Hello Fellow Listers: The Perry Historians is once again sponsoring a bus tour through Perry County... this year the subject is Mills. If you are interested in receiving a registration form, please reply to me by e-mail and I will send you the page in a .doc file. Please note that there is very limited seating (we are only accepting 48 riders total and the seats are filling fast). Donna Heller Zinn volunteer / director of The Perry Historians ************************************ 4th Annual "On the Trail of Perry County History" Bus Tour Gristmills of Perry County It's time once again for our Annual "On the Trail of Perry County History" Bus Tour. This year the tour subject will be Gristmills of Perry County. Gary Eby has graciously volunteered to help us coordinate this year's tour. For those who are unfamiliar, Gary is the son of Ruth Eby and the late Eugene Eby, author of the book, Perry County Gristmills. Our tour date is scheduled for Saturday, March 24, 2012. We will meet at the east area of Little Buffalo State Park and tour the beautifully refurbished Shoaff's Mill. From there, we will board the bus and continue on to stop at several additional sites including Wentzel's Bridgeport Mill as well as a few mills that have been out of use for quite some time. We will also be driving by several abandoned mill sites along the route. Please note: Most of the mills have steep steps and are not handicap accessible. Tour goers should keep in mind that the buildings we will be visiting are not museums. Therefore, it is NOT recommended to wear one's "Sunday Best" and sturdy, comfortable footwear is a must. The cost of each ticket will be $35.00. This includes bus fare and lunch, which will be served by St. Paul's Church at Andersonburg. On the menu is ham with all the trimmings and lots of home-made desserts. Reservations are DUE BY Wednesday, March 7th. But don't wait until the last minute, this one is sure to fill up fast and space is limited. Spaces will be filled on a first come - first served basis with the postmark date on the reservation / payment envelope being used. Please remember that all tourists MUST be on board the bus. For safety, we can have NO CARS following in convoy fashion. The tour of Shoaff's Mill will begin promptly at 8:30 am. Please plan to be there 15 minutes early to check in so that we may start the tour on time and be able to proceed to our next stop on schedule. For questions, contact Steve Metzger at fcfc@pa.net or (717) 567-9110. Or you may call the library during the weekdays from 9:00-2:00 or on Wednesdays from 10:00-7:00 at (717) 582-4896. If there is no answer, please do not attempt to leave a message on the answering machine, but do try to call back at another time.
I no longer use or check this email address. I also recommend that any other netzero users be very careful if/when attempting to stop any recurring charges. You may reach me at ginhelm@gmail.com. Thanks! Virginia

IF you had family that stayed in the general area for generations as my paternal line did you might really enjoy mapping out their various lands and deeds w/a program called DeedMapper.
Draw out the property as it is described on the deed, on graph paper. If you can find a property map of the township that shows the property lines, you may be able to place it, even if the map isn't from the same time period. Also pay attention to who the neighbors were; it usually says. Hello. I live in Dauphin Co., and I'm planning on visiting the CH (to help some people with their genealogy). However, I don't know how the _county_ and _state_ records are organized. I checked several websites that I figured would have such info - no help. So, are the state records in the same building as the county records? Or, how are they organized? What's the website for PA's (i.e. state) records? If someone that knows the layout lives nearby, I'd really like to meet you there. My lookup offer! I *plan* to go on Tuesday, 22 Nov. I am offering, to anyone that lives too far away to visit, to find records. (This could include copying, and sending it to you.) Note that I emphasized 'plan'; if not now, it'll be soon (but perhaps next year). Of course, I'll charge you my cost plus a bit for my effort. If the county and state records are held separately, I may have to go to both. Be aware that, if I get overloaded, I'll have to reject some requests.
