Hello list, I came across some papers my father had stashed away. Not sure why we have them as they're not of any relation, but thought someone on the list might like to have them. It is several pages from a journal kept by the Bell family, and two pages have a listing of births. They are: John Bell, son of Peter and Sarah Bell was born November the 2, AD the year of our Lord 1817. Wrote by John Bell. Mary An Bell daughter of Peter and Sarah Bell was born February 3, AD the year of our Lord 1819. Margaret ann Bell, daughter of Peter and Sarah Bell was born November 17, AD the year of our Lord 1820. Felix Bell, son of Peter and Sarah Bell was born December 22 AD the uear of our Lord 1822. Esther (I think) Bell, daughter of Peter and Sarah Bell was born March 30 AD the year of our Lord 1825. David Bell, son of Peter and Sarah Bell was born March 30 AD the year of our Lord 1827. L?_ _ ha Bell, daughter of Peter and Sarah Bell was born October 17 AD the year of our Lord 1829. Sarah ann Bell daughter of Peter and Sarah Bell was born January the 30, 1833. Rachel C. Bell, daughter of Peter and Sarah Bell, was born February the 23, 1834. George Washington Bell, son of Peter and Sarah Bell was born June 29, 1837. Isaiah Bell, son of Peter and Sarah Bell was born February the 3, 1840. Lovina J. Bell, Daughter of Peter Bell and Sarah Bell was borne March the 12, 1844. My mother says these papers were given to my father by a George HERMAN. There is a note on the outside of the envelope that says: George HERMAN, born Sept 8, 1838, died May 23, 1900. Wife Sarah, born July 23, 1848, died July 15, 1920. I assume this is some ancestor of the more recent George Herman. I'm posting this to list, but if a direct line ancestor of Peter and Sarah would like to have these papers, I will gladly send them. Please email me...first come, first served! Laura
We have Mater families in this area before 1800. We had thought they were German speaking but now suspect that they may have come from Mater, a village in Belgium. They may have come very early to the colonies as De Mater or De La Mater. They may have spoken Dutch or French. This is a very general question but we are just beginning to understand this early Mater family. Any comments appreciated. We do have them from Cumberland County into Ohio down to the present day - although in 1860 our family changed their name from Mater to Mateer - and I can prove that. Regards Hal
Hello All: I notice that there is a Jacob Leberinghause in the 1810 census of Dauphin County - does anyone have any connection to this name or a variation of it as I believe that my ancestors were from this family. Hoping to hear from someone - thank you - Ahlive
I am searching for a PARKS family who came to Hanover twsp. in mid 1700's, from Ireland. Also the names RUSSELL, ROBESON, MC MEEN, CRAINE AND CRAWFORD. The time period was mid 1700-mid1800. Any help would be great.
FYI, not all of the transcriptions are done yet. The Original Index shows all that are in the book. <If anyone has access to any of these census records, or anything else that lists an ABBEY family around 1850-1870 in DAUPHIN COUNTY, I would very much apppreciate your help!> Connie, I found the following info on GenealogyLibrary.com (pay site) on the FamilyTreeMaker site. The below excerpt is from the "ABBE/ABBEY Family Genealogy" which is a searchable book in their library. There was also a chapter of "Unconnected Lines" that would have to be searched page by page. Also, I found the MT 1870 census listing as below. After checking ABBEY, and number of variants, I had no luck at all on the census', but I only have access to the indexes. Without a name for Valentine's father the index's aren't much help. I checked for a "Benjamin" with no luck. Are you certain this family is German? Hello, Dauphin County listers - I used to live in Westmoreland County, Pa. until moving to Idaho three years ago. I volunteered to try to find out what I could for an elderly lady I met that volunteers at the local historical society about her grandfather, who was a miner here. Lo and behold, my search has led me back to Pa.! His name was VALENTINE ABBEY, and he was supposed to have been born in or near Harrisburg around 1854 to German parents. The 1850 index has a BEAL ABBEY listed in Middle Paxton Twp. on p. 271. I'm thinking my best shot to find him would be in the 1860 census, but I have no index. The family may be in the 1870 census - my index lists a WERT ABBEY in Upper Paxton Twp. on p 658. VALENTINE ABBEY moved West as a young man, so I don't think he would be there in 1880, but it's possible. I know he moved to Montana and had married a girl born in Idaho in 1894. If anyone has access to any of these census records, or anything else that lists an ABBEY family around 1850-1870 in DAUPHIN COUNTY, I would very much apppreciate your help! Connie in Idaho
Ray, If you mean the records for War of 1812 soldiers in general, the pension and military records can be had from the National Archives in Washington. Also there is a partial list of Upper Dauphin Co. WO 1812 soldiers in the Gratz history book. Thanks for this list. Jack and Joyce Barnhart: I received your package and wow! What a bundle; it'll take me a while to tie it all into the Swartz - Nissley cemetery stories on their web page. And the $1.43 postage you laid out is a lot more than the e-mail costs, UNLESS it consists of so many pages. BRINSER, A. C.; Cradle Factory here in Londonderry - where can I find more information on it? I have lots of BRINSERs in my various cemeteries here in Dauphin County, and I don't know where it was located; haven't seen any reference to it before. Its too bad Bill Risser passed away before he had chance to share all his BRINSER information with me. We were going to get together on a Monday; he died Saturday! I went up Longview Drive, near Strites Road looking for any resemblance of the Nissley Mansion or other homesteads, but from the road didn't recognize anything. I'll need more background on them, so back to your material and my CDs. I found a bunch of Welcomers there, some of whom I've read about, some of whom are new to me. Does this cemetary have a phone number of someone who might have more records than birth and death dates? I know I'm related to some (probably all) of these people and I'd like to fit them into my family tree. Thanks again for all your hours. > > Sincerely, > > Paul Welcomer::}~ I'm glad you enjoyed the visit through the Dauphin County cemeteries from the comfort of your computer chair. Wish I could have saved the hours and hours of walking the numerous rows in cemeteries looking for someone who wasn't there! All my roots are in BERKS COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA. Since I couldn't find any more there, I began looking for other people right across the street in the Geyer's Hillsdale cemetery, and sorta got taken with the project. You see what I accomplished. I've never inquired about other records like marriages, births, and baptisms in Geyer's Church, just the burials. By being more specific about a certain individual or line of ancestors, I could inquire about them just down the road on my side of the street. I could tell you a little bit about Charlie Welcomer and his dad Charlie, but not very much. Charlie's mother/wife just passed away recently, I believe, but don't recall the details. Geyer's is a relatively small church, yet their burials come from all over the countryside, many not being it's members and therefore no local records. Let me know who in particular you are looking for (not the whole frying shop!) and I'd be more than willing to check them out for you. After all, I ought to do more than just wave to the Pastor as I go by daily!
