    3. Thanks--looks like Cumberland would have been 13 x 15.5. This will certainly help. 1. [Dauphin Co PA] BIXLER - SIMONTON Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Laura BIXLER SIMONTON which was taken at the Lenney Studio in Newport, Pennsylvania. I believe the photograph was taken in the 1880's and that Laura was probably in her teens or 20's at the time. Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding Laura and her family: Laura E. BIXLER was b. 1861 in Perry Co., PA to parents Jacob BIXLER (b. 26 Aug 1834-1895) and Eleanor LYONS (b. 21 Nov 1836 in PA-1882). Laura was one of 11 children born to this couple including, Jerome Riley; Joseph Fillmore; Laura E.; Lewis; David Lyons; Sarah Jennie; Mary Magdalena; Susan or Elsie; Alice Anna; Emma; and Jacob BIXLER, all born between 1857 and 1879. Laura married Calvin E. SIMONTON (b. Jul 1865 in Harrisburg, PA son of Hamilton & Elizabeth SIMONTON) and together they had a son, Paul B. SIMONTON b. 1895. Laura died in 1943 and is buried at the East Harrisburg Cemetery in Harrisburg, PA. Son Paul died in 1968. Census records provide the following details: 1870 census of Saville Township, PA: Jacob BIXLER, age 35, a Farmer, born PA Ellen BIXLER, age 34, Keeps House, born PA Jerome BIXLER, age 12, born PA Joseph BIXLER, age 10, born PA Laura BIXLER, age 8, born PA David BIXLER, age 6, born PA Sarah BIXLER, age 4, born PA Mary BIXLER, age 2, born PA Susan BIXLER, age 1, born PA And living directly next door - Henry & Sarah BIXLER and their 6 children 1880 census of New Bloomfield, PA: Laura BIXLER, age 18, a Domestic Servant, born PA, parents born PA I am hoping to locate someone from Laura's family so that this wonderful old treasure can be returned to the care of her family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    2. Nora Avery
    3. I have a digital version of F.W. Beers, & Co. 1872 Atlas. This one happens to be of Cumberland Co. Pennsylvania, but the question I'm asking could apply to any county. What was the original size of it in paper form? (8.5 x 11 seems too small to read the history of the county, but I'm not sure what the size would have been.) I am asking because I'm trying to convert the scale of miles (20 rods to the inch) to gauge how far a piece of property is from an intersection. If I knew how big the paper used to publish the book was then I could calculate everything out. Thank you. Nora

    2. Thanks for the quick reply David. I too am retired. First from USN then University of North Florida then Lowe's Corporation.  Guess that makes me a triple dipper.  Like you I am pretty sure I am retired for good this time. None of the names you mentioned are in my tree as far as I know so far but you never know when a cousin will appear. Glad you picked up the dauphin list. 3. Rich Lowe, have we ever corresponded before on some of the surnames you are looking for? I sent someone ( from Iowa) photographs of Crains, McCords, Sawyer from East Hanover Twp. and the Old Hanover Church, also some photos from the old Derry Presbyterian Church cemetery at Hershey. My uncle is one of the trustees of the old Hanover Church cemetery. I have asked him about old, old records. He says they don't know what became of them. I wonder who "holds" records for the Presbyterian denomination. 3. I think you did, Beverly send me that info. While I don't find your email in a search of past messages, I do know some kind lady sent me gravestone photos and even a booklet and other copies of records. It's been quite a few years ago now but they were most helpful in many ways. They helped me get this far but now I really want to know who the parents were and siblings. I'm hoping to learn from those on this list my best options for on-site research while in the area. Where best to go and what to find there. The historical society, for example, or directly to the courthouses? And why? Thanks again for helping a stranger many moons ago! I am a GenWeb volunteer back in Iowa and have been for more than a decade so know that helping others with their research needs often is repayment for similar help coming from the other direction. 3. I'm planning a research trip east in mid-September and plan to have a couple days to do some digging on my maternal Johnson/Johnston line. I would appreciate some guidance from those who have done on-site research in the area regarding where I can best spend my limited time while in the area. My earliest known direct ancestor from this line was my ggg-grandfather James Johnson aka Johnston, b. 1748 PA? d. 1836 OH (his wife Mary McCord b. 1753 PA? d 1843 OH). They lived in the West Hanover part of Lancaster County that eventually became Dauphin County in 1785 . Allied families included Crain or Crean, McCord and Sawyer. All of those surnames appear within a census page of each other in the 1790 Dauphin Co Federal Census in "unidentified township". All of those families that made up my line moved on to Warren Co OH around 1800, then to Fountain Co IN in the late 1820s and some on to Iowa in the late 1830s where my Johnson line goes back my to gg-grandfather William Johnson (son of James and Mary) who is buried just a few miles from my home. Would probate records up until 1785 be in Lancaster County or would they have ended up in Dauphin County records? What other records am I overlooking that could lead to their parents? My James Johnston's father could have died before or after 1785 so I suspect I'll need to search both areas IF probate, land records, church records etc stayed with the original county. I would welcome some guidance and suggestions which might help my chances of success during be visit there. Thanks in advance for any help. Rich Lowe

