    2. Jay, Audrey Snyder on the web put me on to a little trick of using plain flour. It brings out writing on dark stones very well as well as some light ones. Dust the stone very well. It is bio-degradeable. Good luck, Carol

Photographing at high noon works best for me, on visible stones, sometimes bringing out the more obscure characters. Silvered windshield screens sometimes is used to reflect the sunlight just sufficient to highlight some stones, but it doesn't always work on all stones. I'd stick to the shaving creme, taking along a spray squeeze bottle of water to help clean up the mess you mentioned. And of course there is the digital camera, allowing you to see exactly what you got. You may have to take and delete a dozen shots at different settings/angles before you get the one you like; it also allows you to notice the finger over the lens! 3. Jay, The material the tombstones were made out of is so delicate, you shouldn't use any chemical on them or anything that will scrape at them. Use of mirrors, flash lights to cast shadows, maybe holding up a clear plastic sheet that is yellow in color, may help, but anything that is a chemical is going to help deteriorate that stone even more for future generations to read. Best of luck. Myrna
