Hi Dora: Interesting story about the Murray's. I am descended from Johannes Kohlmann of Lykens Twp so I keep up with the Dauphin county list. And I live here in Athol, Massachusetts...founded around 1730 and named after John Murray, from Blair Atholl Scotland, who was one of the land holders when the town was incorporated in 1762. We have had many visits from the Duke of Atholl over the history of the town, including the Dukes , their families, and members of the Atholl Highlanders, the last private standing army in Europe. You might try writing to the Athol Historical Society to see if they have any Murray family history. I am a bit doubtful of the religious persecution angle for the Murray's, though. If you have an army of Highlanders (the size of a batallion or so) you might not have to worry about persecution.... It's likely the family has been Church of England or Presbyterian since the family has been active in the Grand Lodge of Scotland ever since the 2nd Duke of Atholl, who was also a Grand Master of Scotland. It's been a great friendship between the two towns, but I don't know if any of the Murray family still lives here. Fun history for a little factory town in central Mass.! ---- Dora Smith <tiggernut24@yahoo.com> wrote: > I am looking for information on the origins and first three generations of a > MURRAY family that came with a small group of Scotch Irish settlers from > Ireland or Scotland, more likely Ireland, and settled in the 1730's on > Swatara Creek, in the town of Hannover, in Dauphin or Lebanon County. > > For one thing the first three generations of the family seem to be > completely confused in the online genealogies. > > for another, a member of this family, born at any of several points in time > with several purported parents, who ended up in Alamance (Orance) County, > North Carolina, may have been of this family. I am looking for information on the origins and first three generations of a MURRAY family that came with a small group of Scotch Irish settlers from Ireland or Scotland, more likely Ireland, and settled in the 1730's on Swatara Creek, in the town of Hannover, in Dauphin or Lebanon County. For one thing the first three generations of the family seem to be completely confused in the online genealogies. for another, a member of this family, born at any of several points in time with several purported parents, who ended up in Alamance (Orance) County, North Carolina, may have been of this family. Name of William, and he married Elizabeth, a daughter of James Murray from Maryland. His descendant's Y DNA matches that of a Maryland family but that could be for several reasons including the Swatara family were related to them. Also, there's a rumor running around among the members of the Murray DNA Project, group 5, that this group of families descends from the Earls of Athol by one of several routes. I'm interested in how widespread this notion was among the emigrant ancestors of the people who share this Y DNA. I want to know if the Swatara Murray family ever carried such a story (and not merely if some descendants of it have become attached to such a story recently). A current tennis champion who is descended from Robert Murray, of the Swatara family, states that his father was a member of the family of the Earls of Athol and fled religious persecution, which is a different variation than the similar story told by descendants of James Murray of Baltimore. Thanks! Yours, Dora Smith

John Wilhelm born 1818 is in the 1850 and 1860 Conoy Twp Lancaster County censuses. He is married to Elizabeth born 1825 in PA. Based on the age of their children I figure the married 1844-45. In 1848 John is in Bainbridge renting from a John Smith (true!). I have no clue to who his parents are. There are Wilhelms in Dauphin Co. There are elgible Wilhelm families in Dauphin Co. Is one of them the parents of John. John Wilhelm's daughter Anna b. 1854 married Jacob H. Meckley about 1878 and lived in Conoy Twp. John and Elizabeth's oldest child in 1850 is Mary 3 yrs old. MY REPLY I have both Wilhelm and Smith in my data base. I don't have John Wilhelm but I do possibly have the line he came from. The funny thing about this is that I was having the house recarpeted and had to dig out all my files, etc. and move the furniture. Rolled up in the desk was a paper from 1933 compiled by Harry E. Wilhelm, that had the Wilhelm family from Jacob who came from Germany. Jacob had three children with Elizabeth Fischer and then decided to return to Germany leaving his family behind. She got a divorce. ------------------------------- Catherine, their daughter m. Michael Smith (I don't have him with my Smiths ) and Tobias married Veronica Light (my ancestor) b.1/15 1903.