If you need any help with a list operation problem, please contact me at any time by writing to the Admin's address in my signature lines below, or simply post it to the list if it pertains to appropriate genealogy or history of general interest to other subscribers. 1. [PADAUPHI] Shoop's Church
    2. Ray Rhoads
    3. Is there anyone on the list that has a copy of the book “Records of Shoops Church” by Frederick S Weiser that would be able to do a look up for me? I am interested in anyone with the surname of Ressel or Russel that might appear in the records of the church prior to 1882. I have tried to get a copy through inter-library loan but the only library that has it will not participate in inter-library loan. Ray Rhoads

    1. [PADAUPHI] Fw: question about Adda Jane Patterson
    2. Donna Heller Zinn
    3. Hello Fellow Listers: The below forwarded request was received by The Perry Historians. I was able to find a brief death notice in the Perry County Democrat dated 15-Aug-1945 for Adda Jane Patterson and seen that she and her parents were to be residing in Royalton, Dauphin County. Since the lists do not allow attachments, I will transcribe the death notice as found: Perry County Democrat - 15-Aug-1945 The sad news of the death of Miss Adda Jane Patterson, 31, of Royalton, was received here Sunday by her uncle, Amose Dum. She was Lt. (jg.) in the Navy and was transferred from New York City to Seattle, Wash. and was killed ina train wreck at Michigan, North Dakota, Thursday. Surviving her are her parents, William and Mary Dum Patterson, a sister Betty, Mrs. John Rhinesmith, Royalton, and a brother, William Patterson of the Medical Corps, France. She was a graduate of Bucknell University and received her Master Degree at Columbia University and was a teacher in the Middletown High School before joining the Waves almost three years ago. The family, formerly from Landisburg have the sincere sympathy of all in their sad bereavement. Funeral arrangements not known yet. Burial will be in the Landisburg Cemetery. (note: I did not find a tombstone transcript for Adda in the Landisburg Cemetery, so presume she may in fact be buried in Dauphin County???) I'm hoping that the word will get to Adda's relatives through this notice. I live in Michigan, ND. In 1945, we had a train crash here that killed 34 people. Adda Jane Patterson (1913-1945) was one of them. She is buried in the Landisburg, PA Cemetery. I am trying hard to find her surviving relatives. I would like to invite them to the dedication ceremony of the new granite monument that our community club recently purchased in memory of the train crash. The dedication will be held on July 21st, 2012. Could you please help me? > > I would very much appreciate it. > > Maria Vasichek > Michigan, ND > 701 259-2289 > grinch@polarcomm.com >

    2. Nora Avery
    3. Am seeing descendants of Benjamin Hoffer Lutz (b1873-d?) who married Lydia Viola Farner (b1876-d?) They lived in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, had about 10 or 11 children. Some of their children moved to Dauphin County and other parts of PA. Would like to touch base with someone of this line to fill in some gaps. Thank you. Nora -- Nora Avery Florida

    1. [PADAUPHI] Maude Towson of Harrisburg
    2. Libby Frank
    3. Hello! I am trying to locate information on my great-great-grandfather's sister, Maude Towson (also spelled Towsen). Her parents were Charles Towson and Frances Tarr, and the siblings who lived to adulthood were: Charles W., Edward C., Thomas Walton, George Henry, and May Emma. Charles, Edward, and George were born in Baltimore 1869-1881, but George and May were born in Harrisburg. I do not know where she was born, or when. She appears in an 1889 city directory of Harrisburg alongside her father and brother, Charles W., as "Towsen, Maude, trimmer, 334 Market, h 1038 S Cameron". I don't know whether she appears in any other city directories, but I would be happy to know. I also have several newspaper references from Baltimore that appear to be about her. Right after her mother's dead in 1911, a "Mrs. Maud Hirsch is the guest of her father Charles Towson." This is at the same time as Thomas was visiting his father. Later, in 1916, she was referred to as Mrs. John H. Sell of New York, though it said she lived in Harrisburg. In her father's 1919 obituary, she was called "Mrs. John Seel of Des Moines, Iowa". I also found a couple of newspaper references that may or may not be her, that refer to a scandal where a "Maud Towson" married an already married man named Gustav(e) Herzig. She claims he convinced her to marry him, he claims she drugged him. He also says that he was picked up by her brother Edward, taken to her father's home (in one article called James) at 1401 S 11th St. (at the time, my Towsons were living at 1401 S Cameron) and introduced to a "Brother Bill" (all the articles referred to him with quotes) before being beaten. Maude later had him arrested in New Jersey (where they were married) for bigamy. In one of the articles, Gustav claimed that it was all a conspiracy by his competitor (who, Gustav claimed, had feelings for Maude) David Hirsch. If anyone can provide me any information on Maude, I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you! Libby