My greatuncle Earl Porter Ayers was injured on June 29, 1972 when he was with a crew at the Market Street sewage pumping station trying to restart the pumps. Apparently there was gasoline fumes and a spark. The crew had to run through the flames to get out. Earl Ayers died July 3, 1972 of his burns. I have a copy of the "The Patriot The Evening News" of June 30, 1972 describing the accident, with a handwritten note about the day he died. What I don't know is where he was buried. Could someone be kind and find his obituary and let me know what cemetery he is buried in? His one remaining sister has no idea where he is buried. Thanks, Triste Elliott --- If you can't get rid of them ugly old skeletons in the closet, at least teach 'em how to dance funny. Billy C. Wirtz
I saw the following listing on eBay and am hoping it will be helpful to someone researching this family from Dauphin County, PA. I have no connection with the seller or the site. Jean Masco "FOR SALE IS ONE LARGE ANTIQUE FAMILY BIBLE, "THE PARALLEL BIBLE" CONTAINING THE AUTHORIZED AND REVISED VERSIONS ARRANGED IN PARALLEL COLUMNS. IT IS WELL ILLUSTRATED AND CONTAINS GUSTAVE DORE ILLUSTRATIONS ALONG WITH OTHERS. MEASURES 12 3/4" H X 10 1/2" W X 4 1/4" THICK. WEIGHS 14 LBS. THIS BIBLE BELONGED TO A KELLY FAMILY FROM WICONISCO, PA. JOHN KELLY MARRIED SARAH ROW IN OCT. 1883. JOHN KELLY WAS BORN IN 1855, HIS WIFE SARAH IN 1861. SARAH DIED IN 1901. CHILDREN, I BELIEVE, WERE HARRY, BERTHA, EMMA, AND HARVEY. THERE IS A FAMILY TEMPERANCE PLEDGE PAGE IN BRIGHT COLOR TO PLEDGE ABSTAINING FROM THE USE OF ALL INTOXICATING DRINKS AS A BEVERAGE. I HAD THE FRONT AND BACK PAGES REINFORCED AT A BINDERY. THERE ARE SOME STAINS ON THE TOPS OF A FEW OF THESE PAGES WHICH LOOKS LIKE A DYE RUN. I'M THINKING IT MAY HAVE BEEN SOMETHING USED AT THE BINDERY. THERE WAS ONE PAGE REPAIRED BECAUSE IT STUCK TO THE FIRST OF THE PORTRAIT PAGES. THE PRESENTATION PAGE IN THE FRONT OF THE BOOK IS NOT WRITTEN IN. THE MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE PAGE IS FILLED IN, ALSO BIRTHS AND DEATHS, BUT NOT MARRIAGE, MEMORANDA, OR THE TEMPERANCE PLEDGE PAGE. THE BIBLE IS IN SOLID CONDITION, LEATHER SHOWS A LITTLE WEAR BUT IS STILL VERY GOOD. THE CLASPS WORK VERY WELL. THIS BIBLE IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION FOR ITS AGE. ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK. ALSO INCLUDED ARE SOME OLD PHOTOGRAPHS (INCLUDING A TIN TYPE) AND OTHER ITEMS THAT WERE IN THE BIBLE. THIS WILL WEIGH 16 LBS WITH PACKING. $2.75 WILL BE INCLUDED IN POSTAGE AS A HANDLING FOR INSURANCE. I DO NOT CHARGE FOR PACKING OR HANDLING." http://www.ebay.com/itm/ANTIQUE-FAMILY-BIBLE-ILLUSTRATED-G-DORE-1885-KELLY-ROW-WICONISCO-PA-/290625161948?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43aa9c0adc#ht_500wt_1069
Not sure what the cost or procedure is these days. I discovered that my grandparents marriage license was taken out in Dauphin County (where he lived, not the bride). The records are on the computer so when I called re information, they could tell me in a minute that it was there. I send a $5 bill through the mail (twice actually as I lost the first one), and the copy was sent to me. I believe the Recorder of Wills has the records - can't remember exactly. I'd suggest calling the offices in the County Courthouse to verify that it is available and what the cost is. These folks have always been very helpful to me. Don't know anything about divorce records but these folks should be able to tell you where to locate those records. Happy hunting.
