Hi everyone! I am new to this list and wish to let you know that I am researching the surname BELL. My fifth ggrandfather is David Bell. He was a "native of Pennsylvania" according to an historical comment made in an Ohio encyclopedia. He died in Butler Co.Ohio in 1834 at the age of 60. I have found information from the Big Spring Church on a David Bell, but research says he ended up in Trumbull Co., Ohio instead of Butler Co., Ohio where my David ended up. My David BELL had a son Robert Jackson who had a son John Wesley. Any insights would be appreciated. Thanks, Judy
Oh, my god, I didn't even know that house was still standing. It seems like I might have talked or tried to talk to this woman before - could you possibly privately e-mail me her phone number? Below is another early family line from Dauphin Co. I have a large database of family lines (mostly from the northern half) that I would like to share. Warren the librarian at The Dauphin County Historical Society in Harrisburg has copied the records of Grace Methodist Episcopal Church. I am not sure just when they start but I found the baptism of my g grandfather in 1841 so it has to be prior to then. Some others he has copied are: Ridge Ave. Methodist Church Fifth Street Methodist Church Messiah Lutheran Church I know there were others. These are Xerox copies and as far as I know the originals are still at the respective churches. Ray Rhoads
Hello, I was married at Grace Methodist Church in Penbrook, which is just outside of the Harrisburg city line. There are marriage records at the court house, and if I remember correctly, they have records from the 1890s to the present. I hope this is helpful. I have "On The Main Line", by Edwin P. Alexander, the story of the Pennsylvania RR in the 19th century. The book doesn't answer Dora's question, but does have the following facts: In the chapter on the Philadelphia Division, it lists two sections to the division: The Philadelphia and Columbia RR, opened in 1834, and The Harrisburg, Portsmouth, Mt. Joy and Lancaster (a private co. leased for 20 years in 1848 and again for 999 years in 1861. Schedules for 1852, 1855, 1875 and 1909 are given. In 1852 the line stopped at Elizabethtown, in 1855 at Conewago, Highspire Sta. is listed in the 1875 schedule at 99.0 miles from the Phila. beginning at 32nd and Market Sts. The 1875 schedule included stops at Baldwin, 102 mi. and Lochiel, 104 mi. before Harrisburg, at 105 mi. In 1909, the schedule goes Highspire, Steelton, Harrisburg. Also in 1909, the road started at Broad St. Sta. in Phila. and the mileage to Harrisburg is changed to 103.9. There are many fine pictures in this book, but none of Highspire. Dillersville Junction where the two roads came together is shown in 1888, and there is an 1880's shot of the Steelton switch tower. Perhaps some of this will jog some of the old railroaders' memories. BIll Hawk

This may take a while, 'cause they all don't come in every day. The one guy I know doing this 'stuff' makes it about once a week. And he can't even spell 'computer', yet alone use one! Back around the mid-1800s, the Canals were at their highest, beginning to wind down as the railroads came into popularity. By around 1865 things changed quickly; the canals were out, and the railroads were in. Any railroad buff (which I ain't one) should be able to field this simple question. We'll see. On a 1870's map of Highspire, the railroad tracks ran parallel to the river and not far from it, the railroad station was in the southeastern part of town on this track, and my ancestor, Jacob Wise/ Weiss's land is shown straddling the tracks a block west of the railway station. It occupied five lots. Yours, Dora --- "Charles E. How do you secure the CD's? Does your CDfrom Egle that mentions McCords mention Joseph McCord? He died in 1882 and was married to Maria Kendig.

The PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD's main line went through Highspire. Bethlehem Steel operated their own railroad, known as the S & H Railroad (presumably for Steelton-Highspire). The P and R (Philadelphia and Reading RailRoad) had terminals in Middletown, Highspire, Steelton AND Harrisburg. Employees in all locations, so if someone worked for the railroad in those localities, DO NOT overlook the smaller, less known railroads. Perhaps you could contact some railroad buff for more details if you need them to track down ancestors. I knew a guy who worked in the Steelton office for the P&R. My mother worked in the Middletown P&R office building. My wife's Uncle Jake was killed in Royalton by a falling rail at age 37. What railroad company? We don't know, and haven't found that documentation. The newspaper obit didn't say. Rich and all - I heartily recommend FTM CD #19, Egle's Notes and Queries. It is heavily Dauphin Co which the world (my part of it anyway) needs because the ones based on Humphrey's PA Births do not include Dauphin Co. Of course what I find is if you find your people on a CD, it is great, if you don't, it's a ripoff. I know no solution to that but I think you can search them at the FTM site before deciding whether to buy. Rich etal, see the following web site before buying any cds. Volunteers will do look-ups for you, and if you find one you "gotta" have you can buy it. http://seidata.com/~genealogy/cdlist.html -- Bill
Hi Listmembers Wondering if anyone has experience with the various Pennsylvania CD-ROM's that are offered that may have proven to be especially valuable for research in Dauphin Co. I have one, which is "Egle's Notes & Queries of Pennsylvania, 1700-1800's". This one CD offered by FamilyTreeMaker has given me >>>tons<<< of info on my lines which include JOHNSTON, JOHNSON, CRAIN, SAWYER and MCCORD among others. They offer several others including Pennsylvania Wills, 1682-1834; Genealogical Records: Pennsylvania Colonial Records 1600-1800; Pennsylvania Vita Records 1700s-1800s; Pennsylvania Wills, 1682-1834; Selected Areas of Pennsylvania, 1600s-1800s Church Records and Southeastern Pennsylvania, 1680-1800 Birth Index. Most they list at 29.99 ea. This isn't meant as a plug for any firm, but an inquiry to other Dauphin Co. researchers to learn if investing in any of these other titles or others CD's offered by other companies have shown promising results. Thanks in advance for any insight. Rich
Does anyone know which railroad company owned the line that went through Highspire, and its railway station? Yours, Dora Smith __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Photos - 35mm Quality Prints, Now Get 15 Free! http://photos.yahoo.com/
