I also appreciate the clue that Henry moved to Richland Co. Several people are looking at this line. We knew that his brother, John Meyer(s), of Centre Co PA traveled to Ohio shortly before his death in 1881, and there's been a lot of speculation about where in Ohio and who he was visiting. Perhaps one of Henry's children? Thomas H. Robinson (on page 15 of my copy) a paragraph reads: -- 1788. On the 13th of May the Presbytery of Carlisle met at Hanover. Present -- Rev. Messrs. John Elder, John Hoge, John Linn, John Craighead, Robert Cooper and Samuel Waugh, with James Johnston, edler. Upon the next day, May 14, 1788, James Snodgrass was ordained and installed as pastor of the Hanover congregation. Rev. John Craighead presided and gave the charge, and the Rev. John Linn preached the sermon from II Cor. IV, 5.-- Here's where I need some help with the section that says "with James Johnston, edler. This James Johnston was most likely my 3g-grandfather b. 1748 or his father who I suspect may have also been named James. My 3g-grandfather James also had a son James but this James would have been only 3 years old in 1788. When I read this paragraph for the first time some years ago, I made a note that he was an "edler of the church". With all persons mentioned but him ministers and he a church elder. But in reading it again, could this use of "edler" possibly mean this was James Johnston, not to be confused with his son by the same name? This may be obvious to those reading this but I'd appreciate some others takes on this. Thanks. Rich Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It is not always true that they went close to home. I remember reading that families walked over 5 miles to go to church as there was not one in or near their town. they walked to the next town every Sunday to attend church. I don't know how far apart these churches were. People sometimes had special events conducted at a church farther away for specific reasons. For instance, my brother in law has actual ancestors who rowed a rowboat from County Antrim across the Irish Sea to Scotland to have their children baptized, and I guess also to receive Communion (my guess is not every Sunday). Then they rowed back to Ireland. I don't know how far people travelled to go to church but in those days people were committed to ministers or denominations or church in general and would work harder to get there than you or I would. My Smith ancestors used to harness their one wagon to their one horse, stick all 7 children in it, and travel 12 miles to the nearest Presbyterian church. The Baptist one wouldn't do.
