    1. [PADAUPHI] Mater -German or French?
    2. Arthur H Laube
    3. We have Jacob Mater baptizing his son, John, July 4, 1762 in the Hill Lutheran Church, Derry Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. John Mater and wife were witnesses. Our question - where did these Maters come from? Does anyone in the Mcteer clan claim them? I think they may be my ancestors but I am not proud. I will accept another Scot connection. Or German. Or Dutch. I have already found so may different European sources that if I hyphenated them my lineage would run on for several lines. The following is one of the few references to a Mater in Europe before 1800. Taken from a descendant on Ancestor.com JOHANN GEORG MATER was born Abt. 1688 in Diefenbach, Maulbronn, Wuertt., Germany. His daughter MARIA ELISABETHA MATER, b. Abt. 1716, of Diefenbach, Maulbronn, Wuertt., Germany; m. MICHAEL FAZLER, July 16, 1743, Diefenbach, Maulbronn, Wuertt., Germany; b. Abt. 1714, of Diefenbach, Maulbronn, Wuertt., Germany; d. Bef. May 19, 1767. evangelisch. There are many Mater families living in the Netherlands after 1800 - I have not found any reference to Mater before 1800, but they must be there. I wonder where to look. There is a Mater village in Belgium. Said to have been named after the Mother Superior of a nearby convent which guarded the village in the early days - there is also a Mater stream nearby. Did those living in this hamlet move elsewhere and say they were from Mater - de la Mater. There are many del la Mater families in the colonies. One reference *Genealogy of descendants of Claude Le Maitre (Delamater) who came from France via Holland and settled at New Netherland, now New York, in 1652 by La Fayette De La Mater. Claude Le Maitre, a Protestant, immigrated from France (via England and then Holland) to Flatbush, Long Island, New York in 1652. Descendants (chiefly spelling the surname De La Mater, Delamater, or Le Maitre) and relatives lived in New York, New England, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Florida and elsewhere. Some descendants immigrated to Quebec and elsewhere in Canada. Includes some family history and genealogy in France. New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania is included.* Anyone interested? 3. Dauphin Co did not record marriages until 1885. Your only hope is to find a church record of the marriage or in a very few instances the minister may have put a notice in a newspaper . The Dauphin Co Historical society has photocopied the records of a number of Harrisburg area churches which cover this time period. 1. [PADAUPHI] A genealogist's night before christmas
    2. BGIBSON
    3. Merry Christmas to all I picked this up from the freepages help site at rootsweb. Thought you all would enjoy it A Genealogist's Christmas Eve "Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even my spouse. The dining room table with clutter was spread With pedigree charts and with letter which said ... "Too bad about the data for which you wrote Sank in a storm on an ill-fated boat." Stacks of old copies of wills and the such Were proof that my work had become to much. Our children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugarplums danced in their heads. And I at my table was ready to drop, From work on my album with photos to crop. Christmas was here, and of such was my lot, That presents and goodies and toys I'd forgot. Had I not been so busy with grandparents wills, I'd not have forgotten to shop for such thrills. While others had bought gifts that would bring Christmas cheer, I'd spent time researching those birth dates and years. While I was musing about my sad plight, A strange noise on the lawn gave me such a great fright. Away to the window I flew with a flash, Tore open the drapes and I yanked up the sash. When what to my wondering eyes should appear, but an over stuffed sleigh and eight small reindeer. Up to the house top the reindeer they flew, With a sleigh full of toys, and ole Santa Claus, too. And then with a twinkle, I heard on the roof, The prancing and pawing of thirty-two hoofs. The TV antenna was no match for their horns, And look at our roof with hoof-prints adorned. As I drew in my head, and bumped it on the sash, Down the cold chimney fell Santa -- KER-RASH ! "Dear" Santa had come from the roof in a wreck, And tracked soot on the carpet, [ I could wring his short neck ! ] Spotting my face, good old Santa could see, I had no Christmas spirt you'd have to agree. He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings, [ I felt like a jerk ! ] Here was Santa, who'd brought us such gladness and joy, When I'd been to busy for even one toy. He spied my research on the table all spread. "A Genealogist!" He cried [ My face was all red ! ] To night I have met many like you, Santa grinned As he pulled from his sack a large book he had penned. I gazed with amazement - the cover it read, "Genealogy Lines for Which You Have Plead" "I know what it's like as a genealogy bug, He said as he gave me a great Santa hug. While the elves make a sleighful of toys I now carry, I do some research in the North Pole Library !. A special treat I am thus able to bring, To genealogy folks who can't find a thing. Now off you go to your bed for a rest, I'll clean up the house from this genealogy mess. As I climbed up the stairs full of gladness and glee, I looked back at Santa who'd brought much to me. While settling in bed, I heard Santa's clear whistle, To his team, which then rose like the down of a thistle. And I heard him exclaim as he flew out of sight, "Family History is Fun ! Merry Christmas ! Goodnight !"

