761, Godfried 1763 and Maria-Elizabeth 1767. (This one I have not connected but it is possible he is the grandfather of the Michael who was born in 1884 as his father is Johannes who was born in 1756 but I have not proven it.) I have this information because of the Minnich family and also because my gr grandmother's sister married into the Zimmerman clan. Please let me know if any of this fits and maybe we can co-ordinate families. I would like to know if it does. My dead end is my great grandfather George Snyder. I'd like to determin his parents and siblings. My current research is focused on widow Mary Snyder (Snider) listed in Middletown in the census years of 1830 and 1840. She has a son listed of the right age range to be my great grandfather George Snyder born June 1823 in PA. George and Elizabeth's household is listed in the 1850 Census of Dauphin Co. in So. Hanover Twp. If widow Mary is indeed the mother of my George, then George has a brother near his age (5-10 in 1830), a brother 8-13 years older than George, and another brother 13-23 years older than George. The John Snyder listed in George's 1860 Monroe Co., Michigan household, age 60, fits a son of Mary listed as age 20 - 30 in Mary's 1830 household. The 1850 Census of Middletown lists a Simon Snyder household, Simon age 25, which would fit as a younger brother of my George. George is 27 in 1850. Questions: 1) Was Mary born in Germany? 2) What was her husband's name and was he born in Germany? 3) Did Mary have a son George born in 1823? 4) Was the 1860 John Snyder also Mary's son? Bob Snyder in Michigan

Dave, the land was located in East Hanover township. Today the land is in Lebanon County. 1785 was the year Dauphin was split off from Lancaster County and these transactions were after the split. Actually Michael Brown's mill was one of the reference points that defined the new Dauphin/Lancaster border. I have copies of the transcribed deeds on my computer and I would be happy to email them to you if you wish. There were three separate parcels sold by the widow (Ann Brown) and their son, Michael Jr. Neil E. In a message dated 7/31/2010 12:41:38 P.M. On tax list of 1783 a Christopher Ackerman listed as "inmate" in Lebanon twp-Lancaster co. In 1785 Christopher Ackermans name appeared on a petition re the location of the county seat of Dauphin co. In 1786 Christophers name on tax list again as inmate in East Hanover twp In 1787 his name again listed on tax list and as "inmate" for Lebanon twp. Have lost track of him after the 1787 tax list. Would appreciate any help or guidance to help me locate more information re Christopher Ackerman or spellings Auckerman/Aggerman/Akeman. Our family Bible shows only information of Stophel Ackerman/Auckerman who married Elizabeth ??? and had their first born child a son(John) somewhere in Pa in 1786.. Have been following up info regarding a Chris Akeman who was a Hessian soldier captured in 1777 and farmed out to a Archibald Sloan in East Hanover twp-Dauphin coun ty. He deserted in 1778-maybe he returned to the Dauphin co area. There was a Christopher Ackerman in the Westmoreland co. Pa=same time period but do not belive same person. Have also found in 1810 census a Stophel Ackerman in Northumberland co., Pa and 1820 census a Stophel Ockerman in Allegheny co, Pa. Same person?? Any help or assistance will be greatly appreciated. Margaret, Thank you for your response. I would be interested in anything you have on Michael Zimmerman as I have been collecting bits and pieces of that name for many years. If you have anything on Michael and his brother's parents, include that also. My Michael Zimmerman was married to an Elizabeth, if that helps anything.
