William AYRES who was the husband of Mary Elizabeth Bucher, and who was born December 14, 1788 in Middle Paxtang Township, dying on May 26, 1856, in Harrisburg, PA, was involved as a trial lawyer on one occasion that gained him a measure of fame. Unfortunately, the exact name of the person involved, etc., is in my data at home. But the real question I have to ask may not require that. Is there even the remotest of possibilities of obtaining a copy of that trial transcript, and if so, where and how? Thanks for any insights, information, etc., etc. Vince Summers
FYI to the list, The State library just installed several new microfilm printers. They are much nicer to use than the old ones.
I would like to make contact with any person working on the Miess/Mease line - in particular the line of Johann Heinrich and Elisabeth nee Conrad Mease. Thanks. Bev Wyld
Dec. 4,2000 Hi, Would someone be kind enough to look up an obit, birth or marriage of a William Cathcart. In the 1790 cenus of Dauphin Co. he is listed with 3 males over 16 years old, 1 under 16, and 2 females. He had 5 sons, Hugh, William, James, John, Thomas and 3 Daughters Ellen, Jane, Hanna. He married Ellen McMaster. I have no dates for deaths, births, or marriages for him. Any help would be appreciated. I live at the other end of the state (Erie area) so it would be difficult for me to drive over there. Thanks so much Charles L. Davis crrash@toolcity.net
Hello, I'm trying to identify the location of my ancestor's Naturalization Records. More specifically the Declaration of Intention. I am told that these papers "may" identify the date of arrival, port of arrival, ship name and more. I was at the state library Saturday and found "Robert Broome" in the 1850 Census of Dauphin County. He lived in Wiconisco Township through the 1870 Census. He and all his children were born in England, the youngest was 11 years old. I can assume that he came to the USA sometime between 1839 and 1850. While at the library I searched a series of books on passenger arrivals (they may have been Filby's). This series of books I'm speaking of has three main volumes and yearly supplements since, I believe, 1983. As I said I searched and didn't come across his name. The Naturalization Records are generally held in the county of residence, but not necessarily. Before taking a day off work to make a trip to the courthouse, would somebody please let me know if there is an online index of Naturalization Records on file there? I would like to confirm that his records are there before my trip. Thanks...........
When you are looking up some of the earlier obits, don't overlook all sections of the newspaper. Sometimes you will find them among the social events section like weddings, etc. The last time we were looking up obits at State Library, we even found some death notices in the classified sections! It may be best to use the microfilm readers that do not make copies first, as you have a larger view of the entire page. If you find it, notate the page number, date of the paper, then put it on the machine that makes the copies. That is if they are working!
Thanks Karl! Oh, Karl, your not related to a Mr Fox that used to teach welding at William Penn High School are you? I can't rememeber his first name........... I believe it would be in the Harrisburg paper, as the only major town in Middle Paxton Twp. is Dauphin. I'm not sure if Dauphin had a paper in those days. Karl Fox
Sharon, I hope someone out there has luck in finding your ggg-grandmother's obituary. I could not find my great grandmothers obituary in the local Harrisburg, PA newspaper, who died on May 8, 1915. Back in those days they did not list the deaths together in one section of the paper like they do today. The microfilm and the print was very difficult to read. Some day I will go back to the state library and try again. If someone lived in Harrisburg, PA, but died in Middle Paxton Township, Dauphin County what newspaper(s) would the obituary be printed in? Hoernerstown is in South Hanover Twp. in Dauphin County. Only a few miles north of Hummelstown and maybe 5 miles west of Union Deposit.. It is a very small town. Gail
