============================================================ Ancestry Daily News, 14 September 2000 Use a digital camera to photograph gravestones (especially the difficult-to-read variety). I've found that by playing around with the color balance, contrast, and special effects on the computer at home, I can magically "see" through the moss or lichen and make out the faded letters that defy deciphering "in the field." An added benefit is the visual record--I shoot the church, the graveyard, and views of the village and e-mail (or send hard copies) to various family researchers around the world, giving them the "feel" of a place they may never get to visit. Today's PRESS AND JOURNAL featured their "Picture Of The Week", the school kids (over 70 of them) and two teachers at an unnamed school probably in Oberlin, Bressler, or elsewhere in Swatara Township. Being an ol' geezer, I sort of forgot who sent me the picture for identification, so it has been published just today, and who knows, someone somewhere may call in and identify it for you. The eagle-eyed editor added captions, part of which says, "....It also looks like the little boy, third from the right in the front row has his shoes on the wrong feet. Maybe he had a rough morning....." I hadn't noticed that before; had you? Hi Susan, Your offer is very generous. I've searched in the Halifax area for a Mary HALL who died at the age of 74 in June/August 1849 [from the PA1850 Dauphin Co. Mortality Schedule] and believed to be the mother of Daniel HALL aged about 53 who had a stroke and drowned in the canal lock of Dauphin.PA about 1849. If you have the time to do this search, your time will be very appreciated. Lynn - thanks so much...this DEIMLER is actually a DEIBLER, son of Daniel Deibler and Anna Maria Fissel. Daniel was a son of Albrecht, also known as Albright (anglicized), who was a Captain killed during the Revolutionary War. Daniel and Maria's tombstones spell the name DEIWLER.

Gary, Bill and Additional Contributers, Thanks for the additional information on finding the best possible solution to safely reading worn stones. The infrared film in a conventional camera and the digital camera certainly are worth some experimention. However, I must confess my wife is somewhat disappointed, as she was really looking forward to getting a picture of me down on my knees with a flashlight and my head stuck in a bag with a tombstone. Take Care, Jay

I've had some luck with my mini digital video camera, by angling to the either side to see which gives the best combo of light and shadow in the letters, and also taking a matrix of close up shots to edit. Then when I computer edit, I have lots of different views to compare. Even so, if nothing is there, no amount of magic is going to make it appear. I have been wondering if the Infra red night shot capability might do something by showing heat emitting edges, but haven't had a chance to try it yet. Has anyone used this feature on tombstones? -- Bill Hawk