Another record states that they are buried in the Hershey Mennonite Cemetery in Dauphin County. (1) Is this one cemetery and what is it called today? (2) Does anyone have a phone number for this cemetery? I'd like to phone the cemetery. (3) Where should I write to obtain an obituary of someone who died in 1909, 1914, and 1942? 1. [PADAUPHI] Shalley (vs sp), Adam b abt 1770
    2. Arthur H Laube
    3. Dan Wright has an obituary reporting that Henry Shalley was born May 12, 1831 in Carlisle, Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania. We have a Franklin County deed dated 1871 wherein Simon Shawley's six children, heirs, are named. A Henry is listed among them. Henry is not included in the 1850, Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania household of Simon ( census page 364. But there is a Henry Shalley listed on page 328. If someone would look this up we could compare his age to the birth year of 1831. Various researchers have given us the ancestors of this Shalley line. And we are grateful for their help. Others have given us the line of Cumberland County Egolff which supplied Sarah Jane Egolff as Simon's spouse. But a very important link has not been proven. It seems very likely that Simon is descendant from Adam(b abt. 1770)/Christian Shalley(1727-1800)/Johann Ludwig Shalley(1698-1778). We have previously posted our reasoning, but we have no paper proof that Simon is the son of Adam. There are two possible early records of this Adam. One is the Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, 1800 census Page #: 245, which lists Shally, Adam as head of household with Age ranges in household : 10010-1001000. The second possibility is the Cumberland County, Middleton Township, Pennsylvania, 1810 census, p.18. He has two young males in his household. Also, Christian Shalley's sister. Catherine Smith, named Adam, her nephew in her 1810 will. Catherine was living in Middleton Township at the time of her death. Any comments would be most welcome. Regards and Merry Christmas to the list. Hal

    2. Saw you reply to Bob Miller and thought you have access to more records than I have. I'm hoping you might be able to help me locate a cemetery in Wiconisco area that I have been looking for over 1 1/2 yrs. Shomper/Sheafer Cemetery - Located between the village of Dayton and Wiconisco. Could also be called the Sheafer Presbyterian Cemetery. It is no longer used and probably completly overgrown. There are probably only 6 or 7 stones left. The rest, according to information I was given, have disappeared or have been destroyed. If you or anyone on the list have information as to the location I would greatly appreciate it. I have a collection of 225 cemetery locations so far in Dauphing County and would like to add this one. Thanks, Karl

    2. Hello, If anyone has access to info on cemeteries for the Wiconisco area, I am looking for burial spot for Isaac and Rachael Jones, my g-g-grandparents who came over from Wales abt 1860, first to Schuylkill County and later to Wiconisco area. I cannot locate them on the PA census, so I assume they came over after the 1860 was taken and died before the 1870 was taken. I have checked some of the cemetery books for the Williamstown and surrounding area, but have found nothing. Thanks Karen C.
