Marriage Records for Dauphin County are at the Dauphin County County Court House. I don't remember if it was the Register of Wills Office or the Office Court. I think they started about 1885 and were stored in the basement and we had to make our own copies. Hope this helps Ray IN NC -----Original Message----- From: elizabeth Sent: Wednesday, March 30, 2011 10:20 PM To: padauphi@rootsweb.com Subject: [PADAUPHI] obtain marriage records for Harrisburg? The only legitimate one I know of is the Department of Vital Records from the State and their birth and death certificates didn't start till 1906. Not sure about marriage. The only city in the State of Pennsylvania to have their own and earlier is Philadelphia. There were some birth and death records in mid 1800's by state of Pa., but very small amount. These I found at Pa. State Archives. If your handy to Harrisburg, you can order these birth & death certificates of 1906 on from the Dept of Health & Welfare Building at Foster & 7th street for I think it's $7 per certificate. I only have experience with probate and land records in Dauphin County. The county courthouse (Front & Market Streets in Harrisburg) are very organized (with index books, self-serve microfilm machines, etc.) and the clerks are very helpful, so searching is relatively quick and easy. They will have records only from 1785. I'd rank the historical society in Harrisburg second: limited hours, transcribed church records on in-house database, Harrisburg directories, and very helpful staff. It may take a bit more time here to sort through their holdings. I'd leave the state library for a trip with more time. It's too big and I couldn't find any staff specifically knowledgeable about genealogy. There do have Dauphin county newspapers on microfilm, however, but it takes time to request and review them. Good luck, Jackie D.
Probate, Deeds, were still in downtown Lancaster at the Court House. Indexes to those records are at either Lancaster County Historical Society _http://www.lancasterhistory.org/_ (http://www.lancasterhistory.org/) along with a multitude of Church Records. If your ancestors were Mennonite? There is a separate Historical Society I think called Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, yes _http://www.lmhs.org/_ (http://www.lmhs.org/) Dauphin County was founded in 1785. The older court records for Dauphin county 1785-1900 abt. I think are at the Pa. State Archives building in Harrisburg. In a message dated 3/30/2011 4:02:29 P.M. They left PA for OH circa 1798-1800. I will likely be needing to search probate and land records both for both periods prior to 1785 and after. My priority focus is my maternal ggg-grandfather James Johnston born 1738. I would love to find evidence of my James Johnston's parents. He is possibly connected with the Gawen or Gavin Johnston who was issued a land warrant in Lancaster County in 1753, as my ggg-grandfather also had a son named Gawen Any suggestions on what resources are available and how and where I can best spend my time would be most appreciated. I would also like to know what he has to say. There are a couple of brick walls in my family and I live in Kansas. My 5th Gr. Grandfather Martin Brandt was from Dauphin & Cumberland Co. Pa. so that is why I am on your list, always hoping to learn more about the Brandt family. You have some very interesting workshops. Thanks for any help you can give. Hello Fellow Listers: Have you ever heard the term "Pow-Wow" or the practice of "Pow-Wowing"? Do you know what a "Pow-Wow doctor" does? Or what is done during a "Pow-Wow"? 3rd Annual "On the Trail of Perry County History" hosted by The Perry Historians on Saturday, March 26, 2011. There was such a great interest shown by our "tour-goers" last year, as we toured the path of the Newport and Shermans Valley Railroad, that fellow members Harry Focht and Steve Metzger agreed to do research on and map out the route of the Perry County Railroad... which, during the same time, was in great competition with the Newport and Shermans Valley Railroad to cross Perry County. Our newest On the Trail of Perry County History Tour will follow the Perry County Railroad route from its beginning in Duncannon to its end in Landisburg. We will also be investigating several other places of historic interest, including the Millerstown area in conjunction with our African American History project which fellow member and volunteer, Janet Taylor is diligently working on. We'll be gathering at the East Parking Lot at Little Buffalo State Park (near Shoaff's Mill and the dam area) by no later than 7:45 a.m.. Bus pulls out at 8:00 a.m. sharp! All persons must be aboard a bus - NO Cars! Lunch will be served by the New Bloomfield Lutheran Church and will consist of baked chicken breast and scalloped potatoes, dessert and beverage. Deadline for reservations in March 3, 2011. Seating is limited to 47 persons and will be filled on a first-come first-served basis. Wear comfortable shoes - as there may be some walking. Cost for the trip - which includes the meal is $30.00 per person. Payment must be made in the form of a check. For more information or a reservation form, please e-mail me at Donna@ThePerryHistorians.org.
