This started when someone asked me about the Pvt. Books of Civil War time, that I had reported in my Sunset Cemetery listings. ----- Original Message ----- From: Patricia Proper <p_proper@hotmail.com> To: <PADAUPHI-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 13, 2001 1:33 PM Subject: [PADAUPHI] Re: Digest mention of Egle's Notes > Charles: Evidently I do need this CD you recommended: Egle's Notes. > > > Where do I make this contact? <www.FamilyTreeMaker.com/blowouts> > I am researching the Balsbaugh, Books and Buck surnames of Dauphin Co. > Sincerely, Patricia Books Proper > ********************************************************** > > _________________________________________________________________ > Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com > > > ==== PADAUPHI Mailing List ==== > Who, Where, When. > A GOOD subject says:...... 3. FTM is FamilyTreeMaker software for genealogy researchers. I just ordered the Egle's Notes and Queries CD yesterday at http://www.genealogy.com It's under their "January Specials." Charles convinced me to purchase it. It has really come down in price, so I'm going for it. It sold on Ebay for over $20!!! 2. The Lykens Standard (not sure how far back that goes) or Lykens Register should have covered obits from Wiconisco. I have found wonderful old obits in those papers for surrounding towns. The PA State Library has both, but only a few years for the Lykens Register. The number for their newspaper room is 717-787-3883.

    1. [PADAUPHI] Earl Keim of Highspire
    2. Is anybody familiar with an Earl Keim family that lived on 2nd. St. in Highspire during the 1930-1940's, or know of any of their ancestors now living? Maybe somebody out there is working on this family line.

    2. My husband has been looking for his family line from Dauphin County for over 2 years now and has hit a big road block. Seems that his grandfather moved away from that area and never talked about his family when he moved. The only person that he ever mentioned was his mother (my husband's great grandmother) Annie Weaver (Weber). He does know his great grandfather's name though. It's James Williams. Doing some research my husband has come across a James H. Williams that might be the one. How can he go about getting an obit of this person? James H. died in April 1896 in Wiconisco. Would it have been listed in a newspaper in that area? Any advice or help would greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone. Leslie

Wm. Henry Egle was the State's Librarian in the late 1800s, and collected writings from lots of people, publishing those letters and queries in a weekly newspaper column. He walked all over the state, reading tombstone engravings in the old (even at that time) cemeteries and carefully recording that data for publishing in his column. He walked through old, falling-down homes and buildings, detailing his observations, again for publication. FTW, in cooperation with the publishing company, compiled his 13 volumes onto a single CD and it is now available for just $9.95 plus shipping. I recommend it to EVERYONE doing any kind of research in Pennsylvania, even though most of the material centers around central Pennsylvania I'm inserting the number of appearances on the CD of the surnames you mention: I am researching my husband's KAYLOR (none), HOFFER (20, but no Nancy Anna), SHELLY (200 or so), BELL (about 440), CASSEL (130), > BALSBAUGH (40), BAUM (80)and GIBBLE (none)surnames. I've been using it since the early '80s, and am quite comfortable with it, preferring it over some other old ones such as Mozilla, Eudora, or what have you. Yes, even better, in my opinion, than Microsoft's Internet Explorer, which was probably copied from successful browsers (in my opinion). HOWEVER, Netscape was bought out by AOL, I believe, and a new Version, 6, became available. Several of us got it immediately, and almost as immediately, deleted it in favor of older versions of Netscape. It appears, almost, that a degraded browser was deliberately substituted for Netscape, perhaps to 'encourage' the use of other programs. This is an opinion I formed by attempting to use Netscape6 for several weeks, but gave up and went back to Netscape4.7 The apologies are because Netscape6 changes the way it "reads" my home pages, and they look pretty sloppy, while they still look pretty good to me on Netscape4.7 Incidentally, you may be interested in my Shellys Island Shelleys: <http://home.att.net/~chasfies/Shelleys.html> -- Regards, with regrets to Netscape6 users (what a mess!) If you have an older computer, say with a 486, or an 80 to 100mHz processor, rev 8 may be awfully slow to run. Consider upgrading your computer, or see if you can find a copy of rev 5 or 6, which will produce files you can later move up to rev 8. I have a 100 mHz processor, and have rev7 but have not installed it because it requires a faster processor. Still going fine with rev 5 FTM, although I don't have all the bells and whistles. Bill

    3. I would start with the newest version which I think is 8.0. I am not a computer person and found it very easy to learn. You just start typing in your names and away you go. Be sure to add you sources as you go. I thought it would be easier to go back and do it all at once. It isn't and now I am confused. But this is not FTM's fault. I have used two other programs and keep coming back to it. (It was a "deal" for under $10 with a rebate!) It has been okay, BUT I mistakenly left a generation out..and now cannot insert it without retyping the whole thing (back to 1400!!!) Will FTM allow me to easily insert a generation? I have downloaded the Archive Viewer, so I should be able to read the FTM CD's. Thanks for all your help. > > "Carol M.
