Then I dashed off the web page / home site with the bare necessities, intend to add much of the info Bev provided on the SWARTZ family history. More later. 1. [PADAUPHI] new to list - JOHNSON line
    2. Dean Johnson
    3. Hi The following is the info I have on my Johnson line, which begins in Dauphin County, PA. --------- The only information I have comes from "Portrait and Biographical Album of Stephenson County, Illinois", Chicago: Chapman Brothers. 1888 (p.708). The article is about my 2nd great-grandfather James JOHNSON, Jr. but says this about my 4th great-grandfather "Samuel JOHNSON, who was a native of the northern part of Ireland, of Scotch ancestry. He came to this country before the Revolutionary War, in which he served as a private, and located in what is now known as Dauphin County, Pa., where he was an early settler, and lived and died there after following the occupation of a farmer." I don't have his spouses name. Of my 3rd great-grandfather: "The father of our subject, James JOHNSON, Sr., was the youngest of five sons and three daughters and was reared in Dauphin County(,Pa), where he was born. He grew up a farmer and was married to Miss Mary JOHNSON, of the same county, and came of the same ancestry as her husband. The parents later in life went to what is now Clinton County, Pa., and there made their home until their death, the father being eighty-four, and the mother eighty years old at the time of their decease. They were early settlers of Clinton County." Of James JOHNSON, Jr. "is the fifth of ten children, four sons and six daughters. He was born in the southern part of Pennsylvania, Oct. 14, 1814, and grew up at home, his father having moved to several different counties during his childhood. Our subject received his education principally in Franklin County, Pa. He lived at home until he was fourteen or fifteen years old, when he set out to make his own way in life. He worked for a few years in a woolen factory, and was married to Miss Elizabeth SMITH in Clinton County." "After his marriage, Mr. JOHNSON lived in Clinton County, Pa., on a farm until he came West to Illinois, in the spring of 1850. He then purchased 120 acres of partly improved land, where he now lives on section 7, of Rock Run Township, to which he has since made an addition, owning now 220 acres." It is mentioned that Elizabeth "is the mother of seven children, one deceased: Mary A. is the wife of Paul LAIR, and lives on a farm in Kansas; Sarah C. is the wife of Henry LAIR, who lives on a farm adjoining; Isabella, wife of Samuel BARR, farmer, lives near Red Oak, Iowa; Nettie, wife of Luke BECK, resides in Freeport, Ill.; John R., who married Mary MITCHELL, lives in this township on a farm; Samuel W. resides at home." John Roan JOHNSON who married Mary Jane MITCHELL was my great-grandfather and I have fairly complete information on him. As you can see I don't have specific dates on Samuel JOHNSON and his son James JOHNSON. Thanks, Dean

    1. [PADAUPHI] Sadie Shoop & Charles Keehn
    2. Jocelyn Keene
    3. I'd like to thank all the people who responded to my query about Sadie Shoop, Charles Keehn, and the Elizabethville Cemetery. One question that hasn't yet been answered is how I can locate a marriage record for them assuming they were married in Dauphin County (which is not a sure thing). I think they were married in about 1908. To whom should I write and how much money should I send? Thanks, Jocelyn __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? >From homework help to love advice, Yahoo! Experts has your answer. http://experts.yahoo.com/

    1. [PADAUPHI] SWARTZ Cemetery - PA - Dauphin Co.
    2. Charles E. Fies, Retired
    3. We revisited the SWARTZ / NISSLEY Cemetery in PA - Dauphin Co - Lower Swatara Township to check on it's sad deteriorating condition. The photos on my Swartz page don't tell the full story. Care to look? SWARTZ CEMETERY <http://home.att.net/~charliefies/Swartz.html> Some Swartz relatives did some restoration 10-15 years ago, but since then something happened. Stones were moved, left lying on top of the wide wall cap surrounding the cemetery. Christian Swartz, arriving here aboard the PHOENIX about 1754, is buried here, along with several generations. Approximately 16 tombstone recordings are listed on the Swartz page, and you may be interested in giving it a look-see. The photos are a bit large, so wait a minute while they load. You can read the interments table while waiting, so it isn't all lost. The history accompanying this cemetery is fascinating, and I'll include it on the page when time permits. Also listed are 20 interments in the Nissley Mansion Cemetery, wherever that is. The Swartz homestead was surrounded by Nisleys, and inter-married, giving reason to believe there is a connection between the two cemeteries. 3. Hi, I am very familiar with the situation searching for ancestors in Berks County, but not in Dauphin County. Please bear with my ignorance here. My great-uncle, Charles Keehn, retired to Elizabethville, died in 1965 and is buried in the Elizabethville cemetery. His wife was Sadie Shoop, who I have been told, originally came from Lykens. They lived in Reading for many years before moving to Elizabethville. I have never found their marriage certificate in Berks County, so perhaps they were married in Dauphin County. Also, I don't know when Sadie died. I thought if I could find out what cemeteries are located in Elizabethville then perhaps I could locate some cemetery records and I find out when she died. Is anyone familiar with this area? How does one look for marriage records in Dauphin County? In Berks they are all indexed and on the web. I doubt that I will be so lucky as to find the same situation in Dauphin. Thanks for your help, Jocelyn in California __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! 3. I've borrowed several books thru library loan. I went to the local library with the title and they were able to tell me if they access to a library with that book. Then I filled out a one page form for my local. They requested the book from the library and called me when it was ready. The cost was minimal. The only regret I had is that I could keep the book for only three weeks so I had to do a lot of reading very fast. If you didn't know which Lodge he was a member of but tried a hit-or-miss method, perhaps you should communicate with the Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of Ohio. His birth and death dates are important to pin point the specific individual. The Grand Secretary may or may not help you with this information. If you are not a member of a Masonic Lodge, perhaps you could get a member to make the inquiries for you. Not sure if this will help, but it certainly would not harm anything. If you'd care to see a little about the type information available, and how you have to go about getting it, take a look at my page of local Masonic History at: <http://home.att.net/~chasfies/MasnCarp.html> Good luck, and keep on digging. -- CHARLES EARL FIES -- Fies Family Fotos <http://home.att.net/~chasfies/> BABB - HARTMAN <http://home.att.net/~chasfies/Babbs.html> DAUPHIN CO.
