    2. Ray Rhoads
    3. Jerry I am not aware of any county census however there are tax records for most years and for most towns in Dauphin County. These record list the heads of households divided into three catagories Freeholders, Tennants and Single Men. The LDS has the records on microfilm from 1785 to 1850. The State Archives has them till around 1895. If searching in Harrisburg city directories could be used. As far as vital records are concerned you will need to search church records. For a brief period between 1852 and 1855 some records were kept by the counties. However even these are incomplete. Ray Rhoads

    3. Hi, Were there Dauphin County census? I know there were PA State census, but I didn't know about a county census. What years were they? Where could I access them? Also, there seems to be a gap in birth & marriage records for PA between abt 1840-1880. Any ideas about researching this time period for "Vitals"? Jerry <Rhodes/Rhoads/Roth>

    3. Hi. I am currently transcribing data on these lines for Bob Maley. It will not be too long, no doubt, before the data from the publication will be put online. Perhaps I will be done the transcribing in about 2 weeks. Then, Bob is very busy, so it may take a while longer. 1. [PADAUPHI] Dauphin Co Naturalization Records
    2. Lorie Kline
    3. Naturalization records are to be kept at the county level per the Scranton which is where the US Middle District Court is for PA. When the Dauphin Co Prothonotary's office is questioned, this is where they send you. WRONG. The records are in the Dauphin Co Prothonotary's Office but maybe or maybe not only after 1906. The manager there is reluctant to give out or look for public records. This is probably why no one is answering your question. Hopefully this helps. Sorry!

    3. William AYRES, who is one of the sketch subjects in Bob Maley's Transcription Project, was, among other things, a Lawyer. Here is a trial, and a surname, that I would like to know more about. Also, what is the Upper End? Upper Paxtang? ***** He had a very large acquaintance in the "Upper End," was able to speak German, and otherwise possessed many qualifications then valued and essential to practice with profit. The celebrated McElhenny murder case, in which he saved his client from the gallows, gave him a marked prominence. ***** William was born 1788, and died 1856. He begain practicing law in 1826. He died in Harrisburg. He was married to Mary Elizabeth BUCHER, and was born to parents: John AYRES and Jane LYTLE. Thanks for any feedback, Vince Summers

Egle, State Librarian back around 1890-1900. Their Social Security Index is also nice to have, if you are interested in locating RECENT deaths of family members or friends. One problem knawing at me is why the name BRINSER, as in Brinser's Corn Meal or Brinser's Cradle factory, or the numerous teachers and ministers in the Brinser clan, does NOT appear anywhere in these dozen or so volumes by Egle. Anyone know? FTM's catalog states these Census CDs are Microfilm Images, so most likely are identical to the various microfilms they were copied from. A difficult to read microfilm is better than no record at all (although sometimes I wonder why I'm trying so hard to read what I can't understand!). 2. I have purchased census CD's from both places. They are copies of the original records, so look just like the ones you see at the State Library, etc. The FTM bundles are indexed with the package. The Heritage Quest CD's do not come with an index - you would have to purchase this separately. I have considered the cost worth the investment. Judy Strickler pblls@aol.com

    1. [PADAUPHI] Location of Naturalization Records?
    2. I didn't get a reply to the orginal message below. So, would someone please reply and let me know if naturalization records for the year (abt.)1850 are maintained at the courthouse or sent elsewhere? Thanks..... Subj: Naturalization Records for Dauphin County Date: 12/04/2000 4:35:31 AM Eastern Standard Time From: BMiller247 To: PADAUPHI-L@rootsweb.com Hello, I'm trying to identify the location of my ancestor's Naturalization Records. More specifically the Declaration of Intention. I am told that these papers "may" identify the date of arrival, port of arrival, ship name and more. I was at the state library Saturday and found "Robert Broome" in the 1850 Census of Dauphin County. He lived in Wiconisco Township through the 1870 Census. He and all his children were born in England, the youngest was 11 years old. I can assume that he came to the USA sometime between 1839 and 1850. While at the library I searched a series of books on passenger arrivals (they may have been Filby's). This series of books I'm speaking of has three main volumes and yearly supplements since, I believe, 1983. As I said I searched and didn't come across his name. The Naturalization Records are generally held in the county of residence, but not necessarily. Before taking a day off work to make a trip to the courthouse, would somebody please let me know if there is an online index of Naturalization Records on file there? I would like to confirm that his records are there before my trip. Thanks...........
