I believe it means - literally - "in the state of celebacy" - and generally, "unmarried." At least that is what I found in my internet search. Since the father and mother have different last names, it appears the parents of this child were not married. ----- Original Message ----- Hello Fellow Listers: I'm hoping someone may be able to "translate" the following phrase which was within the record of a baptism.... which I'll transcribe below. Nancy, FWIW, your explanation was appreciated but not really necessary, and for the record I only got your last post to the list ONCE. Not sure where the supposed duplicate one went, but it never showed up in the inbox of the grumpy ol' List Admin. I get duplicate messages in my inbox every now and then though, and I still have no idea what causes them or what (if anything) to do about them so I usually just ignore them. In your case though, I never received any duplicate so it's a non-issue. :-) Sometimes I think the gremlins in the lines just do that to stir things up. LOL David E. Hi- My gg grandfather was John Hager b. 1816 in Frantz and married to first to Margaret Gorias d/o Henry Gorius. They lived in Tamaqua, Schulkill Co. He married 2nd to Maria Homan. Her first marriage was to Daniel? Donahue. The first son for John Sr. and Margaret was, John Jr.who was b 7/11/1841. He married Sarah Ellen b. 1857 and moved to Steelton, Dauphin Co. : Their first son was Ross O. Hager b. 1879/ who married Martha. Ross and Martha had a daughter, Mary b. 1899. The second child of John Jr. and Sarah was John H. Hager b. 1883, d. 1932. John III. lived at 251 Swatora, in Steelton. I have no records of a marriage. I got his address from his draft registry for WWl in 1918. The address on it was that of his mother and was 422 Swatora. I don't know if he fought in the War. He is buried Baldwin Cem. The third child of John and Sarah was Anna Elizabeth, b. 1887 who married John W. Thompson, b. 1887 and they had a son, Richard R. Thompson. It would be very interesting to hear from some of my Hager relatives. John Hager Jr. was one of four brothers and two sisters. My g- grandmother, Mary Louise Hager, one sister, was married to Jacob Aaron Frantz. They also lived in Tamaqua. I've seen the house where John Sr. lived and heard lots of family stories. Regards Nancy

I need help finding a family in the 1870 census. I just need to check on who were their children. I don't currently have my Ancestry subscription. In Ancestry and at Familysearch, I cannot find the family at all in the 1870 census, which means probably the name was mangled or something. Conceivably they were moving around, if they had sold their land and were living with children. The people I'm looking for are Jacob Weiss (Wise, Weise), b 1806 or 1802 in Switzerland, married by 1838, married Johanna Susanna (sometimes called Susanna), who was born in 1809 in Germany. Jacob died in 1887, and Johanna died in 1875. They owned a large plot of land in Highspire, which was listed interchangeably in the census as Lower Swatara Township, in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Jacob was a rug/ carpet weaver, and he wove rugs on his loom while working in the railway station as a ticket agent. His land was along the railroad tracks. To my knowledge, they had as many as nine children born by 1856. I'm interested in the later children. In 1880 Jacob lived with his daughter Sarah Conklin in Steelton. There was one child in particular, Alice Johanna, born 20 Oct 1856, for whom 4 people on Ancestry have her as the daughter of her sister Sarah. I already proved that in 1860 she was Alice Johanna Weiss, b 1857, and lived in the Weiss household; no Alice Johanna Conklin existed in her alleged family in the 1860 census, and Sarah didn't even marry until 1860. She'd have been 14 in 1870, PROBABLY not married, even in this family, and it would be good to know where she was living. Mind, members of related families were found working as servants at that age, and no, their parents were not in a position to need help making a living. There is also a Clara or Clarrissa Alice who evidently belonged to one of these families. I saw a photo of her - but nothing that placed her in a family, and the name rings a bell. It is possible that she did not survive childhood. Now, on locating Alice in the 1870 census, I can't find a single Conklin in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, in the 1870 census, and they were certainly there, very likely either in Highspire or in Steelton (on census these places sometimes morphed into Lower Swatara Township). I mean, even without an Ancestry subscription I should be able to get it to print out what Conklins lived in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. It can't find any. So I also need help finding the Conklins. They weren't having a census revolt in Steelton and Highspire in 1870, were they? Thanks! Yours, Dora Smith

Maxine, I don't know how my Books line connects to yours. I'm stuck at my ancestor Jacob, 1815-1891, buried at Middletown Cemetery. I've found a brother Daniel buried at Highspire, and a brother David buried at Churchville. Am trying to find father for Jacob, Daniel and David and probably several other siblings (Jacob's obit states he was from a large family). Perhaps Cyrus is a cousin (he can't be a brother to my Jacob). Have you been able to find out any more about your George Books who married Christiana? Do you know anything about a Peter Books born ca. 1780?
